Remember when right before the 'cavalry' stormed thru, Oren came out of the hut and told Waldreg "I have something for you to do"? The cavalry charge was the diversion that shifted everyone's focus while Waldreg took the real black sword to open the floodgates!.

The editing smartly, makes it feel like the calvary arrives just as Adar is speaking to the old man. Making you forget about that scene. I thought Galadriel was going to open it when Halbrand walked off. But when all she did was wipe the blood off that I was like "Wait a minute. Why wouldn't she look at it?" And when Arondir got it back I knew I hadn't missed a least a reference to them unwrapping it. Which means something else was going on. Then I remembered that old man

One benefit i realized about the show creating its own characters like Arondir: you don't know, even if you know the lore, whether some characters will survive, since we don't know how much plot armor everyone will have. This episode i was legit worried for all the southlands characters. It was a nice feeling.

Yeah, I mean the show is pretty loose with canon in a lot of ways, but a lot of the "new" characters are not the problem. There's certainly room in Middle-Earth's history for lesser known characters like Arondir & Bronwyn. It's better to add in people like them for flavour, than to drastically change established canon characters.

The fights, the stunt work, the horses, the lighting and cinematography, the small character moments, the effects, but what stood out the most was the storytelling. At most, I'll occasionally make a positive comment here and there on reactions like yours. If I don't share that enthusiasm for something, I just move on and watch something else I do enjoy because I don't want to waste my time hate-watching it. Also, I just can't grasp the mindset of those who feel the need to piss on someone else's enjoyment just because they have a different opinion. Personally I think a lot of the channels that do that stuff just amp it up for what I call ragebait. Basically clickbaiting people with rage. And people either go to those videos to validate their own dislike of the show OR they get offended by the thumbnail/title and go there to rage at the video, either way it generates engagement. Whenever I see a video of such type show up in my recommendations I just put it on the "do not recommend this channel" and that's it, I'm done. Not giving them extra visibility by making angry comments on their video (which will lead to nothing but angry comments being shouted at me, thus again, cranking up the spiral of hate, whatever valid points people on both sides could have long lost), I'm just gonna filter them out. I'd rather come to channels like this one instead :D

I get that, to be honest I find that all these "Tolkien fans" are just using the show to vent their own issues. They have so much negativity, nothing is up to what they consider quality. They'll never understand that any adaptation from a book to a visual media will not be exactly as it was written. And also, we live in a golden age of book adaptation, never could I have imagined to see a big budget series based on the LotR trilogy books, let alone based on Silmarillion. I keep to reactors that just enjoy the material, sure, not all of this is canon like in the books, but come on, this is just an amazing show.

  • @vitaboy

I totally agree with what you said about “ragebait.” It’s a twisted version of clickbait and a lot of KZreadrs have embraced it where it’s become part of their formula. I’m the same as you. Doesn’t matter if it’s this shoe or She-Hulk or NuTrek. If I see a single ragebait thumbnail, I immediately remove that change from my recommendation. I don’t care if they later come back and say, “Ok maybe this episode wasn’t too bad.” They are living off raging and encouraging other people to rage, I don’t need to waste my time or emotional energy listening to spoiled children throw tantrums. There’s still a place for legitimate criticism but ragebait is not it. Just wish KZread could let you mute channels that appear in direct searches instead of an algorithmic feed you have no control over.

That ep was really a spicy meatball, wow, I'm stoked and in awe, of the writing, the actors, the tension build-up, everything. Reaction reflects the epic ep 100%. Uncut is always the best. Next epsiode: I think we will see a longer version of the scene from ep1, in which Galadriel said "You have not seen what I've seen" where we saw the bodies floating in red air and sky. We've thought that was a flasback but maybe it was a premonition of the aftermath of Mount Doom's outbreak. If that is so, Galadriel will at least get a glimpse of Sauron, just my few cents.

Miriel is not really created for the show. In she is in Tolkien's books, as she is here, the Daughter of Tar-Palantir, who is forced to marry Ar-Pharzon and he takes the throne from her when Palantir dies. The exile of Tar-Palantir and her acting as Regent is a creation of the show to fit their narrative. Though inspiration for that was pulled from other sources in the books as well.

It makes sense to me. Morgoth's evil is embedded into the very fabric of Arda and is associated with flame, rivers of lava, and poisonous smoke. While Sauron imbued the ring with his own energy I like to think the ring is a medium that draws on Morgoth's evil.

1:25 Udun is another name Utumno, one of Morgoth's ancient fortress's, so when Gandalf says "Flame of Udun", he's essentially saying Flame, or monster, of Morgoth/Morgoth's Kingdom (Udun is also the name of the valley that the Black Gate is located in, which is probably what the title is referring).

  • @stormcrowlu

Yes and no. Udun means "Hell" in Sindarin and was also used to describe both Mordor and Utumno, probably because both places were hell-like. Utumno however means "underworld", while Mordor means "dark lands". So I think here the reference is more towards Mordor (where the episode takes places, although it's still called Southlands at this time) and of course the explosion of Mount Doom at the end.

Unlike what has been happening in marvel shows on Disney± where everyone wants answers immediately, I'm enjoying the slower burn of this show. It's giving me just enough backstory with some action and great scenes of dialog that I have no doubt will pay off in later seasons. Really enjoying this show and what they've done with it so far

It's so nice to see people just enjoying the show here. Had a fun time watching your shocked reactions, exactly how I felt :D I'm loving the show so much. Like you said, on social media the loudest people form this general opinion that people then accept as what "everyone" thinks, when in fact probably majority of people's opinions are left out. So many people don't share their opinions online either, even if they're there. I'd also like to point out that Tolkien's work (none of it really) isn't suitable for TV/movie adaptation the way it is. The modern story telling style is very different from how Tolkien wrote things. He didn't really care about story telling I think, just about creating the world and its history and the characters and events came with it. So to make a good show you're gonna have to add and change things, and these people don't even have the rights to a lot of the source material from the second age. Yet they are doing a brilliant job.

Was invested before, but now? Oh yeah, I'm hooked. Too bad the first season is almost over. This is going to get so much bigger in the future and hopefully the wait won't be too long. Adar might ultimately have an honorable goal in mind: Keeping his Orcs from becoming enslaved by Sauron again. Halbrand might very well be Sauron himself. I was surprised he and Adar know each other. I think that sealed the deal for me. So, the Stranger HAS to be one of the five wizards, right? Gandalf would be a bit too obvious though or are they really going for that reveal? Still thinking this might be Saruman, given his affinity to also cause harm (even if unintentional) and his tall stature. Christopher Lee was a towering presence as well.

As a fairly big Tolkien nerd, I have been loving the show! And yes, this episode was epic, even before the eruption of Mt. Doom, which begins the transformation of the land to Mordor. I also agree that the negative loudmouth on social media are not necessarily representative of the general opinion for the wider audience. If you want to dive into how Tolkien’s lore and his overall themes, check out the KZread channel Rings and Realms. The Tolkien Professor, Corey Olsen, as someone who teaches courses on Tolkien, is producing a weekly video to dive into how each episode, and the show as a whole, is using Tolkien’s themes and lore. The show haters are accusing him of being an Amazon shill. But that is utter nonsense. He is not just praising every aspect of the show. But I really think each episode of Rings and Realms adds so much more to appreciate about each episode of the Rings of Power. I’m going to go back and check out your channel a little more as it sounds like you covered the Lord of the Rings movies sometime recently.

one thing that bothers me DEEPLY is the fact that they had so many chances to kill Adar and they never do, I understand he needs to live for the plot to unfold, and in this case he needed to be more of a in-the-shadows kind of leader instead of marching in the front with all the orcs, any archer in that damn tower would've stroke an arrow thru his face at first sight, like Adam said.

There's a guy on one of the review sites who keeps writing about how bored he is with this show, and after this episode especially, I have to wonder, What show is _he_ watching?? If you're bored, you're probably approaching this show with a lot of preconceived negative notions. I'm just at a loss to fathom all the incredible negative reaction this show has gotten. For my money, it's knocking it out of the park.
