The M2 Bradley Infantry Fighting Vehicle - Overview + Opinions

Ғылым және технология

Time to discuss the M2 Bradley Infantry Fighting Vehicle. In 1972 the US Army requested design proposal to meet a requirement for a mechanized infantry fighting vehicle. It was developed in response to the Soviet BMP-1 IFV. A complex series of design submissions and changing specifications followed until a Fighting Vehicle System appeared, comprising two vehicles, an IFV which became M2 Bradley and Cavalry Fighting Vehicle which became the M3. It was designed as a better armored replacement for the ageing M113 armored personnel carrier. Deliveries of the M2 Bradley commenced in 1981 and have continued since with totals over 4 600 vehicles. Some 400 M2 IFV's have been exported to Saudi Arabia.
The M2 Bradley infantry fighting vehicle has a welded aluminum armor hull. Front arc has a spaced laminated aluminum and steel armor. Initial production variant provided protection against 14.5-mm armor-piercing rounds. Front arc of the latest models provide protection against 30-mm armor-piercing rounds. Also vehicle is fitted with explosive reactive armor and withstands hits from RPG rounds. Bottom was reinforced with steel plates for improved protection against mines. The M2 Bradley is also fitted with NBC protection system.
Vehicle is armed with a two-man turret, fitted with a 25-mm dual-fed Bushmaster chain gun. At the time of its introduction the Bradley was the first IFV with a fully-stabilized main gun. The gun fires armor-piercing and HE-FRAG rounds. Also there is a TOW anti-tank guided missile launcher loaded with two missiles. There is also a coaxial 7.62-mm machine gun.
The Bradley IFV accommodates 6 dismounts. Infantrymen enter and leave the vehicle via the rear doors. Early models had firing ports with dedicated 5.56-mm assault rifles attached. These were later removed to avoid compromising the side armor protection.
Original version of this infantry fighting vehicle was powered by a Cummins VTA-903T turbocharged diesel engine, developing 500 hp. Engine is located at the front. It is mated to an automatic transmission. The M2 is amphibious with the use of swim barrier. Swimming capabilities can be improved by the erection of inflatable buoyancy tanks. On water the Bradely is propelled by spinning its tracks. This IFV is air-transportable
Throughout its service life the M2 Bradley IFV series has been the subject of numerous enhancements to improve combat capabilities and survivability for the vehicle and occupants. There were three main improvement programmes - the M2A1, M2A2 and M2A3.
Hope you enjoy!

I may be getting old but 35 years ago when I was involved with Armor I loved the Bradley so long as they didn't give the false impression that it was a main battle tank. It was an extraordinary Infantry Fighting Vehicle, not meant to act as counterforce to a T72! It wasn't armored enough to take on MBTs even though it did a few times, successfully thank God. I prefer tracks over rubber tires but the Stryker thinks otherwise. Bradley over Stryker in this man's book, even though Both are great vehicles. I'm now too old but my 3 grandsons aren't...

Yes. It certainly did. I don't think most of the general public actually understand anything resembling remotely modern warfare or force multipliers. All you have to do is watch the insanely out of date infomercial that was included in this and extrapolate even a tiny bit to kinda get how integrated a weapon system the Bradley/A1/Apache/A10 combo is. I remember the targeting assistance the Bradleys provided to A1's were producing kills from miles away WAY back in the 90's now fast forward a few decades.

the bradley isn't a bad system, but for modern wars we seem to be seeing far more low intensity conflicts. That being said, I remember my uncle telling me a story about how a friend of his was a bradley driver, and the bradley was hit by several RPG's. luckily the ERA stopped the RPG's, and my uncle's friend came home safe. On his next deployment an IED blew the bottom hull to pieces because it wasn't designed with a V-hull, where as the overall less armored LAV-25 could and does survive hits from IED's of similar size. The commander, two soldiers in the back of the Bradley, and my uncle's friend were killed by the blast. The bradley is a weapon for a past war, despite its merits. The US seems to be lagging behind in APC/IFV development, in favor of MRAP's due to that problem. The problem with MRAP's, is they lack firepower of a 25mm cannon and TOW missiles, instead getting .50 cal machineguns most commonly. The struggle continues.

Build whatever you may, you're going to find yourself preparing for the last war partly because you are and partly because the enemy will look at what you've now got and deploy cheap weapons designed to exploit the weaknesses you had to accept to get the advantages you wanted. New beats old because it is designed to do precisely that.

согласен, особенно впечатлили 2 факта :1) Bradley had already lost the BMP-3 once. We are talking about the UAE tender for the supply of infantry fighting vehicles, in which Russian equipment won. According to various sources, the Arabs now have up to 650 "triples". As of 2022, the BMP-3 operators are at least 13 countries, in which more than a thousand Russian machines serve. 2 )During Operation Desert Storm - even more Iraqi equipment was destroyed than Abrams tanks. Losses from enemy fire were minimal - only three vehicles. But 17 Bradleys were destroyed by friendly fire. After that, the M2 and M3 were in combat only during the next invasion of Iraq. so, it is more correct to compare it with the "BMP -3" with a 100mm cannon that will punch the "Bradley" into any projection, and not with what was released in the USSR in the 50-60s. M2A2/M3A2 - modification with improved protection. The armor provides protection from 30mm shells "in a circle", it is possible to install dynamic protection. I may have heard you wrong but the infantry's Bradley's have all been upgraded to the a3 variant not being as are the engineers brads. Also most of the components to the busk kits are installed. They are in the process of upgrading the 25mm to either a 30 or 40mm. They have improved the tow as well, they have a wireless version in production. A few nice things for the Brad is the 919 apfsdst (depleted uranium) ammo. I destroyed a t72 in Baghdad 2003 with ease with it, granted not sure it will kill more modern tanks. Also the port firing weapon or m231 is a beast. Fires over 1200 RDS a min. Back when I was an 11m and we actually trained to fight large scale warfare we would take them into the trenches when we cleared. Really got to hold on to it.

We were also supposed to have the barrels checked but they never did that either. It's not the round itself but the dust from them being fired or hitting their target. You do know there's a rear hatch that can be used instead of the ramp, right? It works quite well. The M-2 easily handled the BMP-2. At 73Easting 50cal would go through BMP's like they were made of plastic. Yes, M-2 had some lessons to learn. You don't think Russia learned there were issues with the BMP?

There is a door inside the ramp it swings open. We used to practice with it so we could dismount without dropping the ramp. To lower and raise the ramp caused distinct motor noise that would alert the enemy that we were dismounting or mounting. Depending on the orientation of the turret you could also use the troop missle load hatch to get out if you had to.

The scenery is unique: the once common California Oak woodland Savanna which is quite rare today but thanks to those very very large bases there is still some to see. Ligget alone is 170,000 acres. I used to hunt it while in College, as the military, thru DFG allowed for this on certain days with certain limitations.

We now have half of the M113 variants still in service and they are 60 years old. Their is a raised version of the Bradley that is being considered to replace them but it's 35 years to late.

I just feel the 25mm dont do the job anymore. The 40mm guns can deploy effective new affordable ammunition types and can engange at longer ranges. The 40' packs a good punch and can dig holes in most armor. Its not a anti-tank weapon but rly most heavy armor counter TOW but the TOW/SPIKE option can be combined with the 40 to make a devastating combination

The bigger it gets the less ammo you can bring. As an example everything up to 35mm is belt-fed, so it can be used in a remote controlled unmanned turret. 40mm upwards however needs a manned turret (not CTAS though). CV-9040 needs a loader that loads 25-shot-magazines at the autocannon. IFVs are mainly to counter Infantry these days. Some IFV as the T-15 or the Puma already are that good protected to widhstand IFV main armaments. IFVs get more tank-like so it will need ATGM in the future to counter these vehicles (or atleast have a chance to counter them, a tiny)

  • @cannack

25mm still has punch, when it comes to heavy ifvs and modern MBTs not even 40mm could kill them, thats why even the swedish CV90 has ATGMs to assist the bofors 40mm in the3 anti tank role

You ever heard the story of how the M2 was developed?. If it had been released as already "pre-approved", it would have been a cheap piece of junk that was more of a deathtrap to the men inside than it was a worry for the enemy. If it wasnt for the actions of a few whistleblowers, a lot of men would have died because of it.

There’s books and movie called The Pentagon Wars. While the film was more focused on satire and humor they both talked about how corrupt and unconcerned the top brass were on the Bradley as a fighting vehicle and were more interested in pushing it though to feed the Military Industrial Complex. I am no pacifist, nor do I hate the Bradley as it is now, but the way it was originally designed would’ve made it a far inferior vehicle.

I was a Bradley mechanic for 15 years. I got to know my operators pretty well and they were all crazy bastards, but in the kind of way that if you are the enemy then you wouldn't want to ever see them coming. Our Bradley crews often got more kills than the tankers. The Bradley I know saved allot of lives during Iraq. And I was there to support a unit from the 101st ABN when they got theater pre-po Brad's to do missions in, instead of Hummers. Out of the 13 Brad's they got 11 were coded out for IED damage. One loss of life over that 8 months I was with them. If they had kept using the Hummers like so many other units there would have been allot of funerals. The Bradley was easy to maintain if you were a parts hoarder like I was and had the 101st division making my guys priority for parts. Lol word got out about my 2 million + parts in my milvan and I had BAE FSRs show up looking for parts. The guys face hit the dirt when he saw my parts selection. I was given a directive by the Col to have everything I would need to get his tracks back up and running in 24 hrs. So I just made a dream list of parts. I figured it would be shaved down by at least 1/2. They didn't bat an eye and ordered everything and then asked if I needed more. So I threw in some more spare track. Unless we had a hull piercing or something that constituted a reason to code a Brad out. We were able to get that 24 hours turn around on those Bradley's. I miss my job back in the Army. I miss being able to support my guys and just doing something I truly felt good at. I have never had that feeling as a veteran.

It's based off the real life story into the early designed Bradley botched design with cut corners to save on production cost. Happy to say they of course got that all squared out. Still goes to show ya those in power won't skimp on the chance to make a fast buck, and this was by no means a fast development. They’ve also developed a Depleted Uranium (DU) Round for the 25 MM Chain Gun. Reportedly - it can penetrate the side armor of many modern tanks.

The best of the best. No other PC is any real comparison. INFANTRY!!!! The TOW is the dealbreaker, as it increases the survival of mechanized infantry far better. The vehicle is fast, maneuverable, and has the best gunnery system found in IFV's. I still would NOT want to be inside it when it gets hit by something, but it's still a transport. The money maker is the dismounts. Finally, it has what can be argued as elbow space for the dismounts compared to other APCs and IFVs.

"The TOW is the dealbreaker, as it increases the survival of mechanized infantry far better" why not add wings to it and equip it nuclear missile launch pads too and build a fortress on top of that turret and cover it in stealth materials and add 2 miniguns on the side and... to increase the survival of infantry far better? *sarcasm off* a military vehicle has certain job to do and bradley itself seem to not really know what it's designed for. we are FAR from developing technologies to build ultra-multifunctional vehicles. that's why still today military equipment is always specialized. bradley is not specialized. that's what i don't like about it

Thanks for this program. I was a Mech Infantry Platoon Leader in the 1990s. We did not have the firing ports on the side of our Bradley. We still had the M231 Port Firing weapons. Those are the 5.56 MM weapons fired from the inside. They are a full auto only variant of the M16. They were too dangerous to use safely as they have a very high cyclic rate of fire. We struggled to fit six soldiers in the back of our Bradleys.

I want to correct you on a critical piece of information regarding the M2 Bradley. the modern bradley is correct as you say it. however it was in blueprint and RND from the 1950's until the 1960 or 70's where it had finally been built with Military grade alluminum as a prototype. Mind you the 'bradley fighting vehilcle' of today is entirely different to the original blueprints of the vehicle during the 50's. to the point that it's an entirely different vehicle now. however, it's beginning was in world war 2 as a napkin vehicle (till the 50's) and then became viable after an incredible 14 billion dollars during it's developmental lifetime (mind you this was in the 50's to 70's when that amount of money would be 143 billion today ish intotal.) think about that. there was an HBO movie called Pentagon wars with cary elwes that (mind you is a hollywood interperetation and some events aren't historically accurate). even so, i wanted to bring this to your attention as it is of importance to understanding the full history of the bradley fighting vehicles development

Well, Pentagon Wars is great movie, but it even vastly differs from original book and way how Bradley thread (roughly 1/3rd of the book) was described. It had to skip on many complexities and meanderings of Bradley development and testing.

The Bradley was actually under budget additionally it was always meant to be an IFV, the book pentagon wars was written by an axe grinding idiot angry that the Airforce didn’t want to use ww2 as a reference for how future jet fighters should be made and who treated it like some scandal when his demanded tests to test the Bradley’s armor against stuff it was never meant to withstand and which would waste millions of dollars blowing up perfectly good Bradley’s and than when his tests did go through he freaked out and exaggerated and distorted what happened in the tests to make the others look bad, he was than reassigned after which he through a hissy fit and resigned.
