The Lost Album of John Coltrane

Both Directions at Once is the lost album of the legendary John Coltrane. Recorded on March 6, 1963 at Van Gelder Studios in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey, the tapes had never been commercially released...until now!
Thanks to Jim Piela for playing sax and Josh Bailey for playing drums and engineering the session at the end! It was a super super last minute jam we put together, but we had fun learning Coltrane’s music!

    I love how you talked about how the absence of the piano playing chords gives it a unique and interesting sound. People often analyze music as if more automatically makes a piece of music better or more sophisticated, and forget about the importance of negative space and what's not being played.

    Adam, I have a question for your next Q&A: What do you think about Noise Music? Have you heard of it, and if so do you like it? Also what are your favourite artists? I am a huge fan of many japanoise artists like Merzbow, Masonna and Hijokaidan... Do you know them? What is your opinion of the track by BiS階段 (BIS kaidan) called 好き好き大好き (suki suki daisuki)? It's a very interesting cover of a famous song by Jun Togawa by a collaboration group, consisting a Japanese Idol group called BIS and Hijokaidan, a noise music and performance group. It's a very interesting aesthetic that kind of mixes the sound of harsh noise with a more "pop-ish" genre and that seems like it's pretty well received (at least taking into account the nature of the music), judging by the likes dislikes, the comments and the views of the video, with an occasional comment stating that it isn't music or and that it's just awful... Also, can you could talk about the "performance art" aspect of these groups, oftenly associated with danger music, like that time a Japanoise artist called Hanatarash drove an excavator (there are images on youtube) through the back of the venue... What do you think would be the objective of putting the audience in danger and why do you think there were people going to these gigs where you even have to sign something saying that the likelyhood of getting badly injured is quite high! (I've even seen online that there was a time were Yamantaka Eye, the founder of Hanatarash almost chopped his leg off with a chainsaw...) I would absolutely LOVE if you gave us you opinion on these topics. Sorry for the endless stream of questions, Stay cool.

    Very cool song, would love to hear more "harsh noise pop." Personally I think people overreact to noise music, it's not really that alien when you compare it to something like brostep which made chaotic explosions of synthetic noise mainstream. Everyone always focuses on the "instrumentation" and texture as being too out there but it really seems like the lack of structure is what really puts most people off, yet you rarely find anyone freaking out about how ambient isn't "real music." It'll probably stay on the extreme fringes of music fandom for quite some time (if not forever) but I wouldn't be surprised to see harsh noise or a hybrid subgenre of it gain more acceptance within a century or so. Just compare the average music of today to the average music of the early 1900s, time after time history has shown that while they struggle at first new "rebellious" forms of music always become the new normal as the shock wears off.

  • @gon9684

    @gon9684

    Agree, I think that noise has great potential musically, even for the "masses"... Most noise music isn't that hard to listen to, at least compared to many comtemporary classical and even some free Jazz musicians... I'd rather listen to an hour of Merzbow's textures and sounds than 15 minutes of Lachemann or Ferneyhough (which I respect and like to know how they think music, but it's oftenly too hard to listen to...)... I also think that noise music in general has great potential has a "combination" of genres... Especially Pop + noise, Jazz + noise and Metal/Rock + Noise in my opinion... Full of Hell's collaboration album with Merzbow is a pretty decent example of the mainstream potential of combining noise with other stuff :P

    Hey Adam, I always notice how in some instruments an octave (and similarly other intervals, but it's most noticeable with an octave) seems to be "bigger" or "smaller" than other instruments. For example, a guitar has "bigger" octave than a piano, a trumpet has "bigger" octave than a flute etc. It's not about the note's actual pitch but more about the sensation of separation between notes. Do you happen to know what causes this effect? Does it have to do with an instrument's harmonics? Thanks!

  • @BrianFromBoise

    @BrianFromBoise

    Жыл бұрын

    What it sounds like you’re describing are the acoustic qualities of the instrument and the nature of their reverberation of resonate frequencies. To simplify the concept, the larger the instrument, the more it can vibrate and thus, the more “forceful” it vibrates when certain frequencies and sub frequencies are expressed. Also, some shapes and materials have more harmonic frequencies present than others. The presence of more harmonics makes the sound “richer”, fuller and thicker.

    I find jazz interesting because I love to play it, but I don’t find joy in listening to it. Idk, for whatever reason I can’t latch on to any melodies most the time. Big band stuff, especially buddy rich, has this energy and structure that really gets me pumping, but smaller quartets seemed so based around improvisation, completely without form, that there’s nothing memorable about it for the sake of listening to it. Now playing it is a different story, as a drummer there’s not an abundance of rules in jazz to follow, you keep swing time and you make sure your hi-hat falls on the 2 and 4, so I really enjoy just playing around with the loose structure of any particular song. I just don’t know if what I’m creating when I loosely toy around with what was once a jazz standard could really be considered music. It’s like the difference between a meticulously planned novel and a casual conversation. I enjoy talking, I enjoy reading, but I’m not sure I’d want to read a transcript of two random people talking, you know?

  • @remixedremixes

    JackBluebee I like the analogy of reading a transcript of a conversation. I love listening to podcasts, another form of media that isn't pre-edited or structured in anyway. They provide an insight into other people experiences and perspectives that I would not find in any other form of media. So that might explain why I like listening to such improvisational music. It is a musical conversation and you don't always listen for the "tune" like you would in other music. Like watching a live painting, the enjoyment comes from watching the way they approach the canvas, move their brush, and bring their idea into reality with the tools they have, rather than seeing the finished piece itself.

    From what I can see, it's nothing fancy but should get the job done. Something PL990-ish (with an AT3600 or similar?) run into an A.R.T. phono pre, with a little class D amplifier (Sure or similar) for speakers. Mixer looks like a Mackie Mix 8. About what one would expect from a young guy not exactly _drowning_ in money (and presumably lacking the time / experience to fix up a vintage Craigslist find). Better than one of these godawful cheap plasticky USB things for sure.

    3:49 "Rubato" means just stolen in italian, stolen time would be "Tempo Rubato" (just random italian nitpicking :P ) (of course in the grammatical sense, in a musical context the subject is implied, so rubato is fine)

  • @bacicinvatteneaca

    @bacicinvatteneaca

    lobsternutz yeah but the point is that the word rubato is a past participle of rubare, to steal. It's about tempo by context, it doesn't contain the concept of tempo as a word.

    Trane and a lot of jazz music is pretty cool, but I don't understand any of it, and the music has no impact on me. But I understand this album for some people is like if the Beatles released an unreleased album for me. Ultimately jazz comes off as mostly squeaky noise.

  • @CaptainSunFlare

    @CaptainSunFlare

    HarryIsTheGamingGeek that's fine. It doesn't have to appeal to you. Tbh I get the same feeling hearing the Beatles. They just sound like a bunch of high pitched me singing over repetitious guitar chords. As long as you can understand and accept the opinion you just read and understand whatever you felt about it is what others may feel about your thoughts on jazz, as well a respecting others opinion (which you seemed to do. No hate on such a influential early rock group either fyi) it's fine to think that. Music is o my what it means to you
