The Lost Coast: California’s longest stretch of undeveloped coastline!
We had an amazing long weekend backpacking on the Lost Coast, California’s longest stretch of undeveloped coast line!
We saw a coyote on the beach, a washed-up octopus, and a whale skull. Renee got a tick on her underwear, but spotted it before it bit. Tim got a case of poison oak (like usual), but it’s staying mild so far. Falling asleep to the sound of waves outside the tent is hard to beat. Now we’ve camped on Washington’s coast and California’s... Oregon-we’re coming for you!
We intended to do the 25-mile Lost Coast Trail 2X (out and back), but because of heavy rain we started a day later than planned and had to adjust. It pays to stay flexible - instead we did a shorter lollipop route that took us high into the mountains above the ocean and then back down to the black sand beaches on the coast. We got to enjoy a more diverse landscape and experienced even more of the region than planned!

I’m 64 and hiked the lost coast trail in March 2023. The terrain on the beach is way more challenging than people think. The black sand can become like quicksand, requiring maximum exertion with each step, there are miles of treacherous boulder fields and long stretches of medium sized rock patches in between, that can roll an ankle with each step. And, people who misread the tide charts die on the LCT every year. One of the 5 most physically demanding experiences of my life. One of the top 3 best experiences of my life.

My former wife and I biked down from Arcata, hiked the Lost Coast, hitchhiked back north to get our bikes, and rode to Fort Bragg. Amazing adventure and incredible views & wildlife; rattlesnakes, bear, deer, and an elk herd climbing a gulch- surrounding us on the trail. Amazing!

I had never checked out their website before, but went there hoping to find that recipe for both you and me. Sadly, I didn't see it, but if you haven't checked it out, there are quite a few other yummy looking recipes. I occasionally eat premade Maya Kaimal Everyday Dal microwave packs. It seems like you could use those or make your own dal and cooked rice and spread it over the dehydrator trays. In their explanation of the Ethiopian Lentils and Rice recipe, they say to use the fruit roll up sheet or parchment paper in the dehydrator trays first. So even though there isn't a full recipe available for this yet, you might be able to piece together enough information to work it out for yourself. I hope something here helped! Good luck!
