*Your title says the most important thing, you do it for everything!* It's definitely a lot of work and why some people are not cheap to hire. *This is what was once called "mousing it when I was still a novice.* I have only just started using automation in the last 2 years to any significant depths. *It's used in both individual tracks for your mixing, as well as in mastering.* For mastering, if you have a good AI mastering app, you can also learn to do it manually for yourself to a more pleasing end product by reviewing what the AI mastering automated for the final mix.

talk about perfect timing, just managed to escape the 8 -bar-loop hell by figuring out automation by ear and build structure that way. actually hyper focused so hard on the sketch I did cause I had so much fun with it, that I didn’t notice it had been 14 hours lol

Automation is an opportunity to present your music in the best way possible. The drama you can create with dynamic changes makes music come alive and tell a story. Musicians in a band would do it naturally. As an electronic producer, it takes a more conscious effort. It is worth it.

I've been mixing for 2 years now. Same songs on and on. And automation is definitely the key to get your songs 1 league up. The last league might be mastering, I don't know. Oh, and 1 more thing: Automation is hard work.

The only tweak I would add for the section at 17:50 is to do volume automations using some type of gain plugin on the channel strip, this way it always allows for mix volume changes at a later stage without the pesky little problem of the automation being read from the channel fader & constantly resetting back as per the automation if it were to be applied to the channel fader.

4:18 if i'm not mistaken, you can also just hit play to capture any MIDI controlled automation movements while W is enabled

you can! it just depends if you want the automation lane captured as another instance of MIDI vs. just being in the automation lane that collapses

Please disregard prior question. In Logic you use the latch button to initiate animation.

Nice video! I would like to know if it's better to use automation of volume faders at the production stage, or, better to leave this for the mixing stage?

Hi Austin.. I have a question about your gear.. Why did you decide to buy a Heritage Audio HA81A instead of the classic Neve 1073 SPX ? Do you prefer the Heritage to the Neve ? Or because of the price ? I saw that the Neve costs 1800$ instead the Heritage 1300$ approximately.. It is not much different in price.. Thank you very much!

AMS Neve are overpriced. The 81A gives you a 1073 preamp with a 1081 equalizer. So you get the best of both worlds in terms of flexibility and class A sound quality. BAE make the best clones (even better than AMS Neve themselves) but Heritage obviously has them beat on the price.

Surprised it wasn't covered in the video as much but you can also mouse/click in automation. For example instead of using a midi controller to increase the cutoff filter you can just click in the min/max value you want and then adjust the line between the two points to be linear or more logarithmic. Hope that make sense as I find that easier and faster to do than how it was shown in the video using a midi controller where you end up with lots of control points that are not as smooth as clicking in your desired min/max points and then adjusting the line between the two points.
