The Making of an Acrylic Calabash

Just some of what goes into making one of the Acrylic Calabash pipes. Lot of time and multiple changes between machinery. Vid is long even at 4x speed. Didn't include the texturing of the metal work, shaping the lower portion of the Cup or it's finishing, the 40 minutes to bend one of these into shape.

Do you mind my asking where you source your acrylic from? Are those 1.5x1.5x6" standard duck call or handle acrylic blanks? Are they real cast acrylic or are they a polyester resin? Looking to maybe do some experimenting myself and wondering if I should cast some resin/alumilite blanks (I make pens and have started casting blanks) or if I should source some real cast acrylic (or buy some call blank material). Thanks!

They are from a buddy that sells on ebay, and another source. One is (in this video) stores.ebay.com/acryliccalls?_rdc=1 The other is also large diameter cast acrylics from E-plastics I don't use Poly or extruded because it doesn't bend well or breaks

Thanks for sharing the info. What is the starting diameter of the blanks you start with before turning?

For the acrylic from e-plastics- any (almost) size you want to order, from acryliccalls- I n=believe they are just under 1 1/2" (1.4 something if I recall)

I seen this conversation, obviously both of you are doing creative art/functional design pieces, I'm wondering how much would this Calabash and similar sized and quality smoking pipes sell for? As I've been watching people hand make different pipes over the past week and I think it's really amazing what you can do with a wood lathe and Kyle I've also been watching people make custom turned pens I'm also wondering what price range you resell them for? Where I live these handcrafted pieces you cannot find by walking into a store, so this stuff has peaked my interest

What a pipe retails for will depend on the quality of the work you produce and how long you've been doing it to some extent and whether your potential customers perceive the same values you have deemed it worth. So many people a making pipes and pens right now it is impossible to say what value to place on any given product. All you can do is give it a go, learn as much as you can and continue to improve.
