When installing the pistons and rods install all them with the bolts snug then torque to yield. This helps with side loading or twisting the bearing because of the other rod being beside it during torqing.

I'm looking to rebuild and upgrade my C5's LS6 right now. I'm trying to research everything I can. I plan to put a new stock crank in (flywheel bolt hole got stripped), new bearings on everything, new piston rings, and upgraded cam and spring setup from LG Motorsports. I think I have most of these tools to do the job already. I already have the motor on an engine stand. I don't have an angle gauge, but I could probably eyeball it if it's in like 30deg increments lol. Any place to get a cheap angle gauge?

Hi mate, I’ve loved watching your vids as they’re really well done and an inspiration. Hope you don’t mind if ask a question as I’ve had big drama with my build. It’s about thread/aluminium damage possibly caused by age/washing/bad initial casting. I have an L76 engine. In 2012 had one of the heads off for a repair of a problem I had installing headers. I reinstalled with new head bolts, gasket and a good torque wrench and no problems since then. The engine has almost 300K kms on it now and recently a valve on the other head broke, fell in to the combustion chamber but luckily no block damage. That head was pretty damaged though. I had the engine sent to a good shop for a full overhaul with new springs, valves, cam, cam bushes, conrods, pistons - everything but the crank and block. The damaged head was repaired. As I am on a budget and enjoy working on my car I opted to reinstall the heads and rocker arms myself. I have a brand new expensive calibrated torque wrench and the best head bolts and gaskets. Also new rocker arm bolts. First problem: on the second pass (70°) the internal M11 on no.1 cylinder stripped the threads on the block. Second problem: 4 of the rocker arm bolts stripped their threads in the repaired head. All specs were adhered to (22lb ft., 90° then 70° for the heads and 22 lb ft for the rocker bolts). My engine man is away till the 6th of Jan and has asked me not to do anything else till he’s back. So the questions are: have you ever experienced this kind of thing? Would you be able to tell me if washing aluminium blocks and heads degrades them? Does aluminium break down over time? I know about heli-coils and time -setts and know the latter are needed for threads in the block for the heads. So I’ll go with that. As the head studs have been used I’ll have to get new ones. I am thinking the ARP studs and bolts might be better as I am paranoid about this happening again. But what about the rocker bolts? I couldn’t torque them without 4 of the threads turning to butter. Thanks in advance for your thoughts on these issues. Cheers Erik.

I wish I could give you some good advice but this is a mystery to me. I can't see how cleaning aluminum castings can hurt them. All I can say is wait until your machinist takes a look at it. I'm curious myself so, if you don't mind, please post the findings when you get a chance.

Hi and apologies for the late reply. The thread stripping in the block and head have been put down to engine overheating a few times in its life. This is not 100% conclusive but likely due to metallurgical changes from over heat. I completed the engine and had it just run in when one of the pistons went through the bore, completely writing it off. Bad luck hey. I ended up buying a 2nd hand L98 and had it put in the car with no modifications apart from replacing the rear main. Quite a disappointment going from a cammed up worked L76 to a stock L98. It will be good for me at present and will be replaced with a cammed LS3 when I get round to it.

I've got one of them which is approaching 331,500 kilometres except without cathedral port cylinder heads. Hopefully this easter I'll be able to get in & replace the camshaft & lifters as they are worn & were a bit noisy, they seemed to have quietened down but they still need replacing. The rollers on the lifters squeak a bit as well but the camshaft has gotten hammered. The rest of the engine is o.k. & the kilometres are nothing for an LS1 engine, someone in the U.S. got 500,000 miles out of his 5.3 litre engine although is not classed as an LS1 is still basically the same, only smaller than the 5.7 litre LS1 engine.

The LS engine. A marvel. Does anyone or is anyone interested in engines?? I believe an engine within an engine will raise the 37% bench mark efficiency to almost double or triple its effective efficiency. Basically an exponential growth. And if the rotating block has turbine like fins on its outer shell be it an aluminium block which, it can induce oxygen and air at a very high compression ration and act as its own turbo or even better both turbo and air cooling with little need of a corrosive coolant systems. The gyrating effect and the centrifugal forces could enhance lubricant flow to crucial internal components. Further the rotating body and its momentum not to mention the kinetic forces AND if paired with a transducer can generate electricity and therefore be tuned to even higher than the 12 volts systems that are currently used in our cars. Now imagine if the outer or the encapsulating engine is another shell that acts like a high voltage electric motor, then you have a rocket with two engine propelling whatever car body or vehicle shell you want to create. The question is how to minimize build complexities and keeping it simple in mass production. .. If you know the KISS process. Gosh if only I could find someone to assist me in the development of this ideology.

18:09 "Note the that the connecting rods are installed in the same direction, The flat area on the bolt flange faces the front of the block" That is so unconventional for a V8 engine. That means the bearing tang locators go to the outside on one bank and to the inside on the other bank. Also does the rod have no offset? Meaning, is the center of the piston pin boss centered over the rod bearing bore? Connecting rods of the past are offset in that respect to decrease the width between the cylinder bores.

Wow. Chevrolet has always owned the hot rod market with their small blocks dating back to the 50's and 60's, but now they've really left Ford without a leg to stand on. LS1s are being swapped into everything, and GM owners with these engines seem to have nothing bad to say. Meanwhile Ford's modular V8 suffers from seized spark plugs and no one wants anything to do with them.
