The LS7 Valve Guide Issue Is 100% VERY REAL!!! (How to remove and check your LS7 heads)

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Get your heads checked and "fixed" ladies and gentlemen. I really wanted to prove this myth wrong but sadly, no. Even my heads fell victim this notorious guide wear. Luckily, none of my valves dropped and cause a catastrophic failure but boy was it on its way.

From additional research Ive done, it looks like the cause of the excessive wear of the guides is from a poor machining of the valve guide bores relative to the valve seat. Any competent machine shop with experience dealing with the heads should know how to permanently remedy the issue. Just installing new guides is only a bandaid. The guide bores themselves need inspection and remedy.

I understand that the factory didn't machine the valve seat cutouts to be concentric with the valve guide bores, thus causing the valve seat inserts and the valve guide guides to also not be concentric. Apparently, this would cause side loads on the valve stems with consequent excessive wear of the guides. Can the guide bores and valve seat cutouts be remachined so that they are concentric before installing new seats and guides? Otherwise, just replacing the guides would put you back to square one with this problem and reset the clock on this engine destroying itself.

i noticed you said to rotate the motor to relieve tension off valve spring to remove rockers. What about reinstalling them when its all fixed? Do the rockers just bolt back on after dropping in the push rods or do you have to rotate motor again to make it bolt up correctly?

Thanks! Sadly if you use the car much it sounds like you'll get the opportunity to do them again... I keep hearing even reworked heads don't last either. I was talking with a guy that works these heads, he said he's never seen a set of reworked heads make it past 15k miles without being out of spec again! Fu@k, this issue really pisses me off!!! I really wish there was a perm fix, other than switching to LS3 heads and intake (with a significant power loss...

You MUST run the lash caps man. It's because the valves are titanium and the rockers are steel. They would wear rapidly and fail without them. The ONLY way to not run them is if you swap to a steel valve...but then you're sacrificing RPM. LS7 life bro...get used to it.
