It's either got to do with their secret plan or because Jon and Elias want Martin as a possible backup archivist. I don't think his motive was primarily that Martin doesn't get hurt. Would be terribly out of character as well. Might still be a secondary or tertiary motif.

Okay there's something fascinating going on here with Jon and Martin that I don't see a lot of people talking about so I wanna put it down. MILD SPOILERS in the sense that this is all stuff we know by now, but it might not me 100% clear until the next couple of epsiodes. NO PLOT SPOILERS tho! We all know now that Martin has a crush on Jon, that's super clear. Jon's also straight up said to Tim that he's listened to ALL of the statements so we know he heard Basira and Melanie talking about it. We also know that "It was Martin's idea" ... whatever they're going to do with Elias. Dasiy said so. So... even though it's really cute, Jon being protective of Martin and telling him to stay behind... it was Martin's idea. He's pretending to be shocked and affronted. Jon's pretending like he just thought of it to protect him. This was a calculated move against Elias even if we don't quite know what they're planning yet. BUT THAT'S NOT EVEN THE MOST INTERESTING PART. I'm pretty sure Martin knows everyone knows about his crush at this point. He's not dumb. He knows people, he's insightful. And Jon? Jon heard it discussed in a statement. In the office. Where Elias seems to know everything that's happening. So... they both know, but more importantly, they both know that ELIAS knows. So this move? Jon wanting to protect Martin? Martin hating the idea and railing against it but ultimately doing what Jon asks of him? They're actively weaponsing their feelings for each other against Elias and I think that's very sexy of them.

I love that Gertrude's secret plan to stop the Unknowing basically amounts to "blow it up". I'll be honest, I really wasn't expecting such an unsubtle approach.

As a lady of a certain age, I really do have a crush on Gertrude. I think my wife will understand!

I have an ungood feeling that with Tim was foreshadowing :(

this VIOLENTLY brought back memories of a month-long researching binge on the Mechanical Turk. ten year old me thought it was the coolest thing i had ever come across, fourteen year old me is bloody terrified

as a Hungarian hearing a statement set in my city made me almost cry I'm!!! I can't believe people know we exist BUT I gotta say. The slaughter facing the stranger has the vibes of a complete chaos in the face of the unknown. And Tim swinging randomly at stranger's at the unknowing also has the vibes of complete chaos at the face of the unknown. So I love it.

I love how exhausted everyone is to be dealing with Elias. They all sound like they've been blackmailed into the room and would rather be reinacting The Orient Express but are putting up with him. And then there's Elias himself going "Well, I have a few pointers for your plan to prevent the end of the world, but you're doing great kids 😊"

Everyone is just so DONE with Elias and his bullshit and I live for it

I was laying here with my eyes closed during part of this and have absolutely no idea how awake I was. Usually I’m able to tell if I was half-asleep during something because things stop making sense, but I am genuinely uncertain here. I could have slept through most of the statement, or been awake for all of it, and I’d believe either possibility

Seeing as this is The Stranger, confusion is an obvious thing, but with what Gertrude said, did The Slaughter, or one of their avatars at least, stop The Stranger's ritual? The soldier fired the cannon, which stopped the performance, and then Gertrude mentioned it was an Avatar of the Slaughter. I suppose the entities don't entirely want the others to finish their rituals before they do, but I still find it odd.

Jon absolutely listened to the gossip that Martin has a crush on him, he's way too protective of him

I love how you can hear how uncomfortable Gertrude is as she describes The Unknowing

So that was a little peak to what the unknowing would look like? That's what they meant by "changing the fabric of reality"? God can you imagine a ritual of another being succeding? A world of The Vast, or The Lonely? Or The Flesh and Hunt? Horrible, horrible.

My theory from this episode and what we know so far: I think that the reason why Martin and Melanie will stay behind is because they've planned for them to do something against Elias/the Eye while Elias will be focused on John and the rest trying to stop the Stranger's ritual and, thus, he will be distracted. They've already established that he doesn't in fact see and know everything at the same time they're happening, so they'll use this opportunity to do something against him. Other than that nothing much else in this episode, things were pretty straight-forward with the info we were getting, only thing that bugs me is that the name Wolfgang sounded somehow familiar and I couldn't remember if it is because we've heard it before in this series or if it's because it reminds me of Wolfram, a name I know from my studies :3

Deep down, I know John not wanting Martin in was only play pretend in their plan against Elias but my gay heart is crying anyway. And maybe John choose Martin to be the one who stay behind because he want to be sure that Martin is safe. We can have both.

@Leo Morris In defence of weird British people, we generally walk everywhere, so three hours is a long time to be in the car. I used to go down to Cornwall every year - that 6 hour drive felt like the end of the world, sometimes. Anyhow, we Brits can't go very long without complaining about things else we keel over, so those three hours would be horrendous. (Edit - I should probably mention that I'm being sarcastic, before anyone takes me seriously.)

@@fiddlesticksmeow6269 it took me a moment to realize that you meant 6 hours in *total*, not 6 hours straight. Because I've been stuck in the car for 6 hours straight (not counting 3 or 4 15-min bathroom breaks and pitstops), and it's h e l l. 3 hours straight, eh. It ain't so bad. It's not great, but it's doable without losing sanity. (It's roughly 1.5 medium-sized states worth of distance)

@@thesewinggeekmiri9029 Indeed, 6 hours total! With breaks, of course. There are plenty of service stations, thank goodness. May I recommend the Gloucester ('Gloss-teh', because we can't spell our own place names) service station? It's nice; they sell noodles. These days I get the train places because I really can't sit in the car for that long without feeling very ill. I suppose I don't drive, so perhaps it's a passenger issue?

I understand that this is a Stranger/Slaughter episode, but I felt like there were some Spiral elements in it too... although, the I Do Not Know You and the It Isn't What It Is can sometimes look similar. I reckon they work together sometimes given how easily the Stranger's blood orange could bleed into the Spiral's mango yellow

10:30 when Gertrude reads "from an old friend" does anyone else hear that odd noise in the background directly after? Is it just her breathing or something else? A shift of papers turning? Hard to tell. It sounds like someone in the background says "sike!" Like it's a joke. 😂 Does the eye have a sense of humor?

You probably know by now, but their other plan is revealed during the season 3 finale. They’ve been avoiding talking about it on tape, so both Elias and the audience don’t know any details of it as of this episode. :)

He's "nice" to everyone until pushed. He's not interested in having an argument or escalating tensions.

Elias, a known supernatural entity with enhanced knowledge and sight abilities: You're *really* gonna want to *not* on the whole Tim front guys. Seriously, leave him behind. The Team, with basically none of the above: n O (I have a feeling this is going to go drastically downhill in a Tim related way)

Elias is, above all else, still a shit boss.

So, couldn't they ask The Slaughter for help again? It clearly isn't fond of The Stranger and has disrupted the ritual before, surely there's an avatar out there willing to bring forth a bit of carnage to the party yet again...
