In March 2018, I had the opportunity to work with two of my ultra-running idols, Dylan Bowman & Rickey Gates. Dylan's goal was to set the fastest known time on the Lost Coast Trail - a time previously set by Rickey Gates and Leor Pantilat. The trail is 56 miles long, features rugged cliffs and mountains with 10,000ft of gain as well as a long sandy beach section where you have to race the tide or risk serious danger. This was an incredible experience brought together by RedBull and I can't thank them enough! If you'd like to see the RedBull version of the video that I made, check it out here: • CALIFORNIA'S LOST COAS...

Me and my cousin did this in like 2008 almost ALMOST in one single push. It was right after we started that we realized that we should not have left our other cousin alone. We were selfishly honed in on this hike and only realized about 3 hours in that this other cousin who had dropped us off was not doing well emotionally. He was stoic as ever but some very alarming signs were there. So yea about 3 hours in we were overcome with guilt and concern. Instead of turning around, which I swear did not even seem like an option at the time, we pushed. Hard. There are sections of this hike that you’re supposed to wait out for high tide but we instead free climbed the rock faces and traversed them sideways as waves smashed against them right below our feet. I’m not too proud to admit that after minimal sleep and the push to finish before nightfall of day 2, I was mentally broken and relied on my cousin and his unbelievably strong mentality to finish. We did it in under 48 hours, not a record or anything, not even something I’ve ever bragged about before, but seeing this video made me want to share my story. And oh yea, we totally saw whales. Whales and a lot of gigantic sea lions. Those things are so much bigger than you’d ever imagine and we saw one dead washed up with a bite the size of a car hood taken out of it. The worst part was drinking the water we boiled over a camp fire. Smoky flavored water is terrible. In closing I just wana say shoutout to Joe my cousin who really took me with him and kept the morale high. If you’ve ever done something similar to this, you know morale is only secondary to food and water.

I just ran the southern section from USAL to SHELTER COVE. It was brutal. 12 hrs exactly. I’m an old beginner trail runner. Amazing, desperate and dangerous fun! I want the whole shootin’ match now. Plenty of water. GPS a must or you’ll end up living out there! Milo

I curious why you chose to run in the winter with predominate large north swells washing so far up the beaches? Summertime in that area is absent large north swells. I would recommend to anyone else who is not a surfer and just wanting to explore the lost coast along the shoreline to plan it for the summer during neap tides.

Thanks for this longer version ! I was frustrated and felt it was too short ! I would have liked to know more of the trail and tide. If one goes southbound how much time does it give %tides ? I'm in France and we have quite a few "race vs tide" in our wide flat bays but their réputation is from the bodycount ! So how safe would it be for a normal trail runner ?

Yes Ethan - afraid to say that I’ve mixed feelings when I see a logo being so much on show, especially when that is true of videos by otherwise independent video-makers like yourself. Plus RB is a pretty lame drink that that does not have much to do with any athletic ethic. Hope this clarifies. Thanks for replying though

I don't think I could love this more if I tried! I'm tempted to record a video of a story I experienced in the Mattole Campground. As wild and remote as that place is it attracts the crazies both as residents and transients. The story is way too much to type out in the comment section. Just a word of warning to all who dare pass, the hills there hold secrets and danger and to ignore the risks could spell disaster. Because this experience I speak of happened with my family present I don't think I'll be able to talk my wife into tackling this with me. She got me into running and we are a team in every race we enter. To take this on would have to be a mutually agreed upon adventure. It's a shame because I love that place! Unfortunately I fear it now too! Comment if you want to hear the story, especially any of the key players here, Ethan, Dylan, Ricky, etc....

It's definitely a region to be respected - both geographically and those who reside there. We came across our fair share of interesting personalities and did our utmost diligence in leaving no trace and ruffling zero feathers. People who live this remotely do so for a reason.
