The 1176 is one of my favorite compressor/limiters!
It’s got a great signature sound that is very useful on a variety of sources, particularly vocals and drums.
In today’s video, I’ll give an overview of the 1176, how the controls work, and show you how I use it on some vocals and a drum bus.
What are your thoughts on the 1176?
Do you have a favorite revision? Let me know in the comment!
*** I forgot to mention that when pulling the RELEASE of an 1176, that will add an internal High Pass Filter SideChain to the Compressor's detector circuit. That's another little secret :-)

Hi! I just wanted to add you can also click on "Release" to lift the release knob which adds a low cut filter to the detector signal, so the compressor doesn't react so much to the low end in the signal. In the manual it is refered to as a sidechain filter: Sidechain Filter Note: The Sidechain Filter control does not exist on the original hardware or the 1176LN/SE Legacy plug-ins. A fixed 10 dB per decade (3 dB per octave) custom linear filter is available for the compressor sidechain. This function minimizes low-frequency content from the compressor's control sidechain, reducing excessive gain reduction and/or "pumping" on bass-heavy audio signals without reducing bass content of the audio signal itself. To toggle the function, click the "/" filter symbol and/or "RELEASE" text label beneath the Release knob, or shift-click anywhere on the Release knob. When the Sidechain Filter is active, the Release knob is "lifted" and slightly enlarged. Note: The sidechain filter only acts on the compressor's sidechain signal. While this filter can produce an audible change in dynamics behavior, it does not act directly on the audio signal.

As a teenager in the 90s, I was in a hip-hop band. We mainly used Roland JV and XP gear. When I programmed the rhythm on the good old XP-80 synthesizer and tried to make it sound like the hit songs of that time, I really beat it up, hoping for a fuller sound. But no matter how hard I tried, it still sounded thin. A few years later, I learned that to achieve that sound, you need a 1176 compressor. Your videos are awesome! Love it!

The attack times are much slower than on paper due to it being a feedback type compressor. I tested several 1176 plugins including waves (both colours) and arturia on slowest attack settings + fastest release, with a flatly clipped kick signal and all of em seem to respond within the 10-15ms range where the "attack" effect rounds off. About 4ms for both settings on fastest.

I was searching for some ideas on how to tame hard consonants that sounds harsh and clipping after applying compression. I used an Waves emulation of 1176 even though that I have got the UAD version also. I am very happy with my vocal not disappearing like before when the beat comes in. Gives a consistent voice this one with the right settings. But the T and some S came up also. Will appreciate it if someone suggested a technique, a plugin or some tutorial link.

Ok so great video as always! SUPER nerdy question. I know the 1176 attack is less than 1ms, evan at its slowest, but its doesnt sound like it.Sounds more like 10-20ms at its slowest. As it is a feed back compressor there seems that there is 'something' delaying the signal in the detector circuit. What do you think, is there a way to measure it?

The best trick with the Pro VLA II (as a tracking compressor) is to unlink and then daisy-chain the two channels - that way you can set the first channel fast to grab the peaks and then the second channel slow to act as a poor man's LA-2A. A two stage fast/slow compressor setup in a single box.

No. And it wouldn't make very much sense, as you wouldn't get the same output level. You can, however, create a midi-loop and use the input knob as midi value trigger, reverse the polarity of that trigger and use that trigger to then control the output knob. Or just automate it.

Do you use an preamp before the hardware 1176? I am asking because i have an wa-76 and when i use it on my mixes, i always need to crank the input till the MAX to get even 3db gain reduction. Adding a preamp before it helps tremendously but it feels kinda wrong tbh

Actually, the attack and release time act in a different way on the 1176 ... All the way left (1) is the quickest attack and (7) the slowest. Didn't you read the manual ? lol This compressor is the only one built like that, Don't know why but now y'all know 🙌🏽 Besides, your video is on point 👌🏽

Sorry fella, but this is some fake news over here. Quote from 1176 Manual listed on Universal Audio Website: “The attack time is fastest when the Attack knob is in its fully clockwise position, and is slowest when it is in its fully counter-clockwise position. When a fast attack time is selected, gain reduction kicks in almost immediately and catches transient signals of very brief duration, reducing their level and thus "softening" the sound.”

You failed to mention that you can use combinations of the ratio buttons - not just single or "all in" (all-in was never officially supported in hardware BTW!) so if you depress the 12 and 4 buttons, you get 16:1 for example. This was the case with hardware 1176s as well. You also didn't mention that your Stam 1176 has a tube output stage so it's not a 1176 clone as such.

  • @mixdownonline

    @mixdownonline

Actually, the combination of 4:1 and 20:1 will activate All Buttons, which btw, is in the 1176LN Hardware manual. For the other combinations, I actually don't know, to be honest. ,For this video, I kept it to the important things to understand enough about the 1176 to be able to work with. Now, the different features that the Stam 76D+ is not important for this video, I already made a dedicated video on the Stam 76D+, and this video is not about clone vs original, or plugin vs hardware, that will be for another time :-)

There is simply no OL influencer backing whatsoever surrounding this product and it's a shame because I own a LAX COMP. It sounds excellent. It's 100% analog.
