    Hi everyone. The response to my first video honestly blew me away; thank you so much to everyone who watched, subscribed, and left nice comments. Be assured that I read every single one. I've seen a fair few people wondering what exactly the plan for this channel is going to be, and frankly I'm just as in the dark as everyone else; I'm really winging it here. For now, all I can say is that I'll be making videos about things that I like and want to share with others, primarily games but almost certainly branching out, and I hope you enjoy what I put out there. (Apologies to those that followed hoping for exclusively Hollow Knight content, but there's no way I can stay that focused on a single topic. I'll be back to that well when Silksong comes out, I'm sure) Thank you again, hope you like the new video

    One of the things that I really loved, and gave me that moment, was when I tried to have Solanum "explain" "identify", and she talked about how understanding and learning were the two core tenants of the Nomai way of life. Curiosity was the core of their culture and their people, just the same as it is for humans, and the hearthians. Even the bug people in the true ending shot are portrayed in a way that is clearly meant to make a connection to the Hearthians, implying they too also have the same core ideas. Whether they are aliens, or literal humans, what makes someone "human"(for lack of an all-encompassing term) is a desire to learn and understand, and a desire to share that knowledge with friends and family.

    Science fiction brings you to the end of what is both imaginable and unimaginable. It takes you to the edge of the universe, and asks you why you wanted to get there. It gives you a chance to experience wonder again. It lets you have hope in hopeless times.

    This is... one of the best video essays on Outer Wilds and somehow, you just.. managed to tell everything about this game exactly s I felt while playing. You captured the same joy and terrors I felt (so many new sound fears acquired), and this whole video resonated with me on a very very deep level, just as the game had. I am stunned and have tears in my eyes (partly from the music, but mostly because opf the essay) after watching. Thank you very much for making this amazing video and doing justice to the game. Special mention a-core-dingly goes for 22 min time of the video, Bramble=terror-induced-memes, and final ost being the End Times

    This isn't really related to the video but I wanted to share one of my favorite moments in Outer Wilds(spoilers) The moment I discovered the tower of quantum trials was so exciting. I hadn't got the hint that the only giant cyclone on giant's deep had something in it, so I only went in when I pulled out the signalscope and checked the quantum signals frequency. The moment I got inside filled me with such wonder. What could this tower be? What was its importance? What can it tell me? At this point in the game, I had thought I had seen everything. I explored every planet extensively, and was wrapping up some larger mysteries. Even if I hadn't seen something, I had an idea of what it looked like and where it was(Like the Vessel and ATP). But this tower came out of nowhere. For the very first time in a long time with this game, I was completely thrown into that new player experience of awe at just what could be out there. It was exhilarating

  • @treyslider6954

    I'd also like to share a profound moment from playing the game. Spoilers below Through my exploration, I'd figured out that the Ash Twin Project was at the center of things. I'd barely paid any attention to quantum phenomenon in the system up to this point, and the closest I'd gotten to any quantum secrets was Solanum's ship on Brittle Hollow. I'd been exploring the Ash Twin, trying to find my way inside, for a couple loops at this point, as I expected that "the answers" would be there, that there'd be something in there that was broken, which I would fix to get me safely out of the time-loop. I still hadn't been to the Sun Station, and I thought I would find, in the Ash Twin Project, a way to stop the sun from exploding. And so, after finally finding my way inside, I was concerned by how empty it was. There was nothing here, save records of many conversations I'd already read from the other side...and then the core of the project itself. And, as I opened it up and saw the fully-functioning core in the middle, I finally realized I had it backwards: I wasn't here to fix the Ash Twin Project. I was here to break it. And just like Mezzemine describes in the video, I had to pause the game and walk away for a bit while I processed that and everything it implied.

    I stumbled upon your Hollow Knight video and after watching that one, decided to check out if you had made any others. I'm glad I did. Hollow Knight is a game I'm currently playing myself, I'm already familiar with a lot of the themes, design, lore, etc. I know on some level what makes the game great. I really enjoyed the video and the jokes sprinkled throughout. This game though, I had not heard about until today. And I still really enjoyed the video. I watch a lot of this type of, game analysis content? Media essays? I'm not sure how to describe it. But what makes you stand out from all the others I watch, is in how you allow the audience to get immersed into the story you're telling as well as the game. The way you use your pauses and let the game atmosphere speak for itself, the music underscoring the mood, the amount of attention to detail both in what you decide to share and in the editing, it's incredible. You don't just let your words do all the work, you manage to let the game speak for itself. And that's really valuable. Anyway, thank you for sharing your work. I genuinely hope that it brings you joy and that you don't feel (too much) pressure from the sudden influx of people who were desperate for more Hollow Knight content and decided to stick around haha

    I saved your Hollow Knight video ages ago waiting for after I played the game, and I finally got around to it just recently and watched your video earlier today. It was an excellent video, and I was delighted to see you had made a video on Outer Wilds as well, my favorite game ever. I find I still have to close my eyes when our friends from Dark Bramble come out of nowhere, but I realized watching this video, cowering in fear, that me closing my eyes is not due to me being unable to overcome this fear, it is to retain it. I realized I never want the universe of Outer Wilds to die within me, and if I lose that fear, I lose a part of the wonder and curiosity that is so vital to Outer Wilds. So, I will continue to fear anglerfish, and will continue to listen to the soundtrack as I contemplatively observe the cosmos, for I want to retain the wonderment that I felt on my first day waking up by the campfire, looking up at the stars.

    I like all planets in the game apart from dark bramble. In the other planets their hazards tend to be either easily avoidable, a minor step back, or both. But in dark bramble you are instantly killed and it can discourage you from exploring the planet again. This leads to blaming the game whenever when you die in dark bramble, instead of blaming yourself for a mistake you make in another planet.

    Can you tell me what mic/ programs you use to mix your voiceover audio? Like, if it's audacity do you add eq and compression or do you just record and drop it into the video editor and add nothing? Anything at all you can tell me would be great!

  • @Mezzamine

    @Mezzamine

    3 жыл бұрын

    Hey, sorry for the super late response! I record with an AT2020 mic using Logic Pro on my laptop. I don't have a studio or anything, just my living room and a few cushions behind the mic. I add some EQ, a bit of reverb and some compression (along with a few other plugins to help remove clicks, crackles etc) - the specific plugins and DAW don't really matter honestly so much as fiddling with settings and plugin order until you get a fuller and cleaner sound - I imagine you'd be able to get much the same effect with Audacity, but the editing tools are a bit reduced and I'm used to Logic. Check the playback on both headphones and speakers until you have something that works to your satisfaction. Once I've recorded a few takes of the voiceover I stick it in Adobe Premiere where I do the video editing. I'm not good enough to do everything in one smooth take so frequently I cut takes together, add / remove pauses, or find out that I need to completely re-write and record a segment. I'd say that each video's vocal track has about 4-5 different takes spliced together. (Probably also worth mentioning that I have a 'radio voice' that I use for recording - my regular speech pattern is about twice as fast and a fair bit more disjointed so I have to slow down and really focus on my pronunciation - a background in student radio helped me there) Hope that helps a bit, any further questions do let me know. Again, sorry it's so late!

    @@shvlking1578 It's a light touch. Only about a 2:1 ratio on around a -10 threshold, with a medium length attack and release. Just enough to take the edge off any excess peaks. One thing I forgot to mention is that I do a final bit of volume tweaking in premiere afterwards - once the voice / music channels etc are balanced I use adobe's standard mastering plugin on the master bus - very light settings though, nothing more than a few % points. Most of the presets are waaay too strong, I just want to use it to glue everything together. The final volume level in the mixer averages just above -6dBs

    @@Mezzamine Have you thought about making some sort of audio tutorial for people wanting to get into the video essay genre? I feel like it would help out the community a lot because most of them aren’t very good or have a decent final sound like yours does.

    @@shvlking1578 Interesting idea, certainly! I'll think on it. Probably worth getting a few more videos under my belt first - I'm still learning new things constantly myself and this channel's only just started - but if there's enough interest I'll always be happy to help out others.
