You know, I wonder what the Church would have done if the Other Circus had succeeded in their ritual.

It just dawned on me that all this is isolating Jon too, not just Martin. I mean, Martin was the only one to remain consistently supportive of Jon all throughout the first 3 seasons, inside the Institute anyways.

It's interesting that the less human Jon is, the more humanity he gained. He barely had any empathy in the first season but look at him now, he has a lot of empathy.

i'm starting to think that those developments aren't coincidence, as if Jon tries to hold more on to his humanity, now that he isn't really human anymore. Plus, it continues his arc of trust from the end of season 3, he realizes that part of what makes him human is the connection to other people, so now he cherishes them

loved to hear another Daedalus statement, as gruesome and ominous as it was the real life Jonathan talked about how the fear of the dark is so common in horror it was difficult to come up with something refreshing BUT HE DID IT!!! CONGRATS it honestly was amazing to hear such a philosophical, even religious take on the matter... just. wow. also the idea of THREE avatars of different fears launching people in space just to be tourmented is HILARIOUS

jon: literally keeps saving people and spent three days in hell for daisy and to help make basira feel better, has never murdered anyone (at least who didn't deserve it), is the sweetest being, was in a coma for half a year, isnt even human probably and is scared, is just trying to help people, is tired, cant control anything happening to him and doesnt even want the mind thing, cant die, is lonely and misses martin, just keeps h e l p i n g people literally everyone: fuck you i dont want to talk to you ever again once this is over is NOBODY CONCERNED FOR HIM AND HIS HEALTH?? It's starting to seem like the Mantles arent unique to the entities, but a manifestation of powers independent of them. A role and powerset that coalesces into certain people, to uphold a balance at least some of the entities knows must persist. The Web, for example, and I'd wager the Beholden knows as well.

Okay, so. I wasn't the only one wondering about that Jan Kilbride remark, right? They probably said it outright in the earlier episodes, but I've long since forgotten all of these names, so if you're like me - here's a quick explanation: Jan Kilbride was the dude who was Fairchild's "protégé" on Daedalus. Cue MAG099 (which was before MAG106 containing Kilbride's full story). It's a statement regarding the Buried, at the end of which Gertrude mentions Jan, her "suspicions" about him and almost feeling bad about something. So. Remember how she disrupted the Buried's ritual by literally yeeting a Void-touched corpse into their Sacred Pit? Yeah, well, we know who that corpse was now. Hurray. I'm sure this was the only thing we all needed in life.

In the episode with The Pit in the middle of the road in that US town, just before the Pit was destroyed the statement giver recalls travelling past an old woman standing next to it, gazing down into it, with a younger, weeping man sitting in her parked vehicle nearby... :( So I guess Jan was there to willingly die and be thrown into it, that's sick. Poor dude. And Gertrude's a mf'ing murderer.

ohhh this take on Darkness is surprising. and terrifying. god, Manuela. this episode was very well written, I mean, I can actually follow what twisted her mind to this. angry atheist that goes from relying on science to hating it because she's found a more comfortable corner somewhere else. can't say it's not, at least a little bit, relatable. at least the first part. jon sounds sadder and more lonely and detached every episode, which is distressing and heartbreaking to hear. I do not like Elias, and him calling Daisy "bait" is disgusting. that said, it's interesting that he knows that it was his powers that got him out of there, when not even Martin and Jon knew for sure. and... he does know a lot more than Jon does, and he doesn't seem to want the Extinction or the Darkness to take over so... I see why Basira is going along with him

I think the others in the institute have heard just enough to be wary of Jon, but also can probably _feel_ that he is, well, different, not human- and that's unsettling. Poor guy, as if this wasn't hard enough already. Jon's trying so hard to hold on to his humanity, and everyone is just treating him like a monster.

It's very ironic. She starts by slamming religion and talking about how what Christians deem "natural" is entirely biased... and then does exactly that. Appeal to the "natural" state of the universe. It goes to show how manipulative the Fears are. Or just fear in general. How it lies to you, makes you think it's the logical choice, when in fact it's completely illogical.

OHHH So the Lukases and Simon Fairchild helped out the Dark because they could also use the Daedelus for their own purposes. Because while Manuela was furthering potential dark rituals, the Lukases conducted their own experiment on the person who was in the isolation study (forgot their name) for The Lonely and Mr. Fairchild was feeding The Vast w/Jan It makes a lot of sense that these are the three powers that would be ones present in space, and, idk I just found it really satisfying for it to kinda click together in my head. I get so wrapped up in all the words and statements, that I often forget its supposed to be a statement at all.

If this were a D&D game, it is literally a war between warlocks on how to call in their patrons first/stop opposing patrons from messing with their patron. Then there's the odd wizard here and there (Leightner) who works with the weird effects, the few sorcerers who got given abilities from the aftermath of the happenings (Georgie). This proves to be quite the neat little plot for a campaign.

That first half being all philosophical was really neat 🌌🌠

Even though it contradicts my love of the Eye, I find myself also infatuated with the Dark. There is something so poetic about this particular portrayal of this entity, that infinite, unforgiving, unfeeling darkness that is not nothingness but the absence of light -- and that light cannot survive without it, but the Dark can easily survive without light. It's not comforting, but it is _poetic._ god I love this podcast

All these mentions of Ny-Ålesund make me think of the time my professor did a presentation about his time there and how I had an interview for a PhD position once that would require me to do field work on a boat by Ny-Ålesund… which honestly just sounds like the setup for a magnus institute statement

Let’s all think back to when we were listening to the first episodes, to season 1. We were just listening to a collection of weird encounters and ghost stories, we knew there was something fishy about the Institute but that was all. Jon was doing the skepticism act and it all felt like they were just doing their jobs, nothing more. While we were listening to that, there were several crazy avatars of the Powers running around setting up rituals to bring the world closer to their eldritch gods and bring about the end of life as we know it. And we had. NO. IDEA. Isn’t that fucking insane to think about?

Wow someone here clearly played too much Hollow Knight. I know you can’t defeat the Radiance, Manuela, but no need to form a religion because of it

I feel so bad for Jon right now he must feel so alone

I haven’t talked about the other rituals and fear much but this one I feel on a personal level, not because I fear it, but everything he’s talking about is something I’ve thought. Dark is peace, rest, natural, but ultimately cold and lonely. Light is warmth, creation, change, but also chaos and sadness. Ultimately we should fear neither. We should not worship the light, as it brings up pain, but we should not retreat to the dark, for it is cold and uncaring. Live life fully, but let yourself rest when needed. We live because of the light, but we cannot live without the dark. Let everything be.

I hate the Dark! It's logically contradictory. Religion is inherantly about enlightenment. To form a church centered around the absence of knowledge, you need to spread knowledge. This statement giver found out about it through science which is about discovery! And as I write this, I half wonder if that's the point? That this is the only entity we can't understand? Also the Dark is literally the opposite of the Eye, so I feel like Basira should understand Elias's stake in stopping their ritual.

In actuality there exist no complete opposite of any two powers all could benefit and clash against each other. Eye is about somebody is watching. Foresaken/ lonely is about nobody watching. Eye is about knowing stuff. Stranger and the spiral is a sore thumb to that by playing at memory and identity. Hunt and slaughter sounds similar but at a deeper level they are different. One wants to keep finding, while the other is just mindless damage for the love of cruelty.

Fear of heing hunted comes from the fear of what is hunting you and what it wants to do. Fear of madness comes from fear oc the pain that madness, the twisting of senses, brings. Wow, Maxwell and I are pretty much exactly the same... up until justifying heinous acts. But still, everything he said, about the dark nature of reality, about the self-righteousness of prejudice... it's like you reached into my own past and plucked out my thoughts.

i’ve never seen anyone commenting on this, but as a norwegian who has been to Svalbard with a sister who has stayed in Ny-Ålesund, it is SOOOO funny the way they talk about it. like first off, yeah perfect for the dark, there’s basically no sun during winter, and Ny-Ålesund is basically just a small scientific research community. second off, Svalbard is an island group (which also means it is ON Svalbard not in, Elias should KNOW that), north off the coast of mainland Norway, and also more complicated than being entirely part of Norway, we share some parts with Russia f.ex. and it is a demilitarized zone (amongst more). lastly, the way they pronounce Ny-Ålesund is hilarious (for obvious reasons). fun fact there is also a university a bit further south of Ny-Ålesund on the same island (Spitsbergen) in Longyearbyen, you could do an exchange year/semester there!

Honesty there's so much mileage to be gotten out of fear of Outer Space, i absolutely hate it

The whole idea that darkness can exist without light is stupid, you wouldn't even be able to perceive darkneas if there was no light, the universes exist in balance, no form of matter can disappear, always turning into something else, believing that darknes is all there is or should be is depressing, sad and physically wrong. Amazing episode btw one of my favourites

darkness as a quantity doesn't even exist, it's like saying you can have negative apples, if there isn't an apple it has nothing to do with apples. there could be a thousand reasons why an apple isn't there but why does it matter where the apple is? same with photons. there is no "negative photons" the idea is stupid

I have JUST realised something. It’s mostly irrelevant, I’m just leaving it here to have it written and don’t expect anyone to care, but it’s an interesting coincidence imo. I have an OC (loosely based on/technically a Discworld OC, if anyone was wondering) who works with a group of interdimensional Librarians defending their worlds from eldritch beings trying to invade them. Everyone part of that group can be referred to as a Librarian, and this includes my OC. Here comes the coincidence: that OC is called Elias 💀 I thought it all had so much resemblance to TMA, I just had to talk about it… (btw the reason he’s called Elias is because my high school’s librarian is called Elia.)

This just occurred to me; maybe it’s my ADHD and OCD but… if I wanted to contain the avatar of The Eye, i would first make sure that the cell he was welded into (not locked) had many many cameras pointed at him which were out of focus. They would record onto magnetic tape which would spin around in a box with no light, passing around a permanent magnet to scramble them before being recorded over. Every hour, a blind record keeper would measure him in every conceivable way, writing down his height, weight, activities, fingernail length, etc etc etc and put the resulting papers into a special chute to a constantly running burner, and the ashes buried every midnight at the new moon by someone wearing a blindfold. Every window and opening would be covered in glass, but the kind that distorts light to provide privacy. Finally, he would also have a metal blindfold welded around his face. I think that would do it.

"Nature is perfect, and all that is unnatural is wrong" I can see the slippery slope from here. Vatican 8deals down to the bone without a wisp of personal comprehension. To understand, and pursue balance in an unbalanced world, is natural. A shame so few give up due to its difficulty. I'm surprised I sympathize with the Darkness follower, at least in the point that their parents were blind.
