I am Cambodian. The major reason for the Empire downfall was the religious revolution. Cambodia went through many dark histories converting from Hinduism to Buddhism. The continuation of the religious battle and brotherhood bloodshed almost wiped out Cambodia from the world's map. My fellow Cambodian should remember and learn from our great ancestors and legacy of Hinduism.

Because it's a Vishnu/Hindu temple, I wonder if the epic battles shown on the temple walls are about the Mahabarata and Ramayana instead of what's stated on the documentary (wars against Siam or Vietnam)?

Most people keep saying its made by Indians, but that is incorrect, yes, it was influenced by Hindu culture and religion, but if you were to say it was made by Indians than it would be like saying the Greeks built the Rome Empire which is incorrect. The Khmer empire is built by Khmer people.

@Nana N. Thanks for the great response . Yeah there are currently no records of a khmer writing system prior to the arrival of the indians, but they had a civilization which was recorded by hindu missionaries. It was believed that the prince of southern india married a khmer princess, thus creating a new age of empire.

All empires will come to an end, including the United States, China, and Russia. The US is only about 240 years old, and it already has a lot of political problems and on the verge of a second civil war. For the Khmer Empire to last for about 600 years is impressive.

That just goes for all civilitations, cities, countries, kingdoms. If an empire were to stay forever it would be every human working with each other in harmony, almost like watching bees flying around pollinating doing their jobs in peace with just about no disrubtions. The human race has put a knife to its own heart and has been pushing the blade into it for some time now. Everyone and i mean EVERYONE is a product of their environment, this goes to the most extreme lengths... All we are is one group (humans) seperated into tiny tiny groups that fight against each other. idk why we do this, i think its out of ego and pride. thats why this place is so horrible and all we do is fight. i wish i could express myself better but my mother is calling me for dinnner

I’m Kun Khmer my ancestors and relatives from my beloved father side are all born in Siem Province I can’t believe my father relatives still survive during the era of Genocide they never left their birthplaces in Siem Riep til nowadays time , since my birth in Pailin after 2 years shy of my birthday Pol Pol took over Phnom Penh , my parent escape at the very near end without bringing anything wich at that time he was an wellknown , successful entrepreneur in Gemologies business in Pailin. My brother in law a well educated man from Phnom Penh he’s mostly name he’s children with Sanskrit names. Sanskrit are part of a divine and royal languages as Khmers grammars I’ll visit Cambodia a few times and Sanskrit it’s printed and carve on every inches on the corner stones of Angkor Temple mostly the high scholar Khmers Religious knows how to translated Sanskrit . Im so honor and a sense of pride to know that our great Kjng Jayvarman ll it’s the great and powerful man that stand strong against the face of adversaries from neighbors countries that has attempted to take over Angkor Wat at a multitude times. Despiste our Great King strive to defend he’s Empire slowly , Khmers territories are diminishing in sizes and dimensions against the adversaries . The Old Khmer Empire are massive that expanded to half of South East Asia country during the Khmer Ancient Civilization. That’s the strongest evidences that support how influential to know that our Khmers cultures, Classical dances and clothings are heavily influence toward other neighbors people .🇰🇭🇰🇭🇰🇭🇰🇭🇰🇭🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏❤️❤️❤️❤️

Found in the net. Recently there is a Tamil movie named PS-1, which tells about Chola empire. Tamil rulers did not build Angkor Wat. However, it was built under Tamil (Chola) rule. It was during the reign of Kulothunga I (Rajendra Chola’s son) that Suryavarman II ascended the throne in Cambodia. He too maintained friendly relations and had lot of trade relationships.

Like saying that the church ‘ Notre Dame de Paris” in France is Roman catholic, when the fact is that it was built by the French catholic and architects in France. The similarity here is only the same religion, that is Rome and France has the same religion. This is the same thing with Cambodia and India, they had the same religion Hindu. And all those ca. four thousand temples were built by different Khmer Kings. By the way there are 7 thick volumes of inscriptions from various Cambodian temples that have been archived and photographed by French archeologists, and translated. The inscriptions are mainly in Sanskrit and Cambodian language and only one or two in tamil.

This documentary is at best a nostalgic depiction of how the Khmer empire would have been in their peak through western eyes. The names of the kings who build these magnificent temples such as Suriavarman, Jayavarnan, Indravarman, Yasovarman, Rajendravarman are identical to the Pallava kings who ruled what is now the Southern Indian states of Tamil Nadu and Andhra between 6-9 AD. It's interesting to note the demise of the Pallavas and rise of the mighty Chola's coincided with building of these temples in Cambodia around the same time. The walls of temple are decorated with stone carvings depicting the great battles of Mahabartham and Ramayana of the hindu folklore. More ever even to this day the Cambodians practice a form of dance called the Apsara's (Deva nangai)which is very similar to the ancient tamil classical dance Barathanatiyam. Khmer history is conveniently woven around the building of the temples in the 8th century AD. There is no pre Angkoran history except this magnificent temple was build by Suryavarman in the 8th century AD. Could it be that the seafaring Pallavas landed in Cambodia to escape the wrath of the rising Chola Empire? Could it be that the great Rajendra Cholan in his quest to wipe out the remnants of the Pallavas mistakenly landed in Java - present day Indonesia - and defeated the Sri Vijaya empire that was ruling the island of Java at that time.

Could this be a tomb or hidden library of ancient scrolls. It would be a jail of some kind for something they didn't want loosed ounce imprisoned. Makes the imagination go why haven't they tried To open the box. Could this be pandoras box ???? So fascinating.

^ Thailand was not an established country at this time, nor was it built by strictly "Indians". False info Some historians believe that Jayavarman VII chose to convert Angkor Wat to Buddhism to symbolize his victory over the Cham, who were Hindu and who had previously occupied parts of Cambodia. Others speculate that the conversion was more pragmatic, as Buddhism was gaining popularity among the Khmer people and Jayavarman VII saw it as a way to solidify his rule and win the support of the populace

Westerners have always miscalculated about timing of Hindu architecture because they don't know Hindu history and Hindu old scriptures on which construction of this temple is based..this temple must be older than calculations because otherwise it's details would have been in Indian old scriptures.. also construction must have spanned over generations..now carving of Buddha isn't as much in details as temples itself...which suggests that there must be change in dynasty which destroyed original values of temple itself... It shows political use of religions by kings n rulers.. because why Buddha following rulers didn't build separate temple rather than keeping idols...which is against teaching of Buddha ( actual most peaceful religion of the World)

When the king converted to Buddhism the country turned from a nation of builders to a nation of philosophic beggars. The monuments to the Hindu gods were devoid of meaning and the quest for personal Nirvana was the most important thing. The ancient form of ‘lying flat’ being adopted by the modern day Chinese youth; Taoism replacing Confucianism.
