The Mamas & the Papas were a great folk rock group in the 60's. I had their records. They were known for their smooth harmonies. They had lots of great hits such as "Monday, Monday", "Dedicated To The One I Love", "Words Of Love", "Dancing In The Street", "Look Through My Window", "Creeque Alley", "Twelve Thirty (Young Girls Are Coming to the Canyon)", "Safe In My Garden", "I Saw Her Again" etc. Mama Cass Elliot went solo & had a big hit with "Dream A Little Dream Of Me".

Believe it or not, American cars had a big influence on pop music in the 60's. Most cars of that era only had an AM radio, which had mostly treble and mid-range sound. Bass was almost non-existent. So pop music was arranged to sound good on an AM radio. FM stereo didn't become common in American cars until the early 70's. Nice reaction Em!

Easily one of the greatest vocal groups in history. No doubling of vocal tracks there, that's just four people singing; the reverb was usually added while mixing. Their harmonies were so perfect that they frequently created an overtone which gave the impression of a fifth voice, which the group nicknamed "Harvey". You picked up on their strong folk background which really shows in their voicing arrangements. It's definitely worth checking out are from their catalogue. Besides the hits everyone will recommend ("Monday, Monday", "Dream A Little Dream Of Me", etc.), I always suggest "I Call Your Name" and "Look Through My Window".

Some little known trivia. This song was originally recorded by Barry McGuire of "Eve of Destruction" Fame! It was written by John and Michelle Phillips for Barry McGuire to record and for them to sing background on. After Maguire recorded it John and Michelle decided to take a shot on it, using the exact same instrument and backing vocal track McGuire did, and that's when The Mamas and Papas were born.

I heard a story about the song that may be apocryphal since I can’t find any mention of it online. The group was rather unknown playing folk music in California in the early sixties. They got a message from a friend who wanted to know if they wanted to come and play at the hotel he was managing. They agreed and played for a while until they were let go by the hotel. They had little money and started island hopping using one member’s parent’s American Express card. The parents closed the card and it went on the “Do not accept” list that was mailed to merchants. When the Mamas found out, they were able to book a flight to New York. They lived in New York with had a bid folk-singing vibe. Since they were from LA, the New York winter was depressing. Michelle Philips liked to visit churches but her husband, who went to Catholic school, had zero interest. Michelle went into one church and pretended to pray. Some time later, her husband woke her up at night and had an idea for a some. They wrote together and sang in on the phone to their agent. He loved it and sent them tickets back to LA. After some time, it caught on. Maybe some or parts of the story is true but I like the tale.

Not only a really beautiful piece of music, I also love how they used a strong stereo channel separation back then. Ok, it´s not that natural (in a live setting the listener had to be on stage to experience it that strong), but it adds kind od a dynamic and often, like here, emphasizes the back and forth between the singers and the location of the instruments.

Back when music was good. When singers could sing without the aid of auto tune, and people could still incorporate instruments into their music before synthesizers made everything sound artificial. If you're looking for other songs from this group, they have many hits. One of my favorites is Creeque Alley, which is a funny story about how other musical groups of that era were getting famous while this group sat around trying to think of music and lyrics and waiting for their big break.

Good one, Emma! Loved this group back in the day. They were I think the first mixed gender rock group which is why they called themselves The Mamas & The Papas. They were also at the center of the Laurel Canyon, CA music scene in the mid-60's where many, many soon to be famous singers and musicians all lived and played together, Crosby, Stills & Nash, Joni Mitchell, Jim Morrison, The Byrds, Neil Young, Frank Zappa, Jackson Brown, Linda Ronstadt, and many more who were part of the Woodstock music festival. There's a wonderful documentary about it called Laurel Canyon that was released on DVD in 2020. You should check that out sometime. Thank you for sharing this one. 🙂

The female leads were Michelle Phillips and Cass Elliott. Cass had her own solo career after the group broke up. She had a beautiful voice and died very young. Listen to the group Spanky and our Gang, contemporaries to the Mamas and Papas, their song Sunday Will Never Be the Same. The female lead for that band Spanky McFarland took over the Cass Elliott spot when the band got back together for short tours. While Spanky's voice was not as strong she filled in nicely.
