The Making of Modern Star Trek Figures
Ғылым және технология
As the Star Trek: Mission Chicago convention kicks off this weekend, we're visited in-studio by Exo-6, the makers of new one-sixth scale Star Trek figures from every series in the franchise. We chat with Exo-6's founder Schubert Tam about his direction and design for the company's figures, capturing the likeness of actors in iconic roles, and the challenge of replicating Star Trek's costumes and uniforms at this scale.

This has been one of the best interviews I've seen on Tested and I'm not really into collecting figures. Really appreciate hearing about the thoughtful attention to detail and the behind-the-scenes elements of the family background in textiles, engaging the cosplay community, recognizing the differences between set-accurate, film-accurate, screen-accurate and so on. Wishing this project the best of luck!

Agreed. Schubert Tam is a real artist.
I absolutely adore this man's passion for his work.
Some of the best scale models I've ever seen. The attention - nay, obsession - to detail is simply extraordinary. Art at its finest.
Loving Schubert's passion for Star Trek and 1/6. Fantastic interview.
Wonderful interview. His dedication to the actual characters makes for amazing figures.
Wow, these are remarkable. I especially like the vengeful Picard, Data, James T Kirk and Sulo shown. Also the 'emergency medical hologram mark I', one of my favorite ST characters to date.
I've been waiting for decent 24th Century Trek figures for a long time and I love these. Already got Q on the way and waiting for Locutus and other TNG era figures. I love his enthusiasm for the figures and his insistence on detail, very promising. Also great to hear he is adopting the InArts neck piece idea, hopefully he adopts their replacement hands idea as well.
As a cosplayer, it's hard enough to sew things that fit me, but making things that small takes skill. I'm working on a Lower Decks cosplay, and thankfully the more simple art style gives me a bit of freedom with my designs. The thing with lighting is also really important. For some reason, whenever I buy fabric, it looks totally different at home than it does in the store.

The reason is metamerism.
Haha look at him smile so proudly when looking at his creations. I can only understand about 10% of that satisfaction after painting one of my headsculpts. How I wish I could create something from scratch like what he has achieved with custom bodies and screen accurate scaled down outfits. Is there a 1/6 scale playlist that I can follow to learn more about these techniques? I heard there's a video on silk screen printing?
Looks like it’s turning into an excellent line. I was excited about Seven-of-Nine being made, I hope to see her released.
This guys work is just the cutting edge of ALL scale figures. Some uniforms could use more work but overall the quantity and quality of his work is just amazing.
WHOA those look amazing. He absolutely crushed the uncanny valley.
Ben Sisko 1/6 scale?....I'm in!
I admire his passion. 1/6 is my favourite scale and his figures are amazing. The attention to detail is beautiful 😍 💕
Awesome interview Nanjin! Can't wait to get more of these in my collection! That Locutus looks amazing!
Schubert Tam is passionate about his designs. I can see the commercial artist in him completely. I can understand his understanding of lighting and how it effects existing colors.
This is one of the best tested episodes ever can we have more like this please
I'm not into collecting figures but these look amazing!
These are amazing, and it really helps that he seems to know and care a tremendous amount about Trek.
What a chewy convo! Learned alot...He/ those are amazing!
Great job explaining the passion behind these!
A informative and insightful interview 👍🏾 I've bought a few of these figures already and have a few more on pre-order. Looking forward to future characters and diromas.
What a great interview!
These things look amazing.
These look amazing! Thanks for making this video!
So impressive, every single one of these is beautiful.
So much detail!
Great video interview, fantastic to hear Schubert's love and dedication. Great to see the Sisko figure. I was disappointed not to see Captain Archer here, he was announced but no figure has been seen. I love Enterprise and hope tomorrow's video has Archer and maybe Voyager era Seven of Nine. Thanks Tested for a great video. LLAP

Schubert "Nanjin" Tam is the captain Trek figure collectors needed. His endless passion, attention to detail and commitment to excellence is consistently at Warp 9. I'm proud to support this man in his efforts.
I think the Spock & Kirk figures are almost perfect... Picard & Data look perfect from certain angles, and a little "uncanny valley" from other angles. even so you definitely wouldn't get anything that looks as close as that from a toy store
The detail painting is amazing.
GREAT interview! I'd like to think that I have a very critical eye for accuracy and these models look amazing.
Those look PHENOMENAL!
Amazing sculpture! Great video.
Great video! Props to Schubert Nanjin Tam for achieving perfection in the 1:6 Star Trek world.
these figures look great, love the headskulps
Shubert is the absolute best and most passionate collector/builder/creator that I have ever met
They all look amazing!
Mr. Nanjin! Great interview and looking forward to getting more of your figures 😀
Excellent likeness of these miniatures to the characters and the proportion and colours are good they are miniature works of art
So much amazing work, but it's that Locutus statue that really has me drooling!
these are incredible
Was never crazy about Norm in the past but I have to admit he's become a better interviewer.
Damn, those look REALLY accurate!
great passion and great figures
The sculpts and paint jobs on these figures, IMO, are better than the kind of stuff we see from Hot Toys. Something about the skin looks so much better.
This man is awesome! He should actually be involved in the actual shows... His love for the franchise really shows. Beautiful 😍 figures. This man is a blessing 🙏 to hardcore trek fans!
Fantastic interview! EXO-6 future is very bright.
I work a lot with 3D printing. One of my regular clients has artists who sculpts very detailed heads for action figures and has me print them and ship them to him, then he sells them for people to paint and stick on bodies.
I'm watch Stat Trek thu for the first time, love it, might need these

Never Watch Discovery or Picard, it will destroy your brain. Watch TNG or Voyager
Interesting to know he has a family background in textiles. I have a couple of these figures, and the absolute stand out element of them is the uniforms. So it makes perfect sense.
Holy cow. This man is amazing.
I am officially in love with this guy! :D
Fascinating...
Norm is awesome. Great episode
this is great. why can't I save this to a playlist?
Impressive!!!
That Locutus looks awesome, and i like that Mirror Sulu a lot but......not really a big fan of the fluffy grey shoulders especially on Data hopefully they sourced better material and or stitching for the finals?
The facial details are unreal. Totally realistic.
The prototype Picard figure that Norm the host interviewer picked up is amazingly accurate head sculpt of Patrick Stewart. I can't believe they did not use that head sculpt for the first contact figure. If that sculpt was used I would have definitely ordered it. The one that was used is way off and makes me think of Mister Magoo.
Ahh, that Spock figure is gorgeous!
I have Janeway and the Doctor and they blow the Qmx figures out of the water. Can't wait to get more!
I love how he explained the body weight by using layers of fabric...in that respect hell need 18 to 20 layers of fabric for William shatner in the later movies.
That Janeway would make a good Mrs. Columbo figure.

There couldn't be a better person looking after the Star Trek figure license than Schubert Tam ❤️
..... Add 'LCARS' menu in the arch,
Damn. I thought it to be New dope Episode of Robot Chicken
Can we get a 78 Shatner face. And maby had potention to convert to one of the biggest horror movie characters ever!!!!!
These are soooo hard to find. :( :( :( Always sold out. Ebay is gauging buyers.
😯
I think that they are now making the best collectors figures you can get. I just wish they would scale some of there props for the figures to the right size. The Locutus arm is way to long.
Damn I'm gonna go bankrupt
Did Michael have a big afro like that? I remember her having shaved hair
Remove that S.T. Disco crying thing (2nd from left) and will be perfect the scene.
Just now
I like star trek from Charles
Expensive dust collectors.....
Ok
They still haven't quite gotten Picard's likeness right. It's unfortunate that they are wasting time and money with the kurtzman garbage. Overall the figures look pretty good, but there is still a lot of room for improvement.

@TrayChester01

@@rm10475 I don't think so. I haven't been impressed with any of them yet, and they keep making Picard's nose too big. It's like the head is all 6th scale, but the nose is 5th scale, lol. I am REALLY hoping the Seven of Nine figure gets made, if it is accurate. And from Voyager. Not that new crap.
@dammitspock

"Wasting time with Kurtzman garbage"? Only 4 figures out of 30 represent that era. EXO-6 have to release some characters from current Trek, which actually does have its fans in the younger generation.
Wow. The paint prototype of Picard at 16:40 has a far more accurate head sculpt than what was offered and I, therefore, had no interest in buying. The nose, lips, and eyes, particularly. It looks like it was sent out to Patrick Stewart and the idiot preferred a head sculpt that looked less like him!
Those 2 figures on the left side aren't Star Trek, I don't know what you'd call that abomination of a show.

Although to be honest, theyre very well made models! But yes, STD should be got rid of just like an std. 😄
Outside of viewership numbers (DISCO and Picard both have dismal numbers), the best metric for gauging how popular a franchise is, is through merchandising. Everything relating to the Star Trek IP from 1967 to 2005 sells like hot cakes, everything after sells like a rusty nail up your urethra. Remember when Star Trek used allegories and made you think rather than bludgeoning you over the head with current agendas that'll age like milk, and distracting you from god awful amateurish writing with seizure inducing action? The (actual) fans who generate the large market demand for classic Trek merchandise remember.

Thank you for sharing your opinions on the subject, and I also appreciate the attempt at gatekeeping Star Trek by separating the fans into groups of "actual" fans, and those who are not. What I find particularly interesting is you "actual" fans all actually seem to be a bunch of bitter curmudgeons who act against the spirit of the TV show you all claim to love and hold dearly. Imagine if you were transported into the Trek universe and actually met these characters you hold so dear. Picard would scold the fuck out of you for being such narrow minded dicks before handing out mandatory counselling sessions with Troi to get your goddamn shit together. Actual fans, my ass.
Wished those awesome figures would've arrived 10+ years earlier... I can't help it, but CBS Trek and those 3 Action Trek movies made me move on. Since 2016, I've spent about 230 bucks on Star Trek items, and these were 2nd hand via ebay. CBS made it VERY clear they don't want or need my money. :-/
why would you waste your time making nu NOT trek figures? when its finally expunged from the airwaves, it will be forgotten like a cured STD (see what i did there?). the other REAL star trek figures are pretty amazing though.
Pray for Ukraine !

Star Trek Discovery and Picard are a mess. Bad stories, bad writing, bad actors. There is nothing about Trek on these shows. Star Trek franchise is dead thanks to Alex Kurtzmam I won’t buy anything about These shows except TNG, VOYAGER, DS9 or TOS
LOVE that Sisko!!!
Love the Mirror Mirror Sulu!
