The MAM Journals-Triumph Daytona 660

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

With the middleweight sector positively bulging with good bikes , is the Daytona a welcome new entrant ?
With the Daytona name synonymous with fast sports bikes, some may feel this new sub 100 hp offering is not in keeping, but I judge the bike on its own merits . What do I think of the specification , handling , engine, comfort and rideability ?
I cover the specifications, go for a ride and come to my , initial conclusions.

    Another classy, concise and in-depth motorcycle review from Mam Journals; thanks for sharing, Michael. The 660 Daytona sounds like a bit of a terrier…..great for the midweek blast on, hopefully, uncluttered backroads. And it looks good too; better in the red option, I think. Would I buy one. No. More or less for the same reason as your good self; not enough comfort for my ageing bones! I tried a CB650R which I thought was good with great looks and the usual Honda finish…..but along came Suzuki’s GSX-8R….more comfortable, a more relaxed ride (not constantly wringing its neck) and good looking with a nice soundtrack. Of the middleweight bunch you mentioned i’d prefer the Aprilia RS660, but because I’m a tad frugal-minded, the 8R does it for me.

    Thanks for the review. Pretty sure I'm about to trade in my 2018 CBR650F for one of these. When I test rode it, it felt very well put together and although the riding position is probably a tad more aggressive than the 650F (which is itself slightly less aggressive than the 650R), the SEAT was much more comfortable than the Honda seat. The on/off throttle was far superior to my Honda which can be quite abrupt in 1st gear. The completely plastic covered seat does slightly annoy me, the "fake frame" doesn't. I do like that its a good 35 lbs lighter than my 650 though!

    GSX8R is much more upright and felt to me much more like a middleweight sports tourer. The Daytona 660 and CBR650R have a more aggressive riding posture and better top end power making them a better choice if you’re looking for something more on the sport bike side than sports touring. I went with the Daytona 660 because I wanted that more aggressive bike feel and I found the characteristics of a triple cylinder engine much preferable to that of a p-twin and the more even torque and power distribution it has compared to the 4cyl CBR650R. I feel the Daytona hits a real sweet spot in this bike category. Not everything about it is perfect but it has it where it counts most imo. I have about 450 miles on mine at the moment and I’ve loved every one of them.

    If you get a chance , try one! It is a bit calmer than the RS but is still at the sportier end of these sub 100 ho bikes . You might like to also try the GSX 8R which is at the less frenetic end of the spectrum …

    I ride a Gen-3 MT-09 with an excellent quick-shifter as standard and I virtually never use it. I prefer shifting normally and don’t think of quick-shifters as anything more than a gimmick for street riding, completely unnecessary. Undoubtedly brilliant on a track though.

  • @michaelmam

    @michaelmam

    Ай бұрын

    Hi Dennis , Personally I preferred the 8R but that is as much to do with me as it is the bikes . The rider position on the 8R is more neutral , and the pegs lower reducing the “tucked” feeling of the Triumph which , with a more forward leaning puts more weight on your hands and wrists . The Daytona is the faster , more sporty of the bikes and the engine map adds to that feeling . Riding position is of course influenced by our exact body measurements ie how long are your legs , body and arms . Someone of the same height , can have very different dimensions which is why I always encourage people to make a short list of bikes that might like , and KZread videos help in this regard , and then go and try the top 2 or 3 . Returning to personal views , I am getting to the stage where full on sports bikes are more pain than pleasure to ride . The 8R is sporty but not sports and is very easy to ride. Would I like it more if it had another 20 bhp .. yes , but not if to achieve that you had to ride it constantly , on the cam .. Long answer 🤦😂 Hope it makes sense …

The Daytona 660 proved me wrong after a test drive .... it beats the CBR650R.... it accelerates way faster than expected.... The acceleration will even give my 2019+ Ninja ZX-6R a run for it's money up to 80 MPH, but drives a hell of a lot easier than any supersport in tight Asian traffic.

    I want to like the bike - as a '02 Sprint owner I'm a bit of a Triumph fanboy - but, I have issues with manufacturers putting disguises on bikes to make it appear as though it's something it's not. I'm referring to the faux frame spars. Just show the damned frame, and if it's not good enough to show, make it good enough to show. Seeing that already disappointed me, then to see the pressed metal foot controls ... it just seems cheap, cutting corners here and there. Okay, the functionality may be there, but I appreciate quality looks too. They're a good reason why I 'look back,' as you say. You can see why an Aprilia 660 costs $1000 more ... it has higher quality bits on it. How does it compare to a Honda, Kawasaki, or Yamaha?

  • @michaelmam

    @michaelmam

    They have definitely cut some corners to get to the price point but a very capable and quite sporty bike . Faster than most of its Japanese competitors which will influence some . Honda CB 650R might be close ? The Aprilia is more money , which is fine , if you have it ? Probably a case of you pays your money and takes your choice ?
