THE LONGEST RIDE: SC Education Board blesses "shameful" special needs school bus regulation

THE LONGEST RIDE: A SC school district & the SC Department of Education paid $2.5M to settle two lawsuits after non-verbal children were attacked more than 100 times on a bus in 2018. There was no other adult on the bus, aside from the driver.
Rep. Richie Yow drew up a bill that would've forced SC school districts to put an adult aide on every special needs bus with restrained children. The SCDOE killed Yow's bill in Feb.
The SCDOE put up a regulation suggesting districts use an adult aide on special needs buses "if" an aide is available. On June 13, the state Board of Education voted to pass first reading of that regulation.
The reason the SCDOE won't mandate aides: if an aide calls in sick, children will be stranded at schools or would never get to school in the first place.

I would love to ask to people that are trying to stop this bill. How would they feel if their child was on the bus and their child was the one that was beat? You cannot put a price on a child that's disabled God-bless those children.

Their children aren't on these busses so they don't care. They're narcissists and psychopaths. They care about themselves and their own. Gov is full of them.

Its painfully obvious that as long as its not one of their children it's okay for it to happen. I think they are just making excuses as to why they can not make it happen. Why not use a grandparent or someone just looking to get out of the house for a few hours a day to ride on these buses. But something tells me they aren't even think outside the box to make it work so that no one else gets hurt.

So their going to still put vulnerable kids at risk even though they know there's a risk their going ahead with it? Wow that puts the whole state at risk of a lawsuit when another child gets hurt.

Driver has to be paying attention to the road and it's actually against policy/law for them to stop anywhere except designated pickup/dropoff points ...in the one clip if you look close driver is loading student in wheelchair and can't just let go of the chair ...I have a grandchild who rides a special needs bus and it ALWAYS has attendant and driver on it to ensure safety of everyone on the bus

@@grouchyoleguy I get that he has to watch the road. But 200 times! Certainly he saw and heard something. He could have told the parents their daughter is punched in the face every day by an animal. Could have told the boys parents that he is violent and dangerous to other children. Could have told the school about the abuse. Institutional abuse. Nothing changes until someone stands up for the defenseless. Meanwhile this will continue until another meeting months away? Horrifying! Shameful!

@@grouchyoleguy of course I don’t know if he did or did not do any those things. The problem is that it happened so many times. If a bus driver told me my daughter was being punched in the face, she would not be riding the bus any more. Hard for me to believe the parents would have put her back on that bus, as if they didn’t care. The driver didn’t notice? Is that what you think? She’s screaming and that turd is moving around punching her. I’ve driven a school bus. Don’t tell me he didn’t know. The district, school, driver can share responsibility.

Does the bus driver have no control of what is happening on the bus? When there is a disruption, (or beating), the driver is to pull off to the side of the road and get on the 2 way radio and request assistance.

They can bring a substitute teacher in to work as an aide on the bus. The same as a substitute for the class. The aide does not need a CDL to drive the bus.

This is sadism at its finest towards minors with autism. Substitute or standard bus driver, the bus driver should've pulled over and immediately called transportation via the radio to request assistance. I have autism, ADHD, and a generalized anxiety disorder and was actually bullied and/or harassed at Herndon Middle School and APTS. Even Amtrak won't tolerate this abusive behavior on their trains or Thruway shuttles
