The Lowdown On Lithium Batteries | MC GARAGE

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Lead-acid batteries are cheap and durable and have served us well for more than a century, but these heavy, poison-filled devices are giving way to more energy-dense, non-toxic lithium-ion units. Lithium-ion technology offers a lot of advantages over old-school lead-acid tech, but there are some drawbacks as well. In this video from the MC Garage, Senior Road Test Editor Ari Henning touches on the pros and cons of lithium-ion batteries so you can decide if lithium-ion is right for you.
--
Q: A few times in the last month or so my 2011 Triumph Speed Triple has refused to start, and I've had to jump the battery off my wife's car. It's the original battery and the bike is six years old, so I'm pretty sure it's just time for a replacement. I ride in the Smoky Mountains quite a bit and try to do at least one trackday a year at Barber, so I'm thinking I might spring for a lightweight lithium-ion battery. I know lithium batteries are light, but I've also heard they don't last very long and need a special charger. The guys at my local dealership weren't much help, so I'm hoping Motorcyclist can shed some light on the topic. I don't want to make a $180 mistake! -James Gifford, Chattanooga, TN
A: Six years is a pretty good run for the average lead-acid battery like the one that came in your Speed Triple. Replacing it with a lithium-ion has some plusses and minuses. First, LI batteries are pricier than LA batteries-sometimes by a lot-and while they're also a lot lighter, many are smaller too, so you have to pad the empty space in the battery box unless you find an LI unit the same size as the OE battery.
All batteries self-discharge when not in use, but LIs are slower to self-discharge than LA batteries, which means you may not need a trickle charger for storage. If the voltage drops too low, however, an LI battery can suffer damage or even a permanent demise, while an LA battery can often be brought back to life from nearly zero voltage. LI batteries need special chargers too, but they can be used to charge LA batteries.
Another quirk of LI batteries is they don’t crank very hard right away in cold temperatures. You can “wake them up” by turning on the headlights for a few minutes, but when the engine is warm or the weather warms up, they crank just fine. With these caveats in mind your $180 investment will pay off nicely, especially on your trackdays when less weight equals lower lap times.

I had a lithium battery a few years ago in my car. Worked well and gave a lot more power when cranking. However one day after about a year my car came to a stop on the highway with all the electrics shutting off. The battery had died without warning and was a complete open circuit. This would never happen with a lead acid battery as they just slowly loose capacity over time, Lithium ion batteries just turn off without warning. There is a reason new vehicles still come with lead acid batteries despite the weight and the problems they cause.

This happened because you had a faulty or cheap battery. They should last for 10 years with a bms system. And an open means somethings shorted which again sounds like a bad or out of spec battery. It didn't dead stop because it was lithium either. It dead stopped because the car lost battery voltage when the system became open. It can't slowly have less power when it can't make a complete circuit.

Special Chargers????? The Lithium cells need to be equal in level of charge before charging. That is what the Lithium chargers do and why most Lithium Batteries need a special charger. The WPS battery has the balancer built into the battery. Also they have a low voltage cut off built in to protect them from getting too low. So, no special battery charger needed for WPS. Oh, but make sure that your battery charger isn't an "auto desulfation" type charger. Those put way too much voltage in and will damage your Lithium battery. Also, there is absolutely nothing in a WPS Lithium battery that is combustible. The Lithium in the WPS batteries is different than the cordless drills, remote control cars, and hoverboards have in them. Safety is key with WPS!

I think he's wrong about this one. A regular low current 12v charger (2 amp or less) should work fine charging Li Ion batteries of most 500cc+ motorcycles. Just put an electric meter on it and make sure to shut off the charger when it gets to 13.5 volts- and *definitely* don't let it get above 14.5 volts. A charger made for Li ion will do that shut off automatically... which is why they cost more. Regular lead acid batteries are immune to slight overcharging (you can put 15V into a lead acid all day and it won't hurt it), but that will kill a Li Ion battery.

I am using a Schumacher SP6 on my Harley 750. It will do Conventional and Lithium Batteries. Just select the mode. And will Maintain as well. My 2015 Harley Street 750 has a Hard Drive Lithium installed. Direct Drop in. And has about 100 CCA More than the Factory battery. The other nice feature is, The SP6 will display a Charge Percentage. Along with a "Bad Battery, Charge Aborted" message.

There are multiple cells in a lithium ion battery, and they might not all be at the same level. A regular lead acid battery charger is going to charge as if all the cells are at the same level of charge. If even one of them is higher than the others this can result in some rather spectacular fire works unless it's a Lithium Iron Phosphate battery, then it won't explode, but it will still die.

@@GoForGold256 i think it depends on the battery. I swapped to a lithium ion on my 1988 KZ1000-P with no mods to the bike and it's working fine... Can't run the bike in below freezing temperatures, though, or the battery will charge while frozen and that'll kill the battery? If it requires a special charger, there'll probably be a special charger port. In can't say for certain though.

I was told by a local battery shop that if you buy a li-ion battery specifically designed for a motorbike (or car) there is a charging circuit built into the battery that controls the charge that comes from the bikes charging circuit (which in older bikes were designed for lead acid). You can therefore safely use a lead acid battery charger.

The old lead acid ones often last 10 years plus if treated well. I don't think it's really an issue to compare either. Cost and weight play a big part. The Ah rating concerns me a little paying double the price in some cases to go from 16.5Ah to a 5Ah lithium seems bad. Even if the cca is higher

Just forgot to mention a critical part of the system, the charging part. Just look at the cordless tool chargers, they have half a dozen connections and for good reason, each cell or group of cells gets monitored whilst charging. There is a bit more science going on, than is mentioned here.

I personally went with the Lithium Iron Phosphate Battery tender battery over the one he showed, because it has additional stable property making it less likely to melt down in the even of vibrations and such.

  • @craigmartin822

Most do. The Lithium cells need to be equal in level of charge before charging. That is what the Lithium chargers do.

I installed a lithium battery in my motorcycle. I believe it has protection for not dropping under a voltage range. If the battery shuts down due to protection the bike has 0 volts, this could happen for any reason, shutting the bike off with the run switch and leaving lights on for as little as 5mins. Once the battery drops to protection value, safety kicks in and the motorcycle power goes to 0v. Why is this important? Because if you find yourself in this situation and try to start the bike by pushing it. You will be out of luck, ignition with 0 volts will never feed the ignition module and your spark plugs become a compression sealer decoration, no spark on them while try to crank in gear push or down the hill. Jump is a must if safety drop is active, not sure how it will work with kick start equipped motorcycles under that situation.
