WOW James, I've just started photography and although I'm initially looking at a wildlife niche, one of your videos caught my eye and OMG, the in-depth incredible detail that your mind flows through of so many areas to think of when composing really is outstanding. When I bought my Canon R10 a month ago, my first thoughts were what do I photograph and now you've opened up a whole new world of fascination, regardless of what niche we step into, because so much thinking and picturing of how creative we let our minds loose on, really is endless. So thankyou millions for sharing your incredible thought process. Obviously i have subscribed

I liked the second shot quite a lot. That is the one you were not sure of. It was may favorite of the three. I wondered how you felt about it after living with it for awhile. I often find for me, after a week or so of going back to it, I either love it or I decide there wasn't really anything there after all.

I actually agree - its my fav of the 3 too. Great minds think alike 👍

As always just perfect. Prizing gems from the chaos. The final image was my favourite because it really shone out with those trunks behind it almost looking like large birches in the background. We're you tempted to take a chainsaw to the obstructive tree top left corner lol. Joke. You couldn't move further left without introducing sky could you. Thats why you are excellent to watch. You are happy to compromise and still build a composition around a focal point where many would give up. Thank you for sharing your knowledge James.

Really appreciate the seminar on how you approach capturing the best image. Do you ever photo very much smaller aspects of the woodlands? Did notice the new upgraded Nikon Z7 does now have a screen without all the data like you wanted.👍👍👍

Cheers! I rarely shoot those kind of intimate shots to be honest but its definitely something I need to do more of I feel. Yes I did see that. The updated Z7 looks nice. Not enough for me to update but very nice for anyone moving to the Z system 👍

Cheers Trevor! I shoot with 95mm Kase filters, so yes I have step up adapter rings for each of those lenses (82mm and 72mm from memory)

Compelling post, James! You’ve become a true woodland denizen, sensitive to smallest environmental changes. (You becoming a gnome 😁?🧙‍♂️). Fine choice of music, too. Insightful commentary. Diagonals generally evoke tension, contrary to overall peaceful woodland. Final image works best, where yellow tree’s “personality” shines. Cheers!

Lovely images James, I particularly liked the second image, just a superb composition, taken with your Professional hat on, I was watching an old video of yours on the Isle of Skye over the weekend, just a few days after you got married, I was interested as to what you were saying try taking some different images than the standard old shots we've been taking for years, I'm off to Skye this weekend for two weeks, so I will try to take your advice and go for something I have not taken before, if the rain stops, fingers crossed, regards.

Thanks Colin! Very envious of you visiting Skye! I've been stuck on the Isle of Man all year and I don't think I'll be leaving any time soon. Would love some time in Scotland. Best of luck with your visit - getting of the beaten track will almost certainly yield images that are more satisfying 🙂

Great shots James. A note about stacking, look into Zerene Stacking. It has a feature in retouching that allows you to take elements from any of the individual photos and put them into final image. Great for moving leaves shot to shot.

One exposure sans CPL just for the ferns and opened up so that everything from 3 meters on goes blurry may help the stack.

I tried editing the image with a shallow DOF but it didn't really work - the foreground on its own wasn't strong enough to hold the image together. Thanks for the feedback James 🙂

I've give up with woodlands, 4 and a half mile walk round a forest today and still didn't get a shot 🤣

Thanks Peter - I miss a few little things like clean LCD live view and depth of field preview functionality. But they are only little things. For landscape photography the Z7 is as good as the D850 and in terms of lenses, its actually better.

@@JamesBrewphoto Hi James, what is your take on weatherproof camera.. i have canon 77d and i am not a PRO. I moved to UK recently and i doubt whether weatherproof camera would help me as this country is wet most of the year... Should i upgrade to 80d/90d only for getting weatherproof feature? Also, will i have to upgrade my lenses to make 'weatherproofing' really work, thanks.

To me, woodland photography is extremely difficult to get a good composition out of it. You'v found three of them! Hmmm... the last one is the best for me.
