The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King is a 2003 epic fantasy adventure film directed by Peter Jackson, based on the third volume of J. R. R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings. The film is the final entry in the Lord of the Rings trilogy and was produced by Barrie M. Osborne, Jackson and Fran Walsh, from a screenplay by Walsh, Philippa Boyens and Jackson. Continuing the plot of The Two Towers, Frodo, Sam and Gollum are making their final way toward Mount Doom in Mordor in order to destroy the One Ring, unaware of Gollum's true intentions, while Gandalf, Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli and the rest are joining forces together against Sauron and his legions in Minas Tirith. It was preceded by The Fellowship of the Ring (2001) and The Two Towers (2002).

Aragorn is, I think, the greatest image of the ideal man in fiction. He's strong He's a leader He's wise He's gentle when he needs to be He's harsh when he needs to be In a world where anti heroes are the norm now, it's always refreshing to see a truly good guy who isn't a wimp, or a "nice guy", or cannon fodder.

Maybe someone already said this. Someone usually does, but... The actor Christopher Lee who plays Saruman was a WW2 spy/assassin. Allegedly when Peter Jackson tried to direct him on how to play getting stabbed in the back, he took exception and said something like "Have you ever heard what a man sounds like when stabbed in the back, because I have." Lee was also a huge Tolkien fan and had read the trilogy every year since their publication.

1:50 "You're a liar... and a thief..." "No." _"Murderer..."_ Something to keep in mind: when Déagol found the Ring in the river, it was still in its "dormant" state. Yet it took Sméagol all of five seconds to jump on his cousin and murder him over it. Bilbo, meanwhile, carried it for sixty years without turning into a murderous psychopath. This says something about Sméagol's character, I think, before the Ring ever came to him. 4:15 "You've never done a hard day's work!" Well, Merry would know! Both Merry and Pippin are from very old, very wealthy, and very prominent families back in the Shire. They started out this story as bored rich kids getting into trouble for kicks. (The book is able to give them significantly more characterization and depth than what we get in the films.) 6:37 If you think the relationship between Gríma and Saruman is appalling _here,_ just wait until you read the book. Oof. Also, the phenomenal Christopher Lee was able to tell director Peter Jackson exactly what it sounds like when a man is stabbed in the back... 8:52 Elves can totally get drunk, but I think Gimli doesn't know that Legolas's father King Thranduil imports extremely potent wine from Dorwinion. The king's wine (and its effects on those with a lesser alcohol tolerance) was actually a minor plot point in the original book _The Hobbit._ In short, Legolas could hold his drink _a lot_ better than Gimli might have expected! 16:20 If you go back and rewatch _Fellowship,_ you might notice a sneak peek at Minas Tirith! It's the city where Gandalf went to look through all the scrolls to find the account of Isildur finding the One Ring. 17:30 Denethor gets a very different characterization from the book. John Noble is a wonderful actor and does a great job, but a number of book fans were frustrated at the changes.

Many of the movie versions are totally different than their book versions. The same goes for Smeagol. Many of the events as well. This series would have you believe that the journey Frodo and Sam took happened right after the birthday party for Bilbo. Not true. Frodo wasn't even living in Bag End when he started the journey. He had sold it and moved into a new home in Buckland at Crickhollow.

Yes. Denethor come across like a total jerk. But his story is more sad than angering. He was a good man, and a good ruler of Gondor. What the movie doesn't show is that he also had a palantir - one of those crystal ball things that Pippin looked into. And just like with Pippin, when Denethor tried you use his, he got the attention of Sauron, who showed him images to drive him to despair and madness. Imagine living across the street from Hell itself. And every day, you see their forces getting stronger. And the Enemy taunts you with knowledge that some ranger from the north is going to be king instead of you. And that your people are all going to die. And that your son is already dead. How long could you endure this and keep your courage? It's a common trope in this story: Otherwise good people becoming corrupted and driven to madness or evil. Denethor, Theoden, Saruman, Boromir, Frodo, Grima, even Smeagol (who wasn't necessarily that good of a person to begin with, but the influence of the ring made him far worse). And of course, Isildur in the back story. Did I leave anyone out? Some of them manage to escape the evil influence over them, and some do not. Saruman is the only one I can't find any pity for.

@@PhilBagels You left out Éowyn, actually, who was driven to despair in part by the machinations of Gríma. And Ted Sandyman, who willingly collaborated with Sharkey and his Men. And Denethor caused a little bit of civil insurrection by Beregond. I agree that most of these cases in the book are tragic more than anything else. Denethor was a noble man, stronger of will than even Saruman, who was ensnared by the same device, the palantir. Beregond was forced to kill his own comrades in order to come to the aid of his beloved captain. Éowyn saw only glory in death in battle, forgetting that an action is no less valorous or worthy for not being in the service of war. Ted Sandyman... well. He let his greed and vanity get the better of him.

In defense of Denethor, in the book he is quite majestic. When he confronts Gandalf he is seen to appear more wizardly than Gandalf to Pippin who does feel that Gandalf is actually the more majestic, “Denethor looked indeed much more like a great wizard than Gandalf did, more kingly, beautiful, and powerful;” (LotR, Minas Tirith). Denethor is like the Aragorn of the South, just as virile physically although Aragorn is more spiritually virile. The Steward Denethor has also been responsible and set up the defenses of Gondor contrary to his depiction in the movie as one sitting on his haunches. Not only are his armies prepared he himself is armed and ready to fight.

Let's not forget that the line of the Stewards was of the highborn blood of Numenor, if not of the line of Elendil. But as a direct descendent of Numenor, and legally ruling as steward, Denethor had a right (in the eyes of the Palantir) to use the Anor Stone. This gave him the possibility of using it if his will was strong enough not to be dominated by Sauron with the Ithil stone. In this fashion he outperformed Saruman, who was ensnared by his use of the Orthanc stone. I think that's the greatest part of the tragedy of Denethor - his perhaps desperate, if unwise, use of the stone and eventual wearing down of his spirit into despair when all that he had done to prepare Gondor to withstand the initial blow as best it could worked, and it ended up being sufficient enough to carry forward the hope for victory which he had lost.

And Haleth son of Hama was played by Calum Gittins, son of screenwriter Philippa Boyens. And the kid who stood over the fire with Haleth before Haleth spoke with Aragorn was the kid of Aragorn's actor Henry Mortenssen. There was also a cameo played by sister of Elijah Wood AFAIR Hanna - she is a tall blonde girl walking between ppl in the caves of Helms Deep for a few seconds. In "Hobbit" trilogy there were many such instances of kids of crew playing smt but the one I remember is that Kate Jackson played a barmaid in the inn of the prancing pony in the second part of "the hobbit".

Exactly, and it's also worth remembering how young they are. Pippin is basically a teenaged boy in Hobbit terms (which explains some of the crazy things he does), and Merry only a year or two older. As Merry said, Pippin always followed Merry around and Merry looked out for him...until this point.

So you know why Cirith Ungol has the stigma around it: (Faramir): "Of them we know only old report and the rumour of bygone days. But there is some dark terror that dwells in the passes above Minas Morgul. If Cirith Ungol is named, old men and masters of lore will blanch and fall silent." So basically it is unknown specifically why it is terrible, but it has such an impression that the very learned would stop whatever they were speaking of and have a moment of terror for what that name implies. I, of course, don't want to spoil anything, so I won't say more as to why it is a name filled with terror.

1:45 How you take the ring has a huge impact on its ability to corrupt you. Smegol took it by murder and it destroyed him utterly. Bilbo took it while sparing the previous owner despite having every reason to kill him. Frodo took it as an act of love for his uncle. The latter two were much harder for the ring to corrupt. But especially Bilbo. From the first second the ring whispered in his ear to kill Gollum and not only did he spare Gollum but he started out as he would continue, defying the will of the ring. He held it for 60 years and even after all that time he managed to willingly part with it, with only verbal prodding from Gandalf.

18:09 This is one my favorite scenes in the whole trilogy. Not only cause they say the name of the movie in the movie, but for other reasons. Denethor is a *Steward* of Gondor. Not a *King* of Gondor. There hasn't been a Gondorian King for centuries. Not since Eärnur, ancestor of Aragorn, rode to Minas Morgul to answer a challenge from the Witch-King of Angmar, never to return. The Stewards were once assistants to the King, but when the line was "broken" they became the interim authority. Boromir is initially distrustful of Aragorn in the Fellowship due to this disconnect between the fallen monarchy and the line of stewards. However, while Denethor has the authority to rule as a regent waiting for the next King, as his father and ancestors have done for so long, he cannot deny their return should it happen. No more than someone who house sits can deny entrance to the home's owner. Watching Gandalf remind Denethor of his place is very satisfying. Especially since movie Denethor is just kind of a dick for no reason.

In fairness to Elrond, if my kid was doing something where suddenly their lifespan was going from potentially infinite to like Maaaaaaaybe 100 years, which must be like the blink of a eye to him, I'd try to talk them out of it pretty strongly too. I don't care how nice Aragorn is, you're gonna die! or be miserable forever after he dies if you stay immortal! lol Plus, I'm not a Tolkien expert, but I think that means they go to a different afterlife too right? Because the undying lands is basically elf heaven right? Kinda sorta? idk, Tolkien scholars (Nicely) correct me in the comments below lol. Yes, Legolas sneaked Gimli in on a boat. There's a theory that Galadriel vouched for him at the other end. I like to think she would have introduced him to Finrod and Aulë. Yes, elves and humans have a different afterlife (and elves resurrect from theirs back to Valinor), so Arwen would never have seen her mother Celebrian again, as Celebrian would have expected after she left for Valinor.

Everyone seems to miss something very important... Bilbo had the ring for 50+ years, and it hardly corrupted him at all. Frodo had the ring for weeks if not months, carrying it to its strength in Mordor, and was only slowly corrupted. Smeagol sees the rings and in a matter of minutes becomes a fratricide. It's a matter of character; or lack thereof. Smeagol, unlike Frodo and Bilbo, was a piece of sh* before he ever got the ring.

A lot of it is due simply to having to adapt the books to film, but man did Peter Jackson do Denethor and Faramir dirty. In the books, Denethor didn’t fall to despair until the final stages of the battle, but up until then he had conducted a brilliant defense of the city - and also, he had the beacons lit himself, well, before the fighting began. And Faramir similarly showed excellent leadership, including conducting a disciplined fighting retreat from Osgiliath - and notably, did not charge stone buildings with horses like an idiot. The Witch-King was an excellent general with overwhelming forces and the soul-sucking morale effects of the Nazgûl, which is why despite Denethor and Faramir doing everything right, they still needed the Rohirrim and reinforcements from the rest of Gondor to win the day.

Having a weird thought about the ring. For the longest time I always wondered why the ring made you invisible. It's like, what is this like a super power or something? But I realize now, once you put it on, you no longer exist as a person. You're blanked out of existence. And the reason there was ever a drive of self motive was to keep you within nothingness because it is you yourself who keeps you and you will never get out. The thirst for power and to be in control is everyone's drive, but it dooms you into a life forever wanting.

  • @kateiannacone2698

So the reason Pippin looked into the Palantir is a lot clearer in the books than in the movie. First off, yes, you're right. There is a magical compulsion similar to that of the ring, but like the ring, it preys on what's already in your head. In Pippin's case, he's a Took. And the Took family is naturally curious and adventurous. So of course, he wants to know what the shiny object is. But also, after convincing the Ents to go to battle, Merry and Pippin were just starting to see their own value and realize that, small though they may be, they can actually contribute and not just be in the way. They helped overthrow Saruman. Not Aragorn or Gandalf or anyone else in the Fellowship, and they were proud of that. But when Gandalf, Aragorn, Gimli, Legolas, Theoden, and Eomer came, they greeted them, and then went off to handle all the important things, leaving Merry and Pippin to just wait for them to do it. They felt brushed aside, taken for granted, and patronized. So when Pippin (who, mind you, is literally just a kid. He's the Hobbit equivalent of a 16 year old) found the Palantir, he was proud of himself and believed he was helping (which he was). But then Gandalf told him "Peregrine Took! I'll take that, my lad. Quickly now!" Without explaining anything about it. He didn't tell him what it was or why it was dangerous. So Pippin got really annoyed and bitter. He was frustrated with being condescended and with Gandalf in particular for keeping so many secrets. It's kind of the equivalent of a parent telling a child no, and when they ask why, the parent just says "Because I said so." That was what the magic was feeding into to compel Pippin to look, and on the ride to Minas Tirith, he and Gandalf talked it out and apologized to each other, which I thought was great. Each one accepted accountability.

I grew up with these movies, and when I was a kid I had to ask my mom to skip the beginning of the third movie, It was f*cking terrifying as a kid, I can to this day remember the feeling I got from watching it, you know when you're so terrified and scared that you just sit there and stare... It's not the fully ''transformed'' Gollum that scared me, it's when he's about to transform, and the music on top of that (a f*cking masterpiece) it f*cked me up xD I'm almost 29 now, and I still feel shivers down my spine watching it haha. 2:17 What might be kind of misleading to some, Is that Smeagol isn't INSTANTLY teleported to where we see him after he puts on the ring. He actually went back home, but were banished by his people (more specifically his grandmother the matriarch).

Hi Maple. Love the reaction. I’m late to the game, but remember the ring sat at the bottom of the river for 2500 years, so it’s power was very potent. Smeagle and Deagle were cousins, mischievous, and little thieves, not unlike Merry and Pippin. Which makes you shutter to wonder. It was Smeagle’s birthday and his desire to have it as a birthday present got manipulated and grossly distorted inside Smeagle and he killed his cousin. I try to remember that and not judge Smeagle too harshly. I hope that way lays your feelings about Smeagle. Well Gollum is another story. 😉💕🇨🇦

The Stoors lived near the human settlements around the great river Anduin - its the same river the Fellowship cross by boats. And they were mostly fishermen. But most of that 3 clans emigrated west for the land later called the Shire which was given to them around 15 centuries before the LOTR time by Argeleb II, king of Arnor (the northern kingdom, as Gondor is the southern one) AFAIR as an award for their services as archers in one of the wars with Angmar (the land ruled by Nazgul). But some of the Stoors clan eventualy returned east for whatever reason I dont know :) The main "elite families" of the Shire like Tooks, Pippins family is said to be descended from the bravest and most talented clan of Fallohides. Who of all hobbits were most similar in apearance and charachter to elven folk. Thats why some of them even could've looked more like Frodo than for example like Smeagol and Deagol :)

Pippin was desperate to look into the Palantir just once more because it's full of youtube reaction vids. Can't say I blame him.
