The Makalu Disaster

Ойын-сауық

In the Spring Himalayan climbing season of 2019, several teams of mountaineers would capitalize on a small favorable weather window to reach the summit of Makalu. Unfortunately, not all who set out for the summit that Spring would return home with their lives intact.

In terms of difficulty & danger, I’ve always considered Makalu to be, arguably, one the world’s most underrated peaks. She was the very last of the non Karakoram 8000ers to be topped in winter - for very good reason. Even for the most elite high altitude climbers, death’s a near certainty if one underestimates this mountain.

I learn from these. I am an armchair mountaineer, and really enjoy the presentation. One thing that would help us that are not well versed woukd, if possible, to show the route or make sure the view we see is labeled as the face they were attempting.

The best part of the docs on this channel is the music. Very atmospheric. I feel certain that this Indian climber would have spoken out about any searches for his body, especially since another Sherpa died trying to carry it out. To me, that's the saddest part.

Quick question 🙋‍♂️ Are you aware a man on the Hindenburg only boarded because he was to be married. He had to be convinced of its safety. If I’m not mistaken HE SURVIVED and the man who spoke of its safety ironically perished. Thought air disasters would eventually make it to your channel. Honnold movie bought mountaineering into focus for me. You enhanced it 10 fold

Czechoslovaks in 1970s chose to try a new route (I think only them climbed it, no-one before them or after). Their first expedition in 1973 didn't reach the summit but lost a member in the attempt. They returned three years later, this time succesfully climbing it but from two men who made it up only one made it down. Years later some other climber who partialy crossed their route found him frozen. Says something about the mountain, I think.

When you get a summit fever and continue up long after you should have turned down, it's a question if it was the descent which killed you or the decision you made on the ascent. Or maybe lack of oxygen which compromised your thinking. The mountaineers from my country - (former) Czechoslovakia, made two attempts in 1970s. In the first one (unsuccesfull) they lost a man due to an accident on the way up, in the second (succesfull) they lost a man on the way down. So the had it 50:50, but I am not sure how it is with the overall score of this mountain.

I like your honest comment about how you really feel about these mountaineers, causing some respect I find some of these mountain climbers to think that they are above rules or don't think things like death applies to them and have some don't mind leaving their friends, partners or guides to die as long as they reach the top How can you brag about that once you've stepped over the dead bodies of your compadres maybe not this video cause I haven't watched it yet, but I kinda understand your sentiment

They probably know they should but it could be years before they get the opportunity again. Yup, better that than losing their life, yada yada. Anybody attempting that type of thing has to know they are risking their life, even on a good day.
