I remember when hundreds of steam engines were lined up at Kingmoor sidings in Carlisle, waiting to be scrapped. Buildings used to be black, with the soot & smoke belched - out by steam engines. Trees used to be blackened & died. It took over ten years before they began to recover from the pollution & began to lose their black oily patina.

Great bit of film,takes me back, to my trainspotting days in the 60's.

And in her black 2ed world war livery what a lovely piece of engineering she is ;-)

This used to run the London to Edinburgh East Coast mainline. 50 years later it has turned up at Carlisle, no wonder, the driver must have lost his way.

It sure put on a show for the people .

These steam engines are great show-offs. Even before starting he huffs as if saying “out of the way you cretin” and then he puffs more saying “here I come, see my majesty come” and that’s all he does. He has no strength for anything else.

What is it about trains that we find so fascinating? The brut force? The durability? The reliability?

That was nothing. In the workshop you have to weesh loudly just to be heard.

Wartime livery. Later got numbered 60103 when going BR(?) green.

The NRM should have decided between 502 and 103 and painted both sides, having a different number depending on what side you look at it is awkward. I would have voted 103, since it's more an "official" number than 502, but 502 would be more accurate to Wartime Black.

I can almost smell the smoke and oil through the screen!!

There is no oil other than what's used to lubricate certain parts. He runs on coal and water.

Personally I think they have ruined its appearance with the German Deflectors, it has ruined the front, it looks like any old frieght engine now-sad to see.

I think this isn't flying Scotsman. Flying Scotsman is green and sounds even better. Also he has bigger diameter on the driving wheels. This is a black 5 an lms design I think, one of Williams, instead of lner. Sorry for any mistakes, I'm from Greece, I just love British steam locomotives since I was 4 more than I should. I'm 18 years old now and the same love goes on. I wish I could drive on of them.

an a10/a3 making a spectacle? who are they and what have they done to a monotonouse, boring, ugly, dirty, unreliable gresley pacific?

Beautiful engine, but why do British whistles sound so pathetic. My freaking dog toy could make the same sound
