The Man of Steel Rewrite Part 1: Less is More

Man of Steel was a lot of things but I wouldn't say very many people believe it was the Iron Man-esque Cinematic Universe starting success that DC hoped it would be.
And I believe there are bunch of different reasons why it didn't quite work. Story structure. Character development. Strange choices. But one thing is certain. It would take more than one small change to address them all.
So in this series, I am going to rewrite Man of Steel. I'm cutting scenes, reordering events, and occasionally adding moments that will help to define Clark's origin story and create a Superman movie that both fans and non fans of the character can enjoy.

I don't think it warranted the mixed response it got. Was a very solid first entry for the DCEU and I liked Henry Cavill's performance. Also think it delivered us the best villain we've seen so far in the DCEU, although that's not a glowing endorsement given how bad some of the other villains were.

If you do this, Earth will be destroyed, and every living being will die. *Zod*: ... Earth had its chance.

@@BruvahSulaiman What does Clark know about travelling through space? Or about finding a planet suitable for terraforming so the Kryptonians can live on it? Zod states that they travelled to all the old outposts, all the places in the Galaxy that the Kryptonians had tried to colonize and found nothing but death as the colonies were unable to sustain themselves when Krypton contracted and closed itself off. If Zod was unable to find a planet to work with during all of that, how could Clark possibly be of any help, having no useful knowledge to contribute to the search? And having found a planet they can use, and with the means to make the changes they need to, what motivation does Zod have to leave? Clark helping them find another planet isn't brought up because the movie doesn't make it an option. It doesn't do so because it isn't trying to paint Zod as malicious or specifically evil, and if he had another reasonable choice he would most likely take it. So the movie doesn't give him that choice, the same way it doesn't give Clark any tools to help him find another way. You may not prefer what's written, and you may not think it's particularly, "Superman" like; but the movie seems to draw the parameters of the situation quite clearly.

  • @josephpost5743
    @josephpost57435 жыл бұрын

I have always thought that a small change in the Krypton scene and logical follow up in the subsequent scenes would have resolved a lot of the issues. The Krypton rebellion should have been Jor-El AND Zod, together. They know their culture is at a dead end, their planet is going to die. They MUST fight against the establishment, but they both have shared but different goals. Jor-El to get off the planet, and Zod to save his people. Both think they have more time, but they're wrong. Zod is there when Clark is born. He's disgusted, but alos incredibly happy for his friends, having witnessed the first natural birth on Krypton for thousands of years. The establishment kill Jor-El. They capture Zod and imprison him. He bellows his promise to find Clark, but now it's to save him. Fast forward to around the middle. Zod confronts Clark, and surprises him with a welcoming hug. Clark finds out that Zod was Jor-El's best friend, et cetera. Now the rest of the movie means something. Zod cares nothing for humans. Clark does. Zod can't leave the system, they've run out of macguffin fuel and it can't be made again without hundreds of years of working with sub-creatures. Zod has to save his people. Clark must oppose his father's best friend, and choose between a good man trying to save his species and saving the people that Clark has grown up being afraid of, distanced from. Most of the movie stays exactly the same, even Pa Kent being a paranoid wacko, but now the film has an entirely different meaning and feel.

I think the biggest issue with Man of Steel has to do with Pa Kent and Jor-El. Every scene with one of them, due to its placement within the narrative, is given this grand importance as being informative to Superman's life despite the fact that neither character espouses any consistent ideas or beliefs. This ultimately leads to the film muddling the ethos of this incarnation of Superman, making his actions in the third act way more questionable, and preventing the film from having any semblance of thematic consistency. Pa Kent talks about how Clark is special, destined for great things, etc. while also saying that he probably shouldn't use his powers to save people because everyone would be terrified of him and he should continue the Kent family tradition of farming. Depending on the flashback, Pa Kent is espousing two entirely separate beliefs for what Clark should do and the film does nothing to bridge the gap, introduce internal conflict in Pa Kent (that would've necessitated him showing up in more than short flashbacks), or address Clark's feelings regarding them. It presents contradictory ideas, has no character really engage with them, yet presents both as equally important aspects of this Superman. Likewise, Jor-El makes a big deal about Kal-El being a natural birth and having the gift of choice, but also uploads his consciousness whom flat-out tells Kal-El he's meant to be Superman and even shows him his damn suit. Oh, and Jor-El infused the codex into his son, making him solely responsible for resurrecting the Kryptonians and inadvertently drawing Zod's antagonism on which the entire third act is predicated. The film does nothing to address any of these character inconsistencies, which is really inconvenient considering they make up what is supposed to be the central theme of the film: choice. Man of Steel teases the idea of being The Last Temptation of Superman, which could have been legitimately amazing, but instead is about a mostly wandering Superman listening to his two awfully confused or straight-up incompetent dads tell him to do or not do things until Zod shows up trying to get his DNA.

YOU SAID IT! I didn't think anybody else noticed that was the biggest problem with the movie! (The second biggest being how the characters never seem to address some pretty obvious things from the truck being destroyed, how Lois could track down Clark but the military can't find him, Superman CHOOSING to destroy krypton with barely a second thought, the destruction of metropolis, ...dang, they didn't address anything. If you literally made the dads more consistent then that gives Clark's decisions a specific purpose and meaning instead of allowing the audience decide what the meaning was.

Yes, this so much. One of the things I found most frustrating about the movie is that Superman never actually gets a chance to decide to be Superman. A good Superman story is one where he does what he does because of his ideals. But in this it's forced upon him by his fathers talking about destiny and duty and then by Zod demanding he hand himself over to them. There's no point in this story where Clark decides "I am going to publicly save people in dramatic fashion, because I believe in the value of humanity and that I can do more good by not hiding anymore". You never get the sense that he actually wants to be Superman, on any level. And if Superman himself isn't interested in the concept, why should we be?

Great video, however, the whole part where "Jor-El informs Clark that ship activated a beacon ,and that Zod picked up the signal and is now coming to Earth" is a too much information. Instead, Jor-El could simply say the ship activated a beacon, and maybe someone out in the universe could pick it up. Cut to deep space, where a ship catches the signal, and recognizes it as Kryptonian beacon, and a man (Zod), camera not showing him for cinematic purposes, tells the crew to head to the signal's origin. Keep it mysterious, Clark doesn't know that Zod is on his way to Earth, and when he shows up, it will be a big, cinematic moment.

I still can't defend Jonathan Kent's comment to Clark about the bus accident. Even if we're not following 100% the cannon established by the comics, I'm having a very hard time believing that a grown man like Jonathan Kent would even suggest to his adoptive son the possibility of letting a dozen of children die to protect his secret. That's more of a character flaw than the an example of human doubt. The implications of such an answer are horrific; it basically tells us that Pa Kent is okay with suggesting to Clark that letting helpless people die to protect a not-so-dangerous secret is even a viable option. Literally, Clark's parents are the ones who help him shape his ethics and this moment completely contradicts that. I know this is a re-invention of the character but it's such a contradictory moment that it doesn't even make sense. It is really irresponsible; it's not a moment of truth. It makes people think less of Jonathan Kent in the DCEU because of that scene. It is wholly out of character. DCEU's Jonathan Kent was a disaster.

How do you think Clark's life would have been affected if he was put in the spotlight as an superpowerful alien when he was still a kid? He would have been so harassed he wouldn't be the man that he became in the movie. He probably would have grown angry at the world for not letting him live in peace. That's what you all don't seem to understand. Besides, Pa Kent said 'maybe' meaning he didn't know the answer. He wanted Clark to save people but he didn't want his son to be taken away from him. The Krypton scene is actually crucial. The 3rd act of the movie is about whether Krypton deserve to resurrect or die. We see how entrenched the council is in their belief, to the point they undermine the survival of the whole planet. We see Zod resort to violence and force instead of instilling... trust: a BIG theme of the movie. We know what Zod want to build through Jor-el: a society genetically engineered according to his will. Above all, we know how Krypton is doomed to fail: Zod casually walked out after killing Jor-el to order the death of Clark, indicated how strong he believe the coup is won. Yet he lost. This shows that Krypton society could NEVER escape the hole they dug for themselves. The 3rd act focuses a lot on human characters: the army and the people at daily planet. The army went from shooting at to trust Clark, resolving the BIGGEST plot/thematic point of the movie. And both tried to save their fellowmen, despite their powerlessness, even when it cost them their lives. In stark contrast with Krypton, who gave up. And Zod, who planned on killing certain bloodlines on Krypton and failing that, everybody on earth. Imo the thing that make people think the 3rd act is a destruction CGI fest devoid of thematic meaning is because the two scenes are too far apart (and of course snyder's destruction fetish). So you already forgot the Kryptonians when you got to the human part. I would try to make them closer, make Jor El reveal it when Clark passed out on Zod's ship or something. Cut the birthing scene of course, it makes sense at the beginning of the movie but not here. Also you misunderstood that clark "deal with disaster in his spare time". At that point in the movie he only dealt with whatever disaster that crossed his path. This is to keep a low profile, honoring pa Kent's words. The movie made this too confusing though, because the flashback right after the oil rig scene is about super sense.

As long as your rewrite saves the absolutely incredible fight scenes, this is gonna be great. One of my issues with subsequent DC films was their inability to even come close to matching the sheer scale and visual delight of Man of Steel's fight scenes.

I think the "artificial" vs "natural" birth thing is... terrible. Some versions of Superman's origin have adapted things like this, but it is needlessly complex and thematically problematic. Zod's "hatred" for certain clone lines could easily be reframed as hate for certain bloodlines. As for having access to enough Kryptonian genetic material to clone the race... it's easy enough to just let Superman's father give him a record of such thing; it's not too difficult to imagine an advanced society keeping these things on file, and Zod could use cloning technology "atypically" to repopulate the species. Perhaps Jor El makes Superman's life the key to the data, and thus Zod needs his cooperation. I'm just saying that you're dealing with an alien... with super powers... making him a special alien that defied his alien culture and has his entire culture ark-ed in his body... is asking a bit much of us... with no genuine benefit.

Nando, "Man of Steel" is one of the very few films that is totally perfect for your kind of video essay format. There's huge potential for improvement. I've really enjoyed your videos- but I'm on the same page as you. MoS is one of the superior DC movies. It has interesting visuals, great actors, decent set up, the story structure is engaging. There is a lot I love about Man of Steel. Sadly, that first theatrical trailer is way more epic than the movie itself. It needed more defining elements of Superman (and yeah, maybe that includes brighter colors). Very much looking forward to the future parts of this series!

Nando, I love you. Really. But when you talk about Goyer like a good writer, in the beginning, I felt like dropping the video. Goyer is mediocre at best... He was involved in good movies and franchises, but every time he's involved in something, you can bet there'll be stupid and forced plot points. In the Dark Knight he wasn't at the screenplay and, lo and behold: it's the best movie of the trilogy. I can blindly go to the movies knowing he wrote something and I'll know the story will be mediocre or just plain bad. When I heard about Man of Steel and that he was at the writing, it was already set in stone the movie would be lacking something. And the same is true for anything else he's ever done. I'll go back watching your video now. Because you always make good points and I'm sure you'll have great ideas to fix the movie. Keep up the good work.

I disagree with taking away the opening scene on krypton, literally most people who hate it is because the movie doesn’t make clear of its themes that matter, the choice of what side Clark needs to choose. Humanity or krypton. And all the other ones. it’s not the “people aren’t smart enough” it’s just the movie has 1 line dialogue bits that literally make the movie or break it. Such as first natural birth in years. And all the symbolic nature of choice. Heaps of people I know( I know not millions) missed this. They are smart people. Just because it was 1 line at the very start.

What you say about the same information being "repeated" troughout the movie is false. The opening is meant to show the way the planet worked (which is important to understand why Clark is so special), to understand Jor-El and Zod's motivations and to show how Krypton ended up destroyed. Then, the part where Jor-El speaks with Clark is all about Krypton's exploration of new worlds (to explain how they chose Earth as an alternative) and finally the part where Zod talks to Clark in his dream is meant to explain how he got out from the Phantom Zone and his plan to rebuild Krypton on Earth. All the scenes are there for a reason. If they weren't in the movie, then everyone would complain that the characters had no motivation, that nothing is explained, blah blah. Maybe you don't want want to explore Superman's origins but I did like that David S. Goyer took the time to show some of Superman mythos that had never been explored in previous films.

Heya, Nando. Been watching your stuff for the past few weeks now; definitely digging it. So back when MovieBob made his "Batman V Superman: Really That Bad" video, I posted a rewrite I'd been cooking up for Man of Steel. Like you, I also enjoy coming up with rewrites for bad movies that had potential (Phantom Menace is another big one I'd been tinkering around with). Unfortunately, I don't have the cred to make such videos, and I'm not as comfortable in front of or behind a camera so I've hesitated to put these types of videos out. That being said, though, I'm really curious to get your thoughts on my rewrite. Feel free to crib some ideas if you'd like; I'm sure I unintentionally stole other peoples' ideas while putting this together. Hope you get something out of it! Without further ado, here's a shameless Ctrl V from my comment elsewhere… *Man of Steel* First off, call it "Superman". Yes, I know WB liked that "The Dark Knight" made money and they wanted this to be seen as "The Dark Knight of Superman movies" so they wanted to go with cutesy titles. Fuck that. They envisioned Man of Steel as the start of their own Cinematic Universe to rival Marvel. They want this film to be the new definitive Superman (hell, they gave him a new leitmotif, which I honestly like a _lot_ if the material presented matches the epic and sweeping nature of his theme). It's called Superman. Nuff said. *Prologue:* Same basic deal on Krypton, only less Pandora-ey and slightly more in line with the animated series (i.e. having the designs look somewhat futuristic but still pull from the Roman-esque designs Snyder was going for). Guns exist on this Krypton, but the primary method of combat is swords (to keep with the old Roman thing). The bred clones thing isn't the worst idea in the world, you can keep that; just leave out the whole Kryptonian DNA matrix or whatever. Zod will need Superman's blood later because he's a pureblood Kryptonian while he and his crew are clones. Truncate the prologue severely; planet's collapsing (probably from overmining it or whatever). Jor-El tries to convince the Kryptonian council that Krypton's about to blow, they don't believe him. Why? They're being told it's safe...by _Braniac_ . Yes, I'm borrowing Braniac's origin from the animated series, because it gives him a stronger personal tie to Superman (but still leaving Krypton's destruction out of his hands since otherwise you get into Amazing Spider-Man levels of "everything's this one entity's fault" bullshit). During the conversation, Jor-El unintentionally slips that he has to protect his son, alerting the Kryptonians that he gave natural birth, which is a big no-no (diluting the genepool and whatnot). So Jor-El flees to head back home to the wife and kid, and the high council sic Zod and his troops on him. Jor-El knows the planet's got minutes to go, so he asks Lara to stall for time. See, Jor-El's a scientist, while Lara's a warrior, meaning they're each best suited to their respective tasks. Jor-El will quickly set up an escape pod for their kid (a small package that they can jettison in time, but setting up a pod for a baby _and_ two adults will take time they don't have) while Lara holds the perimeter. So while Jor's setting up Kal's escape and programming in his AI to guide him when he grows up (explaining why Jor's there to talk to him but Lara isn't for some reason), Lara's standing outside their home awaiting Zod's troops. As they show up, Zod tells them that while she's a strong warrior, she can't possibly think she can take them all out on her own. She replies by saying that she has one thing that they don't: a maternal instinct. And then she reveals a gatling gun and fires away. Bam. Instantly iconic scene/line, makes both of Superman's parents heroes rather than having Jor be the only one of significance. Anyway, Jor is ready to launch Kal when Zod walks in, a beaten Lara in hand. He demands to cease the launch or he'll kill Lara; with a nod from Lara, Jor hits the button to send Kal away to safety, resulting in Lara getting impaled and soldiers rushing Jor, beating him to a pulp. While Zod and Jor stare down, the planet starts to go boom, with Jor gloating that he was right, Zod's about to die, and his son is safe. Zod impales him and leaves him for dead while fleeing with his crew. Without a care for any other Krypton populace (highlighting Zod's hypocrisy and self-centered nature), his crew suggests using their experimental Phantom Zone projector, which can suck them away into an alternate dimension to escape the explosion, but since it's experimental they have no clue when it'll spit them out. With no other options, Zod goes with that (the Phantom Zone here acting as a "time-free" zone, hence why he doesn't age in the 30 or so years of Superman growing up). Lara and Jor weakly lie by each other and look into the sky, talking to one another how they hope their son will be okay, and that as the last son of Krypton, he'll be able to do great things. And then boom. *Act 1:* So, instead of hard cutting to the tanker scene, we hard cut to Clark as a kid. Doug Walker was right in that the prologue has more than enough action, and we can take a breather after that. Idylic scenes of him and his parents. Ma Kent's casting is great, but for Pa, I'd go with someone closer to Martin Sheen, an older, kinder, almost saintly man. He is a real father, but he's also, well, America's father figure in the same way that Uncle Ben is. He should be real but immediately lovable, so that his later death will hit all the more hard. Anyway, childhood. Lana Lang is a major character. She's the love interest in this movie. "Why not Lois"? Because this movie's already trying to cram in enough material as is, and the Daily Planet stuff is extraneous. This is a movie about Clark coming to terms with being both a Kryptonian and an Earthling. We can worry about reporting later. So we get some of the same scenes used in the original movie. The scene of Ma Kent talking Clark through the door, good stuff. We can also do the bus scene. I think in the movie it's _implied_ that the girl looking at him is Lana, but here we make it implicit. No one knows what _really_ happened except Lana, who talks to Clark in secret, making her his first confidante. Then we get the "You are my son" scene revealing the spacecraft. Rather than the stupid "material not from this planet" nonsense, the fact that it's a friggin rocket that came from the sky (as well as Clark's abilities) were enough for them to realize that Clark's an alien. They talk about how it's okay for Clark to experiment, and that someday it'll be okay for him to learn what he is, but for now he's still just a kid. Cut to him graduating college (journalism degree; Lewis Lovhaug pointed out correctly that MoS Superman joins the Daily Planet for no reason as he spent his young adulthood bumming around as not-Wolverine). Pa and Ma say that it's time, and that Clark can decide what he wants to do. They've been experimenting on the craft and it looks like it's trying to display a message, but it requires a wide open space (it keeps trying to project a hologram, but it won't work inside the barn). Clark decides to strap the craft to his back and journey to the Antarctic on a trip of self-discovery (not before saying bye to Lana). He eventually gets there, plops down the craft, activates it, and we get Jor's hologram explaining the history of Krypton and why Clark has powers. The craft also opens a secret compartment to reveal the suit, which is something Jor had managed to pack in the craft; he and Clark have the "symbol of hope" conversation, so it's Clark deciding what the S means rather than him being super patronizing to Lois. He dons the suit (has a red belt and the blues are brighter; I'd prefer the tights look but I think the New 52 look (sans collar because that thing is ridiculous) is an acceptable middle ground) and we have the flight scene, big sweeping moment. (to be continued in the reply, hitting my character limit)

*Act 2:* Zod's ship finally comes out of the Phantom Zone. They realize it's been years, and that Krypton's long gone. With the hope of creating a new Krypton (and of being its new king), Zod decides to track Clark's trajectory to extract his blood to renew the cloning program. Clark comes home to his folks and explains what he's discovered. Zod shows up, broadcasts the message to Earth that they want the alien, and that they have 24 hours to comply or they'll begin their attack. Scenes of the government deciding if they should comply or retaliate, but Clark takes the initiative and turns himself in, not wanting innocent people to be hurt (following his father's teachings, which in this film are more in line with Pa Kent and way less psycho). _Only_ Clark is taken on the ship, and we get the same psycho nightmare thing, except Clark manages to get Zod to slip his plans rather than Zod outright saying "Yeah I'm gonna retool Earth, oh well lol". Superman flees, but not before some of his blood is extracted. Zod attempts the cloning process, but something goes wrong (maybe they didn't get enough blood and they need to bleed him dry to the point of killing him), and the clone ends up sort of imbred and messed up (probably due to substituting with some clone blood). While looking like Superman, his brain's not right, so Zod assigns him to be his muscular lackey. What does he name this bizarre creature? _Bizarro._ Yes it's not the origin of Bizarro in the comics, but we're taking a few liberties here. Anyway, Zod sends Bizarro and some foot soldiers to rough up Smallville to pull Superman out of hiding. Clark shows up and starts fighting them; he tries to get the fight out of the city and tells everyone to run, but they're staying put so he spends half the fight protecting civilians (and _not_ throwing baddies into buildings). When civilians ask who he is, he's about to say his name but, wanting to protect his folks, says to just call him Superman. Witnessing his acts of heroism, Lana (who recognizing him, obviously) tries to protect others, inspiring other civilians to also try to be heroes and keep each other safe. During the fight, Bizarro sees some civilians about to be harmed and, perhaps instinctually, decides to rescue them, which Lana catches. Superman manages to beat up Bizarro, but Lana talks him down saying that he tried to help people. They have a talk with him, and Bizarro sees himself as a hero and the two learn to interpret his backwards speech ("Me am best bad guy, me hurt all those people", etc). They manage to talk him into helping them stop Zod's plans. At the same time, Zod himself goes to rough up Pa and Ma Kent just to mess with Supes. Pa stands defiant and is mortally wounded by Zod. Supes arrives just in time to get the whole "You think you can mess with my mother" scene (though changes to "family" here), and rather than bashing him into Smallville, just starts pummeling him in the cornfields. Mask comes off, he begins his adjusting like in the original film. Dropship comes to pick him up and Zod says it isn't over and that he'll just keep killing more people until he gets what he wants. Supes would chase him down, but he goes to see after his dad. He's taken to ER, and instead of a tornado "No son" scene, we get a heartfelt conversation on his deathbed, with Pa asking why he can't be as strong as Clark is (with the implication not being physical strength, but moral character), and Pa tells Clark (who up until this point has been hesitant to fight people, trying to play defensively in the Smallville brawl and losing himself to rage against Zod) that it's okay to fight and hurt others if it's to protect people he cares about, and he dies. Pissed off and determined to stop Zod, Clark storms out of the hospital room, rips off his civilian clothes to reveal the Superman outfit and flies off. *Act 3:* Supes meets up with Lana, who's been talking more with Bizarro. Bizarro tells them about the Phantom Zone projector, which can suck the ship and everyone on it back into the phantom zone (and they can disable the return timer so they'll be trapped there forever). Bizarro will go in as an inside man to get the job done, taking Lana with him as his "prisoner". They arrive just as the Kryptonian ship starts bombarding Metropolis with its terraforming gun (not the whole planet this time, just Metropolis, and while there's destruction, it's more Avengers level "buildings get roughed up" rather than complete city annihilation). Bizarro tries to initiate the plan but Zod catches on. However, Lana and Bizarro are able to initiate the Phantom Zone projector. Meanwhile Zod heads out to stop Supes, who's trying to bash the terraforming device. As the ship is sucked into the Phantom Zone, Bizarro manages to get Lana out to safety (maybe a nearby military plane) but he's being sucked in, unable to escape. He mournfully asks Lana if he's a bad guy, and Lana tearfully smiles and says he's the worst. He peacefully smiles and is sucked away. Big heartwrenching scene. Zod, realizing that his ship and crew have been sucked away and can never return, and by proxy he can no longer terraform the Earth or recreate the Kryptonian race, has his whole "you took everything from me" speech. He and Supes have their big DBZ brawl, but this time Supes is constantly trying to get him out of the city while Zod is intentionally smashing him into buildings, making a point that he's going to destroy Superman's home as he metaphorically destroyed his (with Supes pointing out that it's no one's fault but Zod's). During the fight, Zod realizes Supes won't kill him, which gives him the upper hand. He pulls out his sidearm and prepares to impale him, but through some maneuvering they both get impaled. As they collapse on the ground, Zod mocks Superman that by destroying his home, he's doomed to be alone, thinking he's gotten the last laugh. Lana then arrives and calls for help, and gradually more and more people arrive to take Superman to safety. The shot zooms out to show Zod lying cold, alone and dying, constantly repeating that Superman will forever be alone. _Symbolism!_ Supes wakes up in a hospital with Lana, his mom, and a few doctors by his side. The doctors say that Ma Kent provided them with some material that could be used to operate on him (it's established early on that some debris got in the craft with Clark, which transforms into Kryptonite), and the doctors casually hold onto it, thinking nothing of it. Clark has a realization that he's the last Kryptonian alive, but comes to terms that he's an Earthling, and can protect the world as Superman. We then get his speech of how he wants to be "close to the action", and the scene of him joining the Daily Planet. Here we're introduced to Perry White and Jimmy Olsen, both of whom are name actors that were kept hush hush during the film's development (Perry can still be Fishbourne and make Jimmy...I dunno, Chris Pratt? This is before Guardians, and having him be in both franchises could be fun, and Pratt would do great at playing Jimmy as an optimistic but snarky friend to supes, but if you want to cast a fresher face that could work too). And then we pan to Lois, played by someone known for being more snarky (Zooey Deschanel would be my first choice, as she could totally channel the type of Lois we've seen in the animated series and Donner films, a smart woman who will do anything to get the scoop). She casually remarks "Welcome to the Planet" (which is a genuinely fantastic line), and Clark knowingly smiles as he's the only one who gets the double meaning. "Happy to be here, Lois." Credits. Post-credits scene: Clark setting up the Fortress of Solitude. His pod starts whirring up but then quiets down; Clark notices this, but thinks nothing of it. We hear in a quiet voice: "Braniac systems online. Entering reconnaissance mode." _Sequel bait!_ Woof, that's a lot. Well, let me know what you thought! I'm excited to see the next part of your rewrite, and I'm curious whether I'll end up liking yours more than what I had come up with.

The only qualm I have wit an otherwise very interesting script is that Jor-El just happened to have time to pack the suit. Considering his circumstances at the time it's a bit forced. Instead it should probably be that his mom makes it for him like in the comics. Somewhere in the middle of the film they work together on it with Clark cutting the fabric with his vision. This could maybe be after he comes back from the Arctic and dawning a blue ski mask saves the city for the first time. Or just stops some thugs. Maybe just wearing regular clothes. Or wearing a thin blue sweater.

I toyed around with a BvS rewrite a while back, but it’s buried pretty deep in my mind now. Basic idea is that it would be called “Batman and Superman: World’s Finest” and would have some things in common with the DCAU special, though instead of the Joker, the Batman villain would be Scarecrow. Scarecrow would help fuel Batman and Superman’s paranoia against each other, which would result in their fight, but the fight would only be about halfway through and would be far less grim, with both sides clearly not aiming to kill but to incapacitate. I could do a full rewrite someday. Maybe.

I'd say Batman v Superman or Justice League holds that honor. Man of Steel needed to reinvent Superman for the masses and that's no easy feet for such a beloved and recognizable character (as MoS's reception demonstrates) but having the Trinity in a movie and it being critically slammed and then the same with JL, the film that should've been the crown jewel? That's a whole other level disappointment.

Id make three changes: 1. The movie opens with the oil rig sequence. We don’t need to see krypton blow up if they’re gonna re-explain it in a few scenes. Also showing Jor-El place the Kodex in Kal makes it very confusing when they reveal that later and expect us to be shocked. 2. Superman tries to minimize destruction in the fight scenes. I hate seeing him bring the fight to the city/town. He shouldn’t be flying people through buildings. 3. Superman and Lois shouldn’t kiss. The kiss in the movie doesn’t feel deserved and they should’ve left out any romance plots and saved it for the sequels. I would leave the rest pretty much untouched.

This is one of the criticisms I understand, but always take issue with. Clark is not yet Superman in this film. He's never had to fight someone with powers on par with his own and in most continuities he's a brawler to the extent that he has no formal training in how to fight. If anything, I'd maybe tweak the Zod fight so that when Zod throws Clark through a building you get one moment where Clark sees debris from him crashing through injuring people who have yet to evacuate and maybe a few more of him trying to lead Zod out of the city with Zod just bringing it right back. Remember: Zod wants to hurt as many people as possible and is a highly skilled combatant and tactician compared to our newly minted hero. I too look forward to seeing where Nando takes this.

Its still murder if he chose not to save Ras Al Ghul and Michale Keaton Batman killed the joker Yes the destruction in Man of Steel was excessive but it made sense in Superman 2 there was still destruction (they did what they could in the 80s) And iblike how everyone realistically reacted to Superman especially the military in 197ps Superman he saved Lois and stopped a helicopter from falling and everybody cheered like fam in a football game. And no one question what else he can do or his intention. After Superman learned of his past and he left the Fortress flying acting like he knew he could do that and has been doing it for a while. But in Man of Steel he learns how to do that and he smiles and laughs when he learns to fly like a human who learns that he has the power of flight. (A fantasy anyone can relate to) and he has to learn how to control his powers like how Smallville did it

In the original movie his morals were never established. Zod was his first villain and he killed him. No less he killed him by turning his head too far when not being able to turn Zod's head was the reason he could not stop his heat vision. "Oh no. I can't turn his head away from that family or pick him up into the air by his neck or cover his eyes. I guess I have to break his neck."

It did not sell the idea that Zod needed to be killed and it was a silly way to have him killed. It also didn't make any sense that Zod would push Kal-El to killing him. His followers were all still alive in the Phantom Zone. He isn't the Joker. He wouldn't want Kal-El to kill him just to mess with his head and he didn't even know Superman had a no killing rule (because the movie never established that).

Or heck he could've killed Zod by accident. Maybe establish his ice breath early in the movie and have him try to use it to counter Zod's heat vision. 5:15 So what if those aren't ripped directly from the comics? It's original and its great. Jor-El only being alive as a projection is great because it gives Clark the chance to connect with his biological father, deepening the conflict within him between choosing Krypton and choosing Earth when faced with the choice of snapping Zod's neck. The codex being ingrained in his DNA is great because it raises the stakes and gives Zod a convincing incentive to go after Clark. Flashback scenes are showing what happened. Clark being told by Jor-El and Zod what happened is exposition which is a bad way to deliver revelations.
