    The thing about the design of the original Enterprise is that even after 60 years, it doesn't look old or dated. It is a timeless design.

    Im fairly convinced this is the original. Aside from the comparison points already mentioned, one of the big giveaways is the shape of the Primary Hull. Both the original and the Ebay model have a more bulbous shape to the top and bottom halves of the Primary Hull. So this would not be a modified version of the Polar Lights model - unless someone went to GREAT LENGTHS to shape it this way. And if it was a fake, why not straighten the nacelles a bit?

    Watch the Original Series -- the Original Original series, not the Remastered Edition; you'll be able to spot FOUR distinctly different versions of the Enterprise. One is the AMT 18" kit, seen in "The Trouble with Tribbles" and as the U.S.S Constellation in "The Doomsday Machine" One is a tiny metal replica, seen in "Catspaw" and doubling as the Enterprise in "the Doomsday Machine." The one shown in this video is Richard Datin's original proof-of-concept maquette, which was never intended as a filming model, but was called into service as such because the eleven foot model was not yet camera-ready. All but one of the Enterprise's appearances in "The Cage" are shots of the 33" mini; the eleven foot model -- called the 4X model because it's four times the size of this one -- is seen only in the "Approach" shot that opens the film. In the series title sequences, the 4x is the version seen in closeup, and the 33" is the one that whips past the camera when the cast list is shown.

    I don't think that it's the same one. The flexible microphone stand looks different, as well as the metal mounting base. Also, the wooden stand that it's mounted on is a completely different shape. The original one in the B&W Roddenberry picture has beveled edges if you look closely. I think the one on eBay could be a different model. Surely they made more than one model in case of accidents, etc.

    If that's a fake, it's the best fake I have ever seen. That paint looks 50 years old and cracked jut like I would expect. Also look at all the windows and other little bits. They appear to be perfect matches. If someone faked this, it was the work of at least 1500 hours and probably three tries.

    I don't think that it's fake, but I don't think that it was the original model that appeared in pictures on Gene Roddenberry's desk. It's an impressive model nonetheless. I'm curious to learn why the metal microphone stand, and the wooden base are different though (from the original B&W picture). It's an incredible find though. It wouldn't surprise me to learn that there were more than one of these in existence though. Don't most model companies make copies of models in case of accidents, or for use in other departments (or a variety of other ways)?

    “The Roddenberry Estate” or any of the other “Star Trek ReichsMarshals” can claim anything they want, but at the end of the day, the current owner is the current owner. PERIOD. It’s been a legend that it was “lent out, lost, misplaced OR (even perhaps) stolen”. There was no crime committed by the current owner and nothing was “stolen” (officially anyway). If the “Gods Of Star Trek” want that model, then the owner should be compensated based on MARKET VALUE. The law is very clear about something like this, and it would be a hard case if external parties wanted to try to reclaim the item thru legal intimidation or harassment. All the above said “Gods” have their fortunes, trademarks and copyrights that make them massive amounts of money every time an image of the BIG E is used for ANYTHING commercial. Compensate the owner fairly for what is rightfully his and let the ST Community enjoy this massive stroke of luck, and let the current owner enjoy his massive stoke of luck (and perhaps retire like Americans used to be able to do). Make it a “Win-Win” for all parties. Let’s not make this ugly, or something not worthy of the name “Star Trek”

    The law is very clear (in the USA). If an object is lent out for a finite time but never returned, it is stolen. If that is the case, whoever acquires it (if they are not the original person) has acquired stolen property. The image of a letter by Gene Roddenberry (at 1:51) highly suggests the model (if the original) was in fact stolen. If that is the case, the person selling it on ebay is entitled (legally) to nothing.

    Would be great if the finder got something. The entire Hollywood Memorabilia hobby is a "gray area" -- only in recent years, and in authorized auctions like the 70s MGM auctions, have studios released items. In fact, you could claim that everything of the original series, except the bridge given to UCLA, is "stolen". The treatment of every artifact of TOS as an historical relic has drawn big money into the hobby and made it impossible for fans to beat investors for items, as well as created difficulty in displaying what are now highly valuable pieces-- which require security and insurance. As great as this Enterprise is, it's really superfluous to the original eleven foot prop, which proudly rests in the Smithsonian. Hopefully, the effort to recover a 60 year old model will be matched by ensuring Star Trek maintains the themes Roddenberry developed as it goes on.

  • @LordZontar

    @LordZontar

    9 ай бұрын

    @@VF31Rules The law is also very clear that a statute of limitations exists for the crime of theft as well as the crime of receiving stolen property, running from 3-5 years depending upon the particular state laws involved. Those statutes for the taking of this item expired decades ago, and legal exceptions to that doctrine depend upon the application of due diligence by an original owner or the heirs to track down the item in question -- an issue that has arisen repeatedly in cases regarding the recovery of lost or stolen objets d'art. After 40+ years it would be difficult if not impossible, without considerable investigative effort, to establish the chain of custody for the model, the time at which it changed hands or how many times it had done so, when the eBay seller obtained it and which position in the chain of custody he occupied. A 1979 studio memo is not sufficient to fulfill that requirement. If the eBay seller has already sold it under the good faith assumption he was entitled to do so, he is entitled to his auction fee and the issue of title dispute then falls upon the purchaser.
