The Making of LEAVING LA by Tee Ken Ng and Tim Minchin

Фильм және анимация

This short film about how Tee Ken made the extraordinary Leaving LA music video is almost more fun than the video itself. I find it absolutely fascinating and extremely cool, and I reckon you will too. Next up: a film about the making of the “making of” film. 😂xt

Tim, If you want to still get your film finished. I for one would take part in crowdfunding it, because i've seen your work for years and i believe that an animated movie from your hands could be great.

You will never be able to make that happen, it's not an issue of lack of money or interest. In this interview from roughly 18:00 to 20:30 Tim explains why the project is dead, and it makes my blood boil. kzread.info/dash/bejne/qImOk7SwaZPOprg.html

@@ApocalypticSalad What's worse is that, from what Tim says in the interview, Netflix would have to license heaps of Dreamworks owned software to run it, which makes me wonder what deal is in place because Dreamworks Animation has made heaps of television shows for Netflix - see The Adventures Of Puss In Boots; All Hail King Julien; Voltron Legendary Defender; Dinotrux; Spirit Riding Free for starters.

@@channelzero2252 The difference is that those are joint ventures negotiated as such - DreamWorks' new overlords were looking to drop the project entirely, the only way it could've continued is if someone else was willing to buy it outright and the studio made that deliberately infeasible. They could have afforded to finish it if they wanted to, a contract with Netflix or anyone else wouldn't have changed the situation they were looking to "solve".

Tee Ken NG has the mapping in his brain for this art form the way Tim has the piano keys mapped in his brain. These two maps together take us to a transformation space for 5 minutes of time. What develops out of human potential is truly utterly incredible. This piece is a work of art.

I didn't realise it was ALL zoetrope - I presumed the singing bits were very very good CGI like you were talking about. Going back and watching again, it completely makes sense why you chose to do that, and makes the whole thing even more impressive! It's an absolutely stunning video and well worth all the absurdities and work of creating it!

How is it that Tim is a total genius, and was sat next to one at school too! What a classroom that must have been! What a great way to turn something that meant art was lost to the world, into something where art is reborn! The metaphor is so perfect, and beautifully represented in zoetropes! Can't imagine how much work this took, but wow, the end result is a masterpiece.Thank you to all involved.

Respect! I assumed it was all just computer animation created to look like a series of zoatropes, but to have actually made them as physical objects and then film them in motion is mind-blowing brilliance. Thank you for sharing this look behind the curtain.

Absolutely bloody awsome, what an insane amount of work, but the rewards of all that work is a visual masterpiece. A mixture of old world science and new world tech, I truly hope these zoetrope wheels don’t end up collecting dust in Tee Jen Ng’s basement, they should be a part of an exhibition to help support and inspire more creative and imaginative art around the world! Thank you! 😎👍

Thanks for releasing this BTS peek of the music video. I honestly was under the impression that most things in it after the beginning were done with VFX because it looked so good, but I'm glad to have been corrected. I just was utterly convinced that... ...there's no way... ...someone would spend so much time... ...on anything. =D

Wow Ken, you are one hell of a doggedly obsessively determined artist who does the most painstakingly beautiful charming and quirky animation I have ever ever ever seen. I just can't wait to share this with my dear clever and creative sister who did animation at university before the art got somewhat cheapened. This is freakishly fabulous work. Thank you sooooo much for putting a little beauty in the online world (not to mention Tim's beautiful song of course). Isn't it wonderful he has such clear diction that his fabulous lyrics can be appreciated first go! 🤗 Thank you Ken, you are a true gift, because art, music and friendship is what makes life worth living. I'm feeling inspired and had temporarily forgotten covid and the resurgence in pure beloved NZ, not to mention all the aged care residents and health workers who have been sitting ducks. Very sad. Blessings 👏

Mr. Minchin, I had to leave LA also. Not my place of birth, but I lived there for eighteen years. It was the best of times, and it was the worst of times. The memory that I keep is what flying into LAX looked like. Once we penetrated the "Smog Layer", I looked out of my window seat and saw that everything looked grey and dusty, and WoW...look at all those cars. When I finally retreated to my home turf again, I looked out of my window seat (no Smog Layer) and noticed that everything was green, lush, and populated with little furry animals. Glorious. Until I walked off the plane. Welcome to Indiana. I would very much like to converse with you. I have some ideas about raising children in a time of pandemic, among other things. I have a mandatorily populated TubeYou channel. Please feel free to leave a message. Keep On Rockin' ya fuckin' poseur.....

Copied from elsewhere about this project: "Faced with the technical challenge of filming something rotating at speed whilst dangling a camera in the middle of it, alongside all the usual considerations, we ultimately decided the best camera to use was an iPhone 11. Combined with the right apps and processes, the phone is an impressive filmmaking tool and its small footprint allowed us to get shots a standard camera could never have gotten. Working with something that people carry around in their pocket felt like a perfect fit for the entire DIY ethos of the project."
