The Making of Hushed & Grim
Музыка
The Making of Hushed & Grim is a documentary that chronicles iconic, GRAMMY® Award-winning band Mastodon’s critically acclaimed 9th Studio album. The 90 minute film is an intimate look at the bands creative process, which was largely influenced by the untimely death of the bands long time friend and manager, Nick John. The film also intertwines comedic skits that showcase the bands, lighter more humorous dynamic. Watch here: Mastodon.lnk.to/TheMakingofHu...

Alright music nerds.. we need to talk. Lol. Around 32 min in this video, Brent is tracking the outro to “more than I could chew”. What really blew my mind was the producer translating the 9/8 count for him by dropping the first quarter note beat and counting up to 4 for his cue to re-enter playing. This was super super cool and shows just how knowledgeable the producer here is. He took a complex idea and made it super easy for the musician to grasp it in a fast paced studio environment where the don’t get a lot of practice before laying it down. Edit: spelling error

I've known them since 1997. Met Troy and Brent that year, and played some shows with FHF. When they became Mastodon I attended all the local shows they played, and they're the same dudes today. Total sweethearts. I was at a show in Hickory when they did an off night on the Clutch tour early on, and Troy told me a story about Pepper Keenan playing a copy of Remission for James Hetfield, and James asked for the copy. Pepper told him "No." Troy and Brent both said, "Why didn't you give him the damned copy?!?!". They've progressed so much since the beginning, and I always look forward to each album they release. Always gold.
True artists. I love how they constantly challenge themselves. They’ve covered a lot of ground in their time. Each one of them is a fantastic musician and collectively they’re amazing.

I am so damn proud of our boys. Been a fan since around 2005 and never looked back. Mastodon thank you so much for so many years of great music. Now that so much time has passed your music has become synonymous with my memories, life, experiences, my own music as well. All I can say is thank you for the laughter and the tears…without sounding overly dramatic, you guys have saved me more than once. Pulled me out from under so to speak. And this documentary was nothing less than masterful and hilarious. The album itself, pure talented genius. A definite masterpiece of craft. There’s no other band like you guys, you have risen to the top of the metal and prog world in my eyes. This documentary was so beautifully done and Nick John would be damn proud of what you guys have accomplished here as we all are. The bond (almost wrote bong 👽 lol) you guys have is inspirational. It’s a huge reason why the music is so powerful. I love that you are all still in love with Mastodon after so many years, as I am and millions more. What. An. Accomplishment. When you stop and look back and then hear they hope to be here “in another 21 years” just puts the most natural smile on my face. Life has been very Hushed and Grim the past few years for me but I can see the big picture, the lighthouse shining in the distance, and you guys play a huge role in that. Thank you infinitely. P.S. I have to end it with a random comment since this is Mastodon here “Gigantium” really hit home for me. What a beautiful way to end the album ! I could only describe the tone as pure freedom like running or flying in a dream. With a hint of knowing you have to wake up when it’s done. I’m not cryin your fucking cryin 😂 “I wish I could run forever” could mean so many things. To me it has the innocent feel of a dog running through a field carefree. It’s like a sunrise after a very rough night. Although the dog in question is a giant sloth in my mind 😆
I just love how Mastodon has their own recording studio right now - they deserve to have that kind of comfort 👍🤘
51:30, It indeed helped so many of us, I'm sure. My dad passed away last December 29th in hospice after battling brain cancer (Just as Bills mother). He was diagnosed in September 2021 whilst I was overseas, due to covid restrictions I couldn't travel back home until October, I ended up booking flights on October 29th, coincidentally was the day the album was released. Whole album became my most listened of the whole year in the span of just two months. Songs like Dagger, had it all, Skeleton of Splendour, Gobblers of Dregs, Tear drinker, really hit close to heart. The whole album really conveys the load of emotions that comes with the illness & passing of a beloved one; sorrow, mourning, grief, nostalgia, etc. That part in Gobblers of Greg: “Waiting For the sun to rise So I can Say my last goodbye All that I needed from you was your warm embrace” was literally what happened with my father before his passing, he was very weak already the night before, he could’ve passed any minute, in a dark room with no one around, nevertheless, is as if he waited for my mother, my grandfather his sisters and I to be there at the time he was ready to let go. I sat next to him and hugged him as he passed away.. The week before his passing I also translated the lyrics from had it all and told him the story of this album as well, he shed tears... Bill, Brent, Troy, Brann, thank you all for this beautiful album, it sure did help me get through one of the roughest patches of my life and im sure I wasn’t the only one.

Mastodon is so much more than a metal band. Every album is better than the last one which itself was RAD. Very rare. Great riffs, great hooks.
I love this album so much! Whenever I listen to it, it never feels like it’s 90 minutes long. I enjoy seeing the making of the album too. We really get to see everyone’s contributions & what makes the music so authentic. You’re a great group of guys who collaborate so well with one another. I’m looking forward to more great music from Mastodon.
This album is beautiful. It’s a masterpiece and another brilliant incarnation from a band that continues to mesmerise. Even singing “you had it all” out loud brings a tear to my eye. Well done boys and thank you.
This Band and its members are absolutly valuable as musicans and human beings. Long live Mastodon 🙌❤
Living vicariously through you gentlemen
