I was worried but im LOVING it. While it may not reinvent the genre, it has a beautifully crafted world and the vibes are on point for lotr. That alone makes it worth playing as the survival base gameplay loop is as fun as ever and with the lotr "skin" having been created so carefully and authentically, the game shines.

Years and years ago I was playing LOTRO. It was still fresh at the time and one of the first big expansions they did was adding whole of Khazad-Dum and the surrounding area in Mines of Moria expansion. It was huge, it was amazing and it was full of stuff to do and explore. From the Doors of Durin to Bridge of Khazad-Dum to Depths of Moria, it had many levels, layers, chambers, passages, caves and halls. And it was one, continouous, massive in scale and scope play area. No instances, no loading screens. I can't even begin to tell you how jaw dropping felt when you entered it for the first time. If that game captures even a glimpse of that feeling I will play it.

was thinking the same thing! i first played lotro right when Moria was released. some people think it's literally hell, but it was so sophisticated and so diverse, it was a great experience.

After binging the game for a good 9hrs last night, I have found some references to the main antagonist from the main quest for Moria in LOTRO and I found where we were on LOTRO's map of Moria! So definitely a good vibe. I am tempted to put on the Moria expansion OST while I play

I think one reason we don't see large projects for LOTR games might be that most would be reluctant to touch the IP. Anyone who tries knows there's a 50% chance they are going to be crucified by the fanbase if they mess up. A grand game would need a grand story, and without recognizable characters it probably be financially unviable, and messing with well established characters has an even higher chance of pissing off the fans. So a game like this is a way let players enter the fantasy without messing with the lore too much, they're playing it safe and they're right to do so.

I mean I can already tell you that the game isn't faithful to the lore in a few ways, Gimli wasn't the one who recolonized Khazad Dum, it was Durin the 7th who reclaimed the city, and Gimli treats Durin the 7th with a somewhat irreverent attitude which is very strange considering his legendary and even religious status amongst durins folk. I mean its minor details, and if its a real good game then I'm able to overlook a few minor lore breaks. Also the version of Khuzdul you hear in the game isn't Tolkien's, Tolkien famously left the khuzdul language unfinished because within universe dwarves keep their sacred language secret from outsiders, the version of Khuzdul you hear in the games was constructed by David Salo for the Hobbit movies, using what few words Tolkien gave us to base his language off of. BONUS FUN FACT: Tolkien's khuzdul was based off Semitic languages such as Hebrew, he imagined dwarves as having more of a Levantine accent, not Scottish accents. not trying to bitch, just pointing out minor inaccuracies and fun facts, probably going to still give the game a shot since I'm a massive LOTR nerd and dwarves are my favorite race.

@@carsonnesbit1178 The game takes place in the 4th age, about 70 years after the destruction of the One Ring. There is nothing in the lore that I recall that says nobody tried to reclaim Moria after Balin's attempt. The Lord of the Rings Online MMO also has dwarves attempting to retake Moria post-Fellowship. It is a common desire, as nothing in the legendarium has as much mystique surrounding it as Moria. Everyone wants to take a look inside and explore.

@@kythian yes, but in the lore it is mentioned that the dwarves did reclaim Khazad Dûm, and it was specifically mentioned that Durin the 7th was the one who reclaimed the city and led the effort. This is in line with dwaven prophecy, there were to be 7 Durins, the last Durin is supposed to usher in the last golden age of the dwarves before they begin to slowly disappear from middle earth. This is all to say, you can depict other dwarves trying reclaim the city prior to Durin the 7th, but those attempts have to be a failure otherwise it would break the lore. And it gets dicey because they’re using Gimli as the leader in all this, and there is no lore that ever mentions Gimli going back to Khazad Dûm. And like I was saying, I didn’t like how they were portraying Gimli’s attitude towards Durin, he had an attitude that screamed: “Well if Durins not going to take the city, then I will, now is the time!” No dwarf would ever treat Durin with such irreverence, he is the reincarnated father of their race. He is a king as well as a religious figure, Gimli should only ever talk about Durin with nothing but the utmost respect. Because every dwarf is aware of the prophecy, every dwarf knows that it is ordained that Durin the 7th will retake the city. EDIT: also some dwarves were calling Khazad Dûm “Moria” which irks me. They would only ever use the name “Moria” for the benifit of outsiders. But amongst fellow dwarves, they would only call the city by its sacred Khuzdul name, not it’s elvish name.

I've been waiting for this release ill get it Friday. And I agree not enough people talking about it.

I think the character creation is probably one of the better ones to come forward. There are some games that have extremely robust character creators and it ends up feeling like overwhelming, 9/10 I personally just always randomize. But, this is more manageable. I can actually see myself putting time into it without feeling overwhelmed.

i was unsure on this game to start then when i started playing for the first time at around 3pm in the afternoon and then wondered why it was getting light outside as i was playing realising id played through till 8am in the morning i new this game was good you never no whats around the next corner

this is so nice

ok, things you missed; the siege is two waves of three. they are also on a timer, so if you can make a base they can't reach they will time out and disappear. given enough time they will break your stuff but don't seem to steal anything. you don't get xp in this game and they drop no loot as far as i can tell so finding a spot they can't reach you is ideal. don't forget to fix all the statues, you will find out why when you do it. get a repair bench as soon as possible or carry two axes early on. been playing since release today, having a blast so far.

I also really hope this game succeeds. I've enjoyed my first few hours.

Not sure about dwarven planning, you should cover the powder barrels with sandbags to make sure the blast went where you intended it to go. Intersting video though, a game I'd not heard of so worth watching, thanks.
