This game alone influenced countless game programmers & designers of the 80's. Period.

Games like this really were revolutionary. The majority of electromechanical games ran on a timer so it was game over no matter how good a player you were. Having a game that rewarded good players with extended time was very unique and made people want to play and enter their initials on the high score table.

Applause! Very nicely done. It's interesting to learn the history behind one of the most iconic video games ever made. I've been playing Space Invaders for DECADES and never knew the history behind its development. Thanks Jordan!

I’ve actually went out of my way to over analyze the game. Here’s my analysis: Well, the extraterrestrial invaders are oddly similar to the aquatic life of Earth. Such as cephalopods and arthropods. What's even stranger is that each invader appears to be a different species. Some sort of union of neighboring organisms with a common goal of colonizing planet Earth, which must mean they have formed an alliance for the survival of the individual races that make up the “invader” army. So the aliens would obviously have to be intelligent. Especially since they are capable of utilizing spacefaring technology. And it appears that each species has the complex capability of surviving within the conditions of space. And they can shoot beams of concentrated energy from their mouths. I wonder if that means that they have been augmented for that specific purpose: to be a living weapon capable of surviving in outer-space conditions. It’s unknown if the UFO is an automated machine, or is piloted by an actual organism. But it does act as a leading force for each wave of invader

This was an admirable attempt to try and tell the story with a bit of historical context, but there's a lot of info which just isn't quite right. I think your effort definitely shows, I just want to help frame those ideas that you have in some better grounding and research. 0:41 Taito never produced Pachinko machines and by the time Nishikado was there they weren't doing vending machines either. They were huge in jukeboxes. 0:58 Light gun technology goes well back to the 1930s. The Dale Gun style rifle games were just easier to produce. 1:30 I don't think anyone's ever claimed Nishikado created Elepong. The Gorges biography is rather explicit that he didn't. 1:52 Depends on how you count 'original' games, but you could call it the first. However, Sega reverse-engineered their Pong game, they did not officially import it. 2:07 The first exported Japanese video game was actually Nishikado's Basketball. 2:16 Not sure why you mention the VCS here. Nishikado is rather explicitly inspired by the arcade version of Breakout, specifically it's sequel Super Breakout which had the lines advance down the screen as in Space Invaders. 3:05 This incident happened during the Speed Race days in 1974, and it's completely meaningless in the context of the story you're trying to tell. 3:30 Only a microcomputer insofar as it was 'a system with a microprocessor'. It wasn't a fully featured computer because it was just a development tool for assembly language. It was not the first Japanese game to use a microprocessor, but certainly none were out at the time he started working on it. 3:45 "Characters" is quite inaccurate here because Space Invaders is drawn in a bitmap. No sprites and it's definitely not character graphics. 5:43 He did not create the sound, that was the one thing he did not do. 7:33 Good on you for pointing out the coin shortage myth. As relayed by several Taito America staff, it seems the truth of the myth is actually that circulation of coins was slow so the Japanese Diet worked with Taito to shuffle them out of machines faster. 8:13 Not the first arcade game to be converted, the first to be licensed for conversion. Atari and Bally had been doing their own arcade games since the beginning. 8:39 Total side track, but the VCS was not in a bad place due to Pong machine. Those were dead in 1978. There were larger business problems that prevented it from growing as it needed, but Space Invaders put it on the map for real. 10:03 Not quite. Nishikado was a known name in the general arcade industry. In the Gorges book you can see him getting accolades, and there's a newspaper profile of him from 1979 with him in a photograph. Certainly his relevant period sort of crested because he was never able to make a successful game again. He was really the first guy to get credit and be known, beyond Nolan Bushnell (who didn't even deserve it for Pong).

Hi, I think your source (this gorges book) seems to contradict mine. If you check in my description, there is some of the interviews I used with him, which has the information you've said is incorrect - I simply took it out of his mouth! Thanks for pointing this stuff out though, I'll see if I can get a hand on that biography and cross reference it with the interviews, and potentially update with annotations where needed.
