The M16A4; The 3 Round Burst Menace
We want to give tons of love to International Milspec Co for the help in putting this together. The M16A4 with burst fire is such an interesting design. In many ways forward thinking and in so many more it's a bad design. Despite this it has served with the US Armed Forces for a long time. In today's video we delve deep into the M16A4

I built an M16A4 using a free float rail. I took the FSB off, slid the free float barrel nut on, slid the 12" free float quad rail on, mounted the quad rail to the barrel nut, installed the FSB back on with the gas tube and front handguard cap already attached. The front handguard cap for the drop in handguards fits inside the free float rail with about 1/16" clearance all around. It looks identical to the classic M16A4, unless you stop and look at the rail real close, you will see that the rail is not touching the front handguard cap. I did my own trigger job on it, installed reduced power springs and it pulls at 4 lbs, with a smooth as glass action, and crisp break. I'm running an older Bushnell 4 x 18 scope on it. I get 1" MOA at 100 yards, with cheap steel case ammo. It is a great shooter

I was issued the good ol A4 in Infantry OSUT in 2005. She’ll always hold a special place in my heart.
I was an Armorer in the Corps. One unique problem, only one time, the hammer pin walked out on a Marine at the range. That blew my mind because I've never seen that before or after that. On another note, the sling swivel being riveted to the barrel is another weak point of the rifle. Having the sling attached to the barrel makes another pressure point on it, causing it to flex when used. Other than the short comings of the rifle, its reliability that I've seen was great, besides that one time malfunction previously stated. If the Marine Corps would've done some modifications to the rifle, like free floating the barrel and maybe changing the barrel profile, it would've been superb. I believe thatere was a small batch that had those mods, but i can't remember the name of the rifle, maybe SMR or SAR, something aolng those lines. Just a handful of rifles but not Corps wide.

Before dismissing bayonets, there’s a few things to consider. 1. War is chaos, ammo is limited and things don’t always go as planned. 2. Whatever your plan is, the enemy gets a vote (includes opting for human wave tactics) 3. They used to say putting guns on fighter jets (like the F4) with “modern” missiles was “obsolete” since they’d just shoot them down before they got close enough for guns. History shows this was a mistake. 4. Bayonets still have an intimidation value which is useful for crowd control. There are accounts from veterans noting local populace’s tendency to become more subdued when the bayonets were out.

@@TheInfantry98 lol I don’t entirely disagree. Bayonets used to be indispensable but now their importance has diminished significantly. WWI and the machine gun proved you can’t just mindlessly throw masses of infantry in a bayonet charge and overrun positions like in olden days. Bayonets may not be as integral as it used to be but that doesn’t mean they’re entirely useless in modern conflicts either. From Vietnam to Iraq there have been instances where bayonets proved useful. The Marine Corps still trains with bayonets. It’s understood that it’s a tool who’s deployment should be left to a very limited set of circumstances but nonetheless, you want to have them and know how to use them should those unlikely circumstances arise. Perhaps an enemy, knowing Americans reliance on CAS and artillery would favor the tactic of getting so close that Americans can’t use said CAS/artillery support.

Six years of hating the M4's trash burst system. This brings back sour memories.
I was an armored in the Marine Corps. I worked on A1s through A4s. I concur with your assessments you presented. The 3 rd burst was a joke. The cams were getting chewed up and mangled. We even had one go full auto because the cam was shot. The amount of money spent on R&D to supposedly save money on ammo was due to how it was fired in Nam. We trained to fire burst, usually 4-6 rds much like we did with M60s. The accuracy with the A4 was due mainly by beefing up the metal in the upper and lower receivers. R or L shooting I personally only had to adjust the sights 1-2 clicks at specified range. I personally believed in the A4 as a trust worthy weapon. I do support bayonet training and use. Lastly, like you, they should have made the barrel whole on the exterior.

Hey mike, The gvt profile barrel is explained in the 87’ « Black Rifle » Book. They kept it the same diameter under the handguard in order to be able to mount the shitload of M203 already in inventory and not having to rebuild all of them. Plus they needed to help cool of the barrel quicker due to the precision problem of the A1 warping due to Heat. So they added material to the end of the barrel in order to act has an « heat sink » that pulled heat outside off the handguard wich had a tendancy to maintain the heat inside. Love your videos, greetings from France
between deployments in 2003-2004, My USMC Unit was doing testing within our units to decide what to transition to from the M16A2. Pretty much everyone that actually in the role of a Rifleman, wanted the M4A1 carbine rather than the M16A4, as the M4 was lighter and handier, and the adjustable stock made it easier to fire for shorter Marines (like me) especially when we don the body armour. Command settled on the M16A4, to retain the 'spirit' of the "every Marine a Rifleman" idea, and because it would LOOK better while doing drill and ceremonies when in the rear.

In 89, us Army guys trained once with the three shot burst function. We were taught to use the front strap to control the recoil. You made a sort of loop and then wrapped your hand in the loop. I thought it was dumb because you could hold the hand guard plenty tight.
I'm 5'7" and when I was in the army that A2 stock killed me, especially with armor. Now that I'm out I wanted to relive the wonderful M16A4, but this time I put an A1 stock on my FN clone. This makes it so much more pleasant for us vertically challenged people lol

My great uncle was a 60mm mortarman in the 7th Infantry Division in Korea. Had some real gnarly war stories. The Korean War got downright medieval sometimes. Chinese human wave attacks by dudes high as phuck on opium/ blackout drunk, just bum rushing the frontline to overwhelm the defenses. And after 1950 much of the frontline solidified into World War I-like trench warfare. Hand to hand combat happened for sure.

Please do videos on the following: -Shotgun Mud test -Review the ARAK-21 -Which is better the PKM or the M240B? -Possible Sand Tests for the future? -How good are mini shotgun shells vs 2 3/4? -Invite all the GunTubers you can to Idaho with a rifle that they would take into combat and have them run drills and compete with each other to see which rifle set up would work best.

As I understand, the government profile barrel was born from a misunderstanding. They put test rods down the barrel to check if it was straight and they had a bunch getting stuck at the gas port. They took this to mean the barrel was bending there and so, thickened the barrel. But in reality, the barrels weren't bent, the gas ports had burrs on them. And also, thickening the barrel past the gas port wouldn't even prevent it from bending at the gas port, so it was a mistake stacked on top of another mistake.

FWIU, it was jacket material building up on said burrs over time. A bore scope would've let them know that, but electric bore scopes were in their infancy and very expensive back then.

Great message at the end.
Wow. I literally started my retro build a week ago and now this. The vibe is real, just waiting on my carry handle.
In desert storm we had, what we called, m16a1 and a half. It was an a1 with full auto setting, but someone got the bright idea, to put a2 furniture on the a1 to make it “look” like an a2. So the enemy would think we all had the newest and greatest, which we didn’t, I liked it, being 6’4, the longer stock fit me better. The funny thing we ran into, the units that had the a2, wanted our rifles, because we still had full auto. They hated the a2 burst feature.
I was a Marine and I carried the A4 and my not-a-carry-handle lived in my ruck. Not one Marine ever told me that I “had” to have it attached to my rifle. The RCO was such a reliable sight and it was an absolute tank, that there was never any concern about needing backup irons readily accessible.
That's no joke. I'm 5'3", I used the A2 in basic, and yes, I had trouble maneuvering and even firing that rifle because of it's length. If you're shorter and as a result have shorter arms than most, even holding and firing it comfortably is a real problem they hadn't considered back then. I went with a carbine AR for exactly that reason. Something I could easily build around myself and make far more comfortable to fire than most other rifles.
Fantastic, really enjoyed, thanks
We had the A2 during my time with the Marine Corps. The 3 round burst was so controllable, as easy as shooting it semi. The A4 is the ultimate version for a full size AR-15 for accuracy, longer effective range, and controllable suppressive fire.

There is also a company making an el cheapo rail that has the same effect. They use an aluminum clamp around the triangle. First time I tried it I was amazed at how rigid it made the rifle compared to the plastic split handguards. The rail was like $25 compared to KA.

@@Danstheman1357 No it was actually an American company not an import, although I'm sure there are Chinese copies of this system now because it's surprisingly nice. The company IIRC wasn't really a gun company, they were just machining random products. I found it by google search just look for the picture where the front of the rail has this round circular thing that lays flush with the triangle.
When we finally got our hands on the M4A1 before we deployed in 2017, I was so freaking happy because the claw that interacts with the cam in the 3 round burst trigger sheered off in my 3rd M4 causing the trigger to not reset after the third round that was fired while in the semiautomatic selector position. I either had to charge the rifle or cycle the selector until the trigger reset. It was a nightmare. lol
Aside the burst being weird, but that rifle is "vibe" i think. It just looks right. The Monty rush at the start is pure gold too.
Best Dad advice EVER. As a Dad and grandpa. Enjoy every minute of their time you can get ! You will never regret it!!!!!!!!
Took me right back to Paris island, summer of '84. We had A2's with 3 rd burst. Awful but I still loved my first M16. Thanks
I just fired a 3 round burst I absolutely loved burst when I carried a A2 in the 90s. I got to use the proto M4 for an onsite BDA project over the border on Southern Watch. That was just a short A2 upper on a A1 lower. So, I got to directly compare auto and burst. There is absolutely no problem with the shot sequencing. You're going to be rock n rollin when you're in burst, it doesn't matter one iota if your first pull is 2 rounds or 3.
An M16 with it's 20" barrel is no longer than an M4 with a suppressor, and SHORTER than an M7 or an M27 with a suppressor. And it enjoys full 20" barrel ballistics. I was in a mechanized infantry unit, and was issued an M16A1 and later an A2. I found no problems whatsoever using either in around or from our armored vehicles.

The problem with the M16A4 isn't the 20" barrel, it's the 12" KAC rail and optic. Those things are 9 pounds unloaded without optic if you believe the FM. I think most people care about the weight of an M4 over the 5 inches of extra barrel length.

@@tedhodge4830 The crazy thing is that the new M7 will be even heavier with all the crap that they'll be hanging off of it. And the combat loadout will be 100rds. Crazy.
What you found out with burst is what I learned in Marine bootcamp. Our CO told us this before we tried our rifles on burst the first time. “ You will most likely never use burst. It fires so fast that with a proper hold you’ll end up putting three rounds into the same target at less than 200 yards. You will only use burst when shooting at distant targets where by then the spread will be big enough to give you a better chance of a hit. Otherwise, you will never use burst.” So we went to a foxhole, aimed at man size targets at 100 yards, and put the rounds into a fist sized group.

I never shot burst in boot camp. There was a single unimportant event in MCT where we loaded a mag with like 9 or 12 rounds and let a couple bursts loose. All I remember is the stupid spring twang and my muzzle climbing way too much. All I remember about the A4 in general was banging the barrel on my left knee and the awful spring sound that is somehow louder than the muzzle rapport
@tedhodge4830
Ай бұрын
@@onseki1774 The M16 shoots rather soft though because of that long sproing. I dunno, I liked the A2.
Now I understand why people hated that burst fire in M16A2 and A4. All this time I thought that everytime it switches from semi to burst it retains the 3-round burst. One has to have a very good trigger discipline to use that AND the memory of predicting how many rounds it'll fire next, to boot. But does that discourage me from hating it? Not at all; but at least I learned how it works and how to utilize it And, a lot of A2s and A4s (alongside old A1s) in service here in Philippines are active in frontline use. The soldiers here never complained about it as far as I know and I am yet to hear one (nor does the length of the guns/barrel), which makes me confident to say that we Filipinos are that good in using burst fire. Or maybe I'm wrong, who knows. And very generous of you to show us the bayonet. I felt M16s look naked without one
I lucked out and got to qualify on an M16A4 in a US Army Armor company in 2014. Our armory door broke on range day and wouldn't open so we ended up borrowing rifles from the Battalion HHC. We ended up with a mix of M4s and M16A4s. This was the only time I got to shoot with both an M16A4 and an ACOG and the only time I hit a 300 meter target with an Army issue rifle until after I got refractive eye surgery.
Top marks for the Monty Python reference at the beginning. Friggin hilarious!

Brought back found memories!
Back in the 90s, with A2s (USMC) we RARELY used the burst feature. We always knew it was for suppression and picking up the ROF when the SAW guy was reloading, but never ever for any kind of long range shooting.
When I was in the Army in 1969/70 I trained on and carried both the XM-16E1 and the M-16A1, neither of which had the 3-round burst capability but had off, semi and auto for fire selection. With our limited 20rd detachable box magazines, that we normally didn't load beyond 18rd, I tended to be conservative with my ammo usage and so would normally fire in semi-auto mode. If I did fire on full auto, I would try to squeeze of as few shots as possible. If I was really quick on the trigger I could limit it to three rounds. With good fire discipline, I think that I would rather have the option of firing fully automatic, as wasteful of ammo as that is. If I were carrying an M-14, which I did train on but never carried, I would definitely rather have the three-round burst capability as opposed to full automatic. I was a very thin and light young man at that stage in life and the recoil of the 14 was something I really had to concentrate on in order to get decent accuracy. I was not a natural marksman, although I did qualify as a sharpshooter on the 16 in training. One of the problems in my rifle qualification on the range was the fact that my weapon did jam a few times, necessitating the breakdown and manual extraction of the jammed round, all while the popup silhouette targets were going up and down. Complaints to the range Sergeant were pointless, as I was told to quit being a baby and to just suck it up and deal with it. My dream of shooting Expert and maybe qualifying to be a designated marksman was never to be; such is life.
Love the bayonet opening! My dad was in two bayonet charges in WWII. Definitely big cajones stuff. He used to say it was one thing to kill someone 50 to 100 yards away and something quite different up close.

I've carried the Colt M4 with 3 round burst for 90%-ish of my Army Infantry carrier. For our 1st deployment to Iraq, we were issued Aimpoint red dots (that always seemed to break) then upgraded to the ACOG. I never had an issue with my Colt M4 with 3rd bursts that I can remember, other than having runaway guns when the barrels got soo hot during crazy firefight, Just pull that damn milspec trigger more than 1x and you are good to go. Lol I absolutely never had an issue with the AGOG. My next 2 deployments to Iraq, I was issued a full auto Colt M4 with choice of ACOG or EOTECH. My last deployment to Iraq, we were issued full auto Bushmaster M4s with the choice of ACOG or EOTECH. The Bushmasters were way more accurate than the Colts. I always chose the ACOG over anything else that was offered.
