As a HUGE Sci-Fi enthusiast, as a kid, I LOVED this song!! Not b/c of the depressing lyrics, but how they speculated the future as a message for humanity to pay attention. Maybe I was always an "old-soul", but this song stuck with me for many years as something to take serious note of. Anyway, I'm glad you reacted to this Zagger and Evans song. I still love it!!

Me too! I was 11 when it came out, a massive sci-fi fan and was absolutely captivated by the lyrics! Still love it! ❤️✌🏻✌🏻❤️

George Orwell's books 1984 and Animal Farm were considered cautionary fiction when we studied them in school back in the early 70's, however they seem to have become instruction manuals for today's government. Two of the most important books I ever read and studied. Thank you two. I always enjoy watching your reactions from here in TEXAS.

You’re right! Prophetic and Profound! Now they both have been banned from our education system! Wonder why? They foretell the future that they don’t want us to know, much like the threats of the former USSR in the late 1950’s! The weren’t books weren’t required reading for me, I was exempt from Senior English. I did read both while in college and reread them when my oldest son was a Senior in high school. Other suggested reading, although banned, are “The Taming of the Shrew” and “Romeo and Juliet” which are far beneath the authenticity projected by politicians! Maybe our government should consider what Bible they’re thumping as “Song of Solomon” is more telling of the union of two and with God than either of both Shakespeare’s works! Obviously they AREN’T reading their Bibles…if they even own one! Our government will bring in precisely what is spoken in this tune!!! Excellent choices!

@@jodyjackson5475 thankfully, Amazon still sells both, along with the “Complete Works of William Shakespeare” and “The Catcher in the Rye” by JD Salinger. All banned but, for now, we have access. I have all of them in hardback but I wonder when my home will be raided. Regardless, I don’t care if I’m raided, although under our Constitutional rights, specifically Amendment 14, they can’t raid without a warrant in hand. What they, so far, can’t do is erase our memories…yet! What most forget, going back to “1984” Orwell, everything we own has cameras. I was recently watching Rachel Maddow as MSNBC covered a political debate. She specifically said that we’d be able to watch the entire debate. What truly bothered me was Maddow’s statement, “We can watch you too.”! Frightening! Totalitarianism isn’t as far away as most think!

In the 1960s this song was so connected to who we were. It’s a one hit wonder but it is remembered many many decades later

(Rick) Evans, who was a science fiction fan, actually developed the song while he was driving in Missouri in 1965. He ended up stopping and actually wrote all the lyrics in about half an hour. He figured it would never sell, but when he and Zager had played one gig for four hours, they were running out of songs. They started singing this and the crowd responded. They recorded it on their own and were selling it out of a station wagon. Someone sent it to multiple record companies who started bidding to sign them to a recording contract.

I know they recorded it in a small studio in Odessa Texas. My office was across the street from this very small one man studio. I took a UPS package that was left at my office for him and when I took it to him the record was on the wall and framed stories about the song and artists and he told me the story.

This is such a Prophetic song!!!!!!! Eve Of Destruction is the other one!!!!! So timeless and WAY ahead of it's time!!!!!

I was born in 1980, but grew up listening to all the pop, rock, and Motown hits from the 50s and 60s, thanks to my parents and their vinyl collection. I always thought this song was silly as a kid, but it's far more prophetic than I ever gave it credit for back then.

"maybe it's only yesterday" The line erases all of the years and brings it back to the present and what the much nearer future holds. Brilliant lyrics, Happy New Year folk, looking forward to a bright 24.

This song reminds me of an ABSOLUTE MUST SEE Classic Movie,, "Soylent Green" (1973)..Set in the future,, The accuracy of it is scary.

Actually brought me to tears hearing this again after so many years. "In the year seventy-five ten If god's a-comin' he oughta make it by then..." Killer irony. Rough and ready, but it's real, a strong idea, moving, thought provoking, good tune. Classic.

The video is footage from a groundbreaking movie called Metropolis. This sci-fi movie has a wonderful history. It preceded the creation scene in 1931 Frankenstein. People have pointed to the robot as having inspired C-3PO’s design in Star Wars. It’s still a powerful message in the movie for our times today. For a long time, it was presumed that much of the trimmed footage in this German film that had been excised for the American release was lost forever. A copy with less resolution was discovered and well preserved in South America. Kino has released a blu-ray of this movie with the missing footage put back in.

I inherited a book from my parents, dated 1956, which describes in detail the history of films of that area. As a kid I loved to go through it, as it has a lot of photos of the films. It starts with the very first movies in history (mostly German films) and covers of course the making of Metropolis. The young lady we see is 16 year old Brigitte Helm. The film shows the imaginary year 2000!

The KZread video images here are from a 1927 silent film, "Metropolis," directed by Fritz Lang. I first heard the 1969 song as a young teen (age 12 or 13) when it was first released and was played on the radio a lot. I have always liked it; It was, sadly, Zager and Evans' only major hit, as far as I know. The prophecies do seem EERILY closer now than in 1969..

This is kind of curious. I just Googled "Metropolis" and saw the following description showing that Lang was a little off in his time calculation: "Directed by Fritz Lang and his wife, Thea von Harbou, "Metropolis" takes place in the year 2000 in the mythical setting of Metropolis. This German story is a utopic vision of a Marxist society that goes too far." So in 1927 Lang was envisioning the year 2000--when in actual history America became scared the world would shut down due to a computer virus. I posted about this last night (including this KZread clip) on my Facebook page, which I rarely use these days! When I was a kid (turned 13 in 1969) I figured that by 2024 we'd have flying cars, etc., like the Jetsons TV cartoon show I used to watch. My FB post jokingly said "I wonder if the Y2K virus is 24 years late."

The story is meant to be mythological, meaning it doesn’t speak to a specific time or place or political agenda. Thea Von Harbou opens the book with “ this book is not of today or of the future. It tells of no place. It serves no cause, party, or class. It has a moral which grows on the pillar of understanding. The mediator between brain and muscle must be the heart” The book provides a far deeper insight into its concerns. There is a deeply religious element not in the movie, as well as a characters that provide greater clues. It’s a story about the existential crisis posed by modernity and technological mediation of human affairs, and the threat to both the human body and soul posed by a hyper materialistic technological system.

​@@pat1cust2 The Y2K scare had nothing to do with a virus. It was shortsighted design. In early computers, memory was expensive, so to conserve space a lot of databases recorded dates with only two digits for the year, assuming that all years begin with "19." When the year 2000 approached, everyone realized that this would no longer work. Many programmers (myself included) spent the last few years of the nineties rewriting software and rebuilding databases so that the systems would recognize "01/01/00" as 2000 and not 1900. Imagine what your bank statement would have looked like in 2000 if the computers said that all of your recent deposits won't happen until 99 years in the future.

Video is not from the 60s but great use of "Metropolis" footage to go with the song. This was a big hit way back when 🤘🏻

And for your movie review, the scenes in this video were taken from an actual silent B/W movie called "Metropolis", 1926 and 115 min. long by director Fritz Lang. And had many messages in it, like workers in the future being slaves to the time clock. As for the song, some of us, me included, counted this as one of our protest songs. Even to this day, I keep it in my "protest" play list. Which is 99% from the 60's and 70's. Because they just don't write protest songs like they used to. So, I guess I should end it with lingo from my baby boom generation, "down with the man, baby. Up with the revolution, can you dig it daddy-o. Of course, you do, only cool cats in this joint".

As someone that was alive and listening to this song when it came out, you have to remember that great changes were happening to the world then, just as you were discussing changes now. I really liked this tune when it came out and then really listened to the lyrics and became a very deep thinker because of it. By the way, the Zager half of this duo, has his company, Zager Guitars, that make some of the finest acoustic guitars available. The guitars are hand built masterpieces.

That government mind control, it was known even back then, and some are still falling for it. This song is a warning to everyone. I agree - Man moved too fast, and its going to blow back in their faces unfortunately.

It's such a great song. I'm 62, and I remember hearing this as a kid and thinking about what they were saying. Talking about picking your son or daughters from a long glass tube. The first test tube baby was born in 1978. So that's a prediction from the song that just happened a lot sooner.

The ending line "so very far away, maybe it's only yesterday" covers the fact that many of these predictions will come true before the year that is stated.

One-hit-wonders, Rick Evans actually wrote this around '64 but it didn't get recorded until '68. It was #1 in US and UK in '69, and they have the distinction of being the only group to hit #1 on both charts and never chart again. Denny Zager has been building custom acoustic guitars since 1969 - I have one, and it is very high quality!

I know they market their guitars as being easier to play somehow. I have my D-28 that I bought new in 1976, but my left hand is getting weak from some mysterious ailment. Is there really anything about Zager that makes fretting easier or is that not your experience? Thanks a lot. Cheers!

@@dggydddy59 Yeah, I pulled a tendon in my L hand/thumb 3+ years ago, plus the arthritis w/age actually made me go get a guitar to help regain some finger strength - compared to my Fender mahogany electric/acoustic the Zager is a bit easier to play - it's the spacing of the strings as well as custom strings are easier on the fingertips - but the sound is way superior (mahogany is more for jazz tones and spruce is more crystal clear, so it's a bit like apples to oranges in that regard). If you can get a Zager on sale, i'd recommend it.

Oh wow. This song was from my generation. I loved the musical arrangement, and the singing. At the time I thought the words were so bizarre. The writer of this song was either psychic or had a crystal ball.

Zager & Evans were an American rock-pop duo active during the late 60's-70's. This futuristic song "In The Year 2525" was their biggest hit in 1969 so they are often classified as a one-hit wonder.

Fabulous choice in listening to this one. I clearly remember this when it came out in 1969. I love how Amber looked close to tears during the song. One interesting fact: this was the ONLY song Zager and Evans had that made it.

Yup,… the sixties. So many songs had messages and meanings. What an era in which to grow up!

There was a lot of songs of protests back then.

I was a kid when this came out and have brought it up in several online chats because of how much of the lyrics have come true. Amber, your facial expressions throughout this video brought tears to my eyes as I saw you realizing what I have been seeing. I pray you guys have a personal relationship with the Lord. Much love to you both.

And of course when this song was written there were no home computers or even computers in the workplace with the very few exceptions where the computer took up a whole room! Written 6 years before Microsoft was even founded! It's amazingly accurate in some of the 'predictions' although they thought they would happen later than they actually have. It does make you wonder where man is heading as we rely more and more on a machine to do everything for us. Great reaction guys - and a happy new year to you and your family. ❤

This song freaks people out, not only because of the things it predicted, but just thinking about the Earth centuries from now.. heck, many millennia. This spent 6 weeks at #1 in 1969, so it was huge!

I remember as a grade-school poet, then later as a budding, amateur songwriter finding this song to be the fascinating and philosophical kind of music that attracted me to the arts.

Amber's reaction was so interesting...Start of song, she tried to get into it... Near end of song, never saw her looked more depressed..........um. EXCELLENT REACTION.

When I was growing up, this was considered to be the epitome of one-hit wonders.

This was the song my husband and I liked. I first used a computer in 1968. Now I am old a widow and my health is deteriorating but I understand what this song is about and the film metropolis was a brilliant silent movie with its Sci fi angle I will never forget this song from 1969.

When this song came out the two thousands were a distant reality. Of course we had shows likw Star Trek, Lost in Space and The Jetsons on TV set in the distant future.

It’s even more amazing when you realize ‘In the Year 2525’ was written in 1964-5 years before it became a hit. The line about not needing husbands or wives because children will be conceived in test tubes was especially prophetic, I thought. (Even though the song said it wouldn’t happen until 6565, the first in vitro baby was born in 1978.) Another song that spans time is the song ‘100 Years’ by Five for Fighting. It’s a sweeter song with a message to just enjoy the moment that you’re in. Happy New Year!!!

This song has always scared me to death. Unfortunately this horrible future seems to be all too plausible.

I heard this maybe in the late 60's, and it sent a shiver down my spine then and still does. Watching both of you change the expressions on your faces as the song played said everything and I felt that strange chill.

Yes. A one hit wonder. But Denny Zager came back to Lincoln Nebraska and started a custom guitar business. He is renowned for his acoustic guitars. Especially 12 string guitars. I own one.

This song scared the daylights out of me when I was a kid….and for different reasons, it still does today.

Remember it well! Of course, the lyrics were the notable part of the song, at a time when our Generation was questioning events in the world. The music itself was catchy, but IMO, most people didn't listen for the music. YMMV though! :) It was fun to hear again, though! Happy New Year, You Guys, and Your whole Family! I was 6 in 1969 and this song was number 1 that summer. My mom drove us to the beach that summer and this song was playing all the time. One of my favorites of all time. It is scary to see how much of this has come true. I miss how much easier things were back then .

Great song, which was a theme song for a great TV show. Cleopatra 2525....can't convince me otherwise!

You’re absolutely right, it was the theme with some alternate lyrics (In the year 2525, three women with the will to survive). Very quirky Sci-fi, but the three lead actresses on the show were why we watched.

The video clips are from the movie, "Metropolis", made in 1927. There was a Giorgio Moroder update in 1984, which added a lot of 80's music to the originally silent movie. You may consider checking that version out on the movie channel. It's all very cool.

My senior year in high school (1969/1970) we had a new principal. He was young and wanted to be relevant with the students. 2525 was a big hit and he referenced this song in EVER assembly. The second half of the year I had him as teacher for an elected class. He brought up this song repeatedly. He kept referring many of us would be alive in the year 2525. We all were confused. Finally one student asked if he meant 2025? The look on his face was priceless. It dawned on him of the big mistake he had used that whole year that he confused these two years. LOL

My grandmother bought me the 45 because it was the first song I ever danced to.

For some reason, where I'm from they used to play this song on the radio all the time in the early 80s - I recall being 6 or so, and being fascinated by the sound of the song, and the talk of a distant future, without really knowing what any of the lyrics meant. Only a couple of year or so ago it popped into my head and I decided to look up the lyrics, and was like "...uhhhh...." similar reaction to what you both had, just crazy how they nailed so much of what we are going through/about to go through. If man is alive/woman can survive indeed.

When this song came out, it was a simpler time. We all saw this as we'd see a science fiction movie or something. Hearing it in today's world, look at how much we now relate to it. It really is creepy. I noutht that 45 when it came out, BTW. We thought it was fun. Happy New Year Amber and Jay!😊

I was a newborn baby in late 1969 when this song was a huge hit. Not bad for some guys from Nebraska! (I'm a proud Nebraskan, too!)

This song definitely stays with you, most songs you listen and forget about them but this one has a special meaning to "what has man done" in the 10,000 yrs we have been here.

Again, for many of us, we were listening to the awesome sci-fi song. Still resonates childhood memories.

I must admit I have always loved this song since I first heard it in the mid 70's and I feel it is extremely prophetic however it is clearly well behind where we are already in some of the predictions. Especially when you consider the part about picking your son or daughter from the bottom of a long glass tube as that happened In 1978 if memory serves me right with the first test tube baby! She was called Louise Brown, I remember that and was created by Dr Patrick Steptoe using IVF here in the UK!

This song came out the year I graduated from HS, 1969. We thought the lyrics were very cool and thought provoking. Hearing it as I enter my 73rd year brings back some great memories of my youth.

He's telling us what's coming but the years just for purpose of fitting in words to match.Much of music and film has told us everything thats coming.

Loved your reaction to this song. It was huge when it came out for many reasons. First the sonic atmosphere makes hairs on your ears stand up and grabs you immediately. Secondly, lyrically, if oracles could sing ... BOOM !!! The song actually had a second wind in the late 70's as FM exploded and played older songs as well as current.

I was just barley into my teens when I heard this back in 69. I was just thinking about this song the other day and yes, it is weird having heard some of the projections become somewhat of a reality as the years pass by.

I am an old fart. You have no idea how all-pervasive this song was in 1969. It was constantly played on the radio. I was 12 and ALL my friends could recite every word of the lyrics.

Another great song that has a creepy vibe is "Timothy" by The Bouys. Released maybe a year after this song which was one of my favs as a kid.

I was a pre-teen when this song came out; it is still on my playlist. Once you have heard this, you cannot un-hear it.
