Great video.... Brings back great memories as I was fortunate to take lessons from George in 1981 at the National Golf Club in Toronto. We also played a round together as well. It's a great track...it has hosted the Canadian Open. He just had 6 students...We hit balls from 8:30am to 4:30pm with a break for lunch. He had a great saying....You don't play golf to relax but rather you must relax to play golf...tension free. He was not just a true ball striker but also a very kind and soft spoke gentleman. He would say...like physics, " If you control the centre you can control the movement." Never do anything at the expense of balance...also the head had no real function in the swing it simple went where the body took it. His accuracy was off the chart...He ask me to pick a target with my wedge, I said the tree...he said no pick a branch on the tree. As they say pure raw talent never disappoints, it simply amazes every time. 👍💯🍷❤️🇨🇦

I was lucky enough to get to watch George play many times throughout the '70's at my hometown tour event in New Orleans. Ben Hogan once said that George had the "greatest swing of his generation of golfers". I never got to watch Mr. Hogan play but my first instructor watched both and told me that there were many parallels between their techniques. An incredible combination of rhythm and mechanics. You really had to witness this in person to believe it! By the way, he was also a proper gent and very approachable. Aside from his book, he also produced a very nice instructional video that was filmed at Mid-Ocean in Bermuda. I believe it's still on KZread for those that want to check it out. He left us way too soon.

I grew up in Toronto and went to school with George's youngest son Dean. I wasn't a golfer at the time, so didn't know about George, but it was known that Dean's father was the 'famous' golfer George Knudson - who had already passed when we were at school. There are important swings of past greats that are worth studying because, through trial and error, they figured out the sequencing that generated both power and accuracy - George's swing is easily Top 10 - he could win on tour without being able to putt his swing was that good.

@@CraigHansonGolf Craig, if you haven't done it already, I think a great analysis to do is Nick Price's swing. I was unbelievably fortunate to have played eighteen holes with Nick at a private corporate event, many years ago. I can still hear the sound of the ball coming off his club - it was barbaric and savage the way he attacked the ball - the sound was incredible. I never saw any shot that day that wasn't center fairway or directly at the flag. Nick also taught me about grain, how to read it, and how much it matters on certain putts - just a great guy.

I am tinkering with this Hogan type swing -- because it makes perfect sense to me now. It allows me to turn open more (a larger margin for error) coming down into the ball and coming trough. I can have my left arm across my chest more and still get a good swing off. This requires I drop my head down in the downswing. It also requires I keep my right arm bent throughout the entirety of the downswing. I don't seem to lose any power or distance doing this -- thought I would.

I asked a friend, who had been on tour with George, what was the best shot he ever saw on tour. Without hesitation he said George Knudson. George had hit his Drive into a divot. George took a look, a last drag on a cigarette, tossed it to the ground, pulled an iron, and hit it stiff to the pin.

I believe he played quite a few practice/friendly rounds with the fellow Canadian & great ball striker Moe Norman. Curiously Moe's single plane swing was called 'natural golf'. I am amazed at how he is able to drop the head through transition. As a senior and I'm sure like many I struggle to 'squat' at that point and not straighten up.

Yeah club players stand up because they lose angles their hand and wrist motion isn’t dynamic enough. The standing up is a unconscious move to prevent them hitting it fat as they often lose angles or come in steep. Top players lower down 3 inches on average. Because they shorten the radius of their swings by holding angles and creating shaft lean. WorldClassGolf.com has 1300 videos There’s a series called - The Move of Millions Here advanced hand and wrist drills and exercises are shown to reprogram muscle memory. Then any golfer can lower through the ball.

in his book George Knudson explained that his stance with right foot back from target line(some would say, closed) and knee bend was due to his right leg being 5/8 inch shorter than his left leg. ie personal adjustment for his unique physique. Both Knudson and Ben Hogan, positioned themselves with hips open relative to their foot stance. This set up pivots: at address, hip/femur angle acute for left side, at top of BS hip /femur acute angle, for right side pivot. Lateral move from top of BS, allows acute angle to shift to left side for the final pivot. Thanks to Gerry Hogan.

I think it depends a lot on our shoulder joints. I mean I can’t externally rotate rotate my shoulders well so I struggle with the sane thing. The finish doesn’t have to be low. Some people can’t exit low. If you have the type of swing where the body is really opened at impact and you can really externally rotate your shoulders the swing will finish low. Justin Rose definitely doesn’t finish low ..what a ball striker he’s been

@@CraigHansonGolf Gerry Hogan, analyzed Ben Hogan, Lee Trevino, Jack Nicklaus, Nick Faldo, Greg Norman, .... in their prime "This is the reason for the golfers "squat"-- the name given to the familiar crouchthat top golfers drop into as they swing the club. The weight of the golfers arms and club as they swing around in front of the body, plus the centrifugal force they exert, compel the golfer to stick out his rump further to balance them, which naturally lowers his height...... For example, Jack Nicklaus at impact, ... head is only 158 cm (5ft 2 inches) above the ground. This crouch during the golf swing is not deliberate of course. Rather, it is an involuntary movement to maintain balance...." The Hogan Manual of Human Performance: GOLF, 1992, Gerry Hogan Chapter : Balance, page 32, 33

@@dtgps I had this movement in my swing naturally when I was then coaches told me it was a mistake. So i trained it out of my game. Maintain your spine angle they said Keep your spine angle .. i started to flip and block shots. I have been able to get the move back into my swing years later after hundreds of thousands of balls. Here’s more reasons why it helps golfers.. • shaft lean actually shortens the radius of the swing so we have to lower down to help us reach the ball. • leg work. The right hip is 7 cm lower at impact on average compared to the address position. This helps the left hip get 10-15 degrees higher at impact. • Lateral shift.. when we lower down and load into the left leg it bends more. It holds its structure when it’s bent it moves lateral. When we stay tall it straightens and we have to throw the the arms. • A high right hip gets us stuck.

No offense but talking about all these positions etc. is not what George taught. Get his book Natural Golf, the way he teaches is incredible. Teaching positions and a bunch of technical things is anti-Knudson. I read his book a month ago and it's amazing. I feel for the first time in 30 years I know what to do and how to correct things if they go wrong. I was shooting over 100 most rounds to 77 my last with 73% fairways hit! I used to spray the ball all over the map. I cannot believe it. His book is out of print but well worth finding a used copy. It's hands down the best instruction book I've read by miles.

It would be great to know players loft lie and length. Lie angle is super important IMO. Just gong from 1 degree upright to 1 degree flat is a big big difference in ball flight without making adjustments. Just a 2 degrees difference could have a player hitting draws to now hitting fades. And then feel like hitting a huge draw is just a straight ball. Crazy stuff and one can really get down the rabbit hole experimenting with different lie angles. Especially if you are 0.0 swinger.
