How Australian musician Tim Minchin became an unorthodox master pianist

Australian singer, songwriter, composer and actor Tim Minchin is globally renowned as a musical genius, but when he sits down to play, he never needs sheet music - it’s all in his head. At home with his Yamaha C7 grand piano in Sydney ahead of the release of his debut album, Apart Together, Minchin describes his unusual path to mastering those 88 black and white keys.

Hat's off to that piano teacher who probably saw enough natural musicality to insist on giving Tim that final lesson... perhaps unwittingly but she has brought happiness to millions of people... ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Yes. Just one thing before you go. The tonal decryption key. Good teachers are worth their weight in diamond.

@@dmwalker24 Why would such a fundemental thing be the last thing you teach to a student?

@@cyanhallows7809 It wouldn't have been the last thing he was taught if he hadn't decided to quit taking lessons. In the beginning comprehensive music theory can't really be fully explored until the physical technique is up to a reasonable level.

I hope Tim Minchin goes on to make a thousand more records, or comedy specials, or musicals, or whatever he wants. Bloody brilliantness is all he is.

It looks like someone told Tim to not put his hair behind his ears, but he's used to doing so, so he subconsciously keeps doing it yet remembering that he's not supposed to :D it cracks me up, much love for him and his music ;)

Tim Minchin is an incredible pianist. I understood very little of the piano jargon in this video but hearing him talk about how he plays is just awesome! Huge fan here

Same, I would love to either have Mr. Minchin as a piano teacher, or as a teacher in some kind of Masterclass/Skillhare etc. Course

I feel like I'm similar to him only actually being taught for a few years but having a good ear for how stuff should sound and preferring to just come up with my own stuff - only nowhere near as talented as him. I can read music, but I'm not disciplined enough to sit and learn many songs. He has inspired me to learn more about chords and practice different patterns.

I'm surprised you studied for so long and were never taught how to make the diatonic chords from a scale. It' s a very basic bit of music knowledge
