The Long Drag . The hard climb from Carlisle to Aisgill summit .

With the Settle & Carlisle line due to re open on the 31st of March after the major landslip at Eden Brows I decided to put together footage taken over the last seven years covering the climb from Carlisle to Aisgill summit . A tough climb that would severely test the crew and loco . Apologies for the poor edit at 32-43 .

Steve, you've excelled yourself! What a wonderful anthology of superb filming. Loved the bit where cattle flee the train in both directions. I was intrigued by the location at 19.00 which looked totally outside anywhere I have ever been. Anyway, great stuff, and a "look again" marker!

each scene is bliss. As if nothing else in the whole world mattered. simply waiting for steam, the sound of birds the cool breeze. how I love the gallop thst only a 3 cylinder loco can produce. a shame Green Arrow is not running. i think the v2 just sounded so good i think your last scene at 38 m 20 sec would be the penultimate scene. i think it sums up steam and the landscape to perfection. It doesnt get any better than this. I just cant imagine anything better

What a compilation and sorry I've not commented before and that last scene summed it up so beautifully I know it sounds corny, but who back in '68 would have thought it possible to see scenes like that in the 21st century? Or even in the mid-1980s before someone suddenly discovered that the cost of repairing Ribblehead Viaduct was only one third of the original estimate? Many MANY thanks for all the hard work you put in to producing these videos and to all those involved in running these wonderful trains!

My Collies & I have walked the S&C many times over the years & can recognise most of these locations. In fact at 28:32 Birkett Common the Collie barking was mine, Jack. mnic1234 brings back happy memories of a special journey made to Chester in the 70s to see the GW Vintage Train and I think, KGV or 6201. In which days, wooden coaches were still permitted on the national network. Then the policy changed and the pre- War coaching stock was banished forever.Huge shame because the rake they assembled was very elegant indeed.Alistair

The second coach in the rake at 23:00 is particularly unusual. I didn't even realise there was a single pre-nationalisation coach main line certified but this GWR coach proves me wrong and it extremely refreshing to see! Does anyone have any more information on this, or any other -pre-nationalisation vehicles certified for main line running (excluding the VSOE stock!)?

Might be a daft question - they’re climbing those banks and the pistons are going like mad, yet they’re not really going anywhere. Why not treat it like a car and go slower, but with more power?

Wooooowww..., I've never seen such a stunning video footage in my whole life about railways on youtube. Fantastic video report about the most beautiful line in northern England, my opinion. Please never close this line while I am still alive, use it as much as possible for diversionary moves instead transfere passengers onto coaches and board them again on trains as seen on last West Coast Mainline blockade.

union of south africa steam engine, can do this clime at speed, no problem, but apparently she needs a new boiler, & they say it isen,t worth while, so it sits idle in some museum in bury, its begger,s belief how some people,s minds work, to me if it needs a new boiler, then it should definatly have one, no questions asked
