The Making Of BREATHE

Young people from Vienna and Oxford embarked upon a journey with this BREATHE! project in August 2022. Using interviews, research, poetry and spoken word, they unearth these complexities and give voice to the histories that forged them. This video shows behind the scenes footage in the participatory process of co-education and consciousness building.

BREATHE! explores colonial histories, Black identity and heritage through African collections in European museums.
The project involved young people from across Europe who came together in the UK, France, Austria, Germany and Belgium to explore African heritage collected during the colonial period and create artworks capturing their discoveries, feelings and responses. This process gave rise to reflections on the colonial past and present, created space to celebrate Black identity and culture, and nurtured friendships.
This playlist captures some of the artworks created during the Oxford project: BREATHE! Histories of Colonisation in 3 Objects. In August 2022, 12 young people from Oxford and Vienna came together to research 3 objects from Zimbabwe and Nigeria in the Pitt Rivers Museum over 10 days.
BREATHE! is funded by Erasmus+ and the Arts Council England.
