More and more people might face a tough time in retirement. Low-paying jobs, inflation, and high rents make it hard to save. Now, middle-class Americans find it tough to own a home too, leaving them without a place to retire.

This is precisely why I like having a portfolio coach guide my day-to-day market decisions: with their extensive knowledge of going long and short at the same time, using risk for its asymmetrical upside and laying it off as a hedge against the inevitable downward turns, their skillset makes it nearly impossible for them to underperform. I've been utilizing a portfolio coach for more than two years, and I've made over $800,000.

For the kids in the first story, you have a mother and a father. You have a roof over your head and food in the fridge. You are driven to school, not in a car as fancy as others but it works. You were not abandoned or abused. You have a father that cares and fixes your lunch every day. What else do you want!???! I wish I had half of that when I was your age!

It broke my heart that the kids make him drop them off in the back. My father is 77 years old now & we grew up poor. Broken down cars, beat up shoes, no eating out... you get the picture. My dad struggled finding work, but he took what he could get. I was proud of him no matter what. I could have never made him feel worse by showing how embarrassed I was. Marie Taylor Looked to me that Bob’s family was living in a very nice home compared to the average American. Her parents paid the rent. Those children could do some type of work as well as going to school. They probably could budget their food expense. Only one doing everything was Bob and he was the only one that looked normal weight. You can save a lot of money if you plan your meals correctly and you don’t add in lots of ready to eat food. Bob is a very devoted spouse and father.

Dederina . My thoughts exactly. The kids are crying for the past, not thinking how they can make things better. Both are old enough to help. But they’re just feeling sorry for what they have lost. I grew up in England after the WW2, we were seven kids in our family, I was four years old, when it ended, my father used to say to us ‘You’re alive! Think lucky’. Poor Bob. He shouldn’t be so hard on himself, just turn his kids into survival mode. ps. My Dad grew most of our food, all organic in those days. We had to paint the chicken house.😂. I could write a book. haha.

I've noticed that people who never had to struggle don't handle financial, job and or health declines well. The coping skills haven't been developed. Poorer people seem always in survival mode and plan multiple ways to combat hardships . The upper middle-class and higher keep looking for their cheese refusing to believe it is gone. If their self worth is tied to their social standing or "image" they refuse to save themselves early on by ditching The "status symbols, expensive homes, materials and debt." Humility and common sense seems harder to attain the wealthier one becomes.

How is it possible that we are measuring a person's worth by how much their paycheck is? Bob seems like one of the best dads out there. Getting laid off can happen to anyone. This same situation happened to my own family when me and my brother were in our teens. We had to get out there and find whatever job was available and contribute to the family. We never blamed our dad for losing his job. We were proud of him and we felt it was our time to help out instead of just always depending on him. That's what a families are supposed to do, help each other in times of hardship. You only have one Dad in your life.

Save on electricity by not putting up xmas lights. Have the kids refill their water bottles at the drinking fountain and take reusable bags for lunch. Rent a house without a finished basement, that's cheaper. There's a lot of money being spent that's totally unnecessary! And the kids keeping up appearances? F-that! They can catch a bus to a local public school to save on gas and get over it. I know that's harsh...but families should work together and support one another. Why is this all on Bob???

hi hippiechick, I don't think he is doing everything possible. He looks for good paying jobs, or jobs he wants, instead of a full time job. And as this was aired back in 2012, he was out of a job for 4 years! I know it was tough on him to loose his job and the strain it caused for himself and his family. Also, I don't know why his in-laws are treating him badly. I can guess though! Was there a follow up on this video, about Bob? Where is he now? I'd like to know, and hope he and his family are doing well.

Their “modest house” is a gorgeous home. If no one has a job why not live somewhere that is more affordable? Somewhere where there will be work, and the cost of living is low. Plenty of places in america. There are even towns giving away plots of land to get people to live there! We have done so many disservice with our corporate view of food and home. The wife said, “when does the good stuff come?” The good stuff happened... the good stuff was an idol... and maybe this is their time to realize what is the real good stuff! Love. Family... so sad to see so many squander so many good gifts.

It has been very hard, we had to move into a garage, but God is faithful, we stuck together, instead of fighting each other we blessed each other instead of complaining about what we did not have we where thankful for what we do have, every meal we gave thanks for, we gave from the very little we had to others in need, circumstances are always set to change, it changed for us my husband is now employed and it will change for you too. start having an attitude of gratitude of thanking giving, and of love and things will change, know your self worth, because you are worthy and you will get there dont give up.

The United States Congress and State governments need to enforce the age discrimination laws they choose to ignore. It is against the law to discriminate against older people but it happens frequently. Most older people who get laid off, whether in personal or in-mass layoffs, have difficulty getting another job because, if they are over 40, they're considered old by today's employers' and corporations' standards. Loss of homes, unemployment benefits that run out, and homelessness follows. Even worse, older people are forced to take early Social Security at age 62 instead of waiting until 66. When they have no choice but to take early monthly SS checks, they lose at least 25% of SS income for as long as they live. Women, living on SS, are probably the highest numbers living in poverty in the USA. For many decades, businesses have been disloyal when they discriminated against competent, loyal employees in favor of employing younger, less costly and skilled workers. This scenario continues against older workers today. I pray our government will help the elderly who became poor due to being shut out of decent employment opportunities and suffer this terrible loss of SS benefits they were entitled to previously.

Will they empathize with the pain that you are going through? Will they be able to weather the storms they will have to deal with as adults or will they spend their life trying to blame their misfortunes on others? Will they ever be able to look at those less fortunate without distain for their poverty? Will they ever be able to appreciate the truly important things in life, not the car they drive or the clothes they wear or the house they live in? We shouldn’t be afraid to say no to our kids. It’s in their best interest to know how to weather the storms and still feel good in their own skins.

I do feel sorry for these kids in a way but when I watched the documentaries about kids that walk 5-20km to go to school every day in the Sahara Desert, Bulgaria, Phillipines, Peru, Kenya, Russia or Bolivia and many other arduous & inhospitable places in this world makes me think about the way of life in how people truly value what they have. Whereas the poor children of Kenya (walking 5 km to school in 120 degree Fahrenheit dream of running water & sewage & have the least amount of money seem to have the most utmost respect and love for their families & cultures no matter how difficult the circumstances). Also considering when extremely poor children have to manage walking 2-4 hrs to & from school in -20 to 120 degree Fahrenheit weather climbing mountains, vines, jungle & rugged terrain just to get a 5 hr education during an average school day appreciate the chance for education brings me to tears. I cannot believe I complained at one time living in a trailer park walking 1.5 miles to school. Makes me appreciate what I have now, but I would've hated to go from bad to worse & couldn't imagine going from AMAZING to ok, but kids adapt more easily when they are raised with the correct morals & ethics I do believe. If children have happy fulfilling lives, I do believe they can triumph above the downgrading of a mansion to a single family ranch home rental. My father use to punish us when we said, "drop us off school 3 blocks before we get their" by installing an extremely loud AHHHUUUUGAH horn into the tiny Bright electric blue Gremlin car he'd use to drop us off at school once a week. Lol.. Hated it then, HILARIOUS NOW!. Brilliant FATHER! 👏 👏 👏

If it were possible, those teenager's should be working part-time jobs after school, rather then being upset with dad, because he was FIRED from his job and there was NOTHING he could do about it! Parent's had better start interacting with their children REALITY BASED! Informing them how our government SCREWED us with NAFTA, and other devastating policies AGAINST everyday working Americans! These thoughtless kids better realize, the jobs that their parents had decades ago, they won't even realize, they will probably still be living at home with their Parents! Parent's STOP SPOILING your Children, let them face reality with you, and what they can expect when they become young adults, wanting to SPREAD their wings!

Why is the Wife and her family blaming the Dad. He lost his job , he wasn’t fired and he’s trying his best to do what he can. So the wife loves him when he can provide and when he can’t, then turns her back on him. This guy loves his children and I hope the children realize how lucky they are to have a father like him , who would do anything to support his children. BTW why doesn’t the wife work , and his teenage kids should work too.

Even though their life has changed they have family that have them living much better then those without. The father doesn't directly control the job market. The family as a team could create a job or jobs to help.

I finally got a new (to me car) after driving my other one for 20+ years. I got it cheap on a neighborhood listserv, when the daughter of the seller (a college student) needed a better car. I will take that car gladly, due to low mileage and cheap maintenance and big enough space to be able to live out of the car (if ever necessary). Yes, I always assume paychecks will stop and so I buy my cars with the thought in mind, can I sleep in it with my dog and have space to my essentials. Growing up as poor as I did, I never assume there is money to buy groceries.

You HAVE a place in heaven. your 'worth' as a father and a husband doesn't even go down a bit in my eyes. You are a wonderful person, even without that ton of cash you could haul with an 'executive' job. Being a janitor, though being sadly underpaid, is an important job. Bobs oldest son is wonderful. His younger son seems good too. The other kids and the wife are ✨bad nuts✨ Honestly the kids are the way they are due to their parents, and I think mostly the mom. She seems to encourage the spirit of being harsh and ungrateful. Bob is really trying. . .his kids seem to understand that but they’re shell shocked. Which makes sense, they’re kids.
