“Get it out of here!” Thorndyke snarls, then gives Herbie a kick. “What’s that for?” says Jim, challenging Thorndyke. “I beg your pardon?” “Why don’t you let the little car alone?” This is a classic confrontational scene between the two men when it was expertly shown, they had initially appeared to hit it off, but it went downhill fast when Jim asked Thorndyke about a car within his price range. A bit later, Havershaw and the mechanics are pushing Herbie back, he can be seen resisting them. Herbie felt he had made a new friend, as he was fully aware that Jim had stood up for him in the showroom.

If Disney can produce a film exploring Cruella DeVille’s origin, I can picture a film that portrays Thorndyke as a bitter man having to come to terms with Germany’s post-war economic miracle, which is represented through the rise of the German import scene. That, in his younger years, Thorndyke suffered a traumatic experience in the war. Whether it was being jumped by bf109s in the skies over Britain, or perhaps the trauma of slaying a Tiger after a deployment of Shermans he is part of are knocked out following Normandy. Years later after making a fresh start in the US, all that comes flooding back when he is forced to deal with the ‘little car’. Those experiences flooding back when presented with the innocent looking Volkswagen Beetle.

Same here. I would watch Herbie all the time too. This and Herbie goes to Monte Carlo are my top picks. The other movies were good too, but there’s something about those two movies that I really like
If Disney can produce a film exploring Cruella DeVille’s origin, I can picture a film that portrays Thorndyke as a bitter man having to come to terms with Germany’s post-war economic miracle, which is represented through the rise of the German import scene.

Mr Wu's back story could have been similar.
Interesting factoid: The Lovebug takes place in the same time and in the same city as another movie that has arguably the best car chase scene in history. I’m talking about Steve McQueen’s Bullitt. Bonus fact, during Bullitt’s epic chase, a VW bug keeps showing up in front of the fast moving cars time and again. Must be a close relative of Herbie.
