As a few critics pointed out, one of the reasons we ANIMATE animals, is that real photorealistic animals are capable of very few facial expressions. That’s going to hurt the overblown 90’s Katzenberg-era melodrama a bit.

When they animated the original lions they studied lions up close. When they animated this movie they assumed lions were stoic and only selected footage that suited that perception. Making an animated lion pin their ears back when they are scared or angry, is not applying human emotions to an animal. It's literally just what lions do when they feel that way. But in this movie they make their ears barely move outside when they flick them for 'realism.' Clearly they only observed sleepy lions if this is the only emotion they got out of them. The only two human facial movements you cannot apply to lions is puckering your lips and showing the whites of your eyes.

@@demo2823 Lions and tigers also have this burning fire in their eyes when they fight one another that always fascinated and scared me. I saw one of the most stunning tigers once, and the way it looked through the fence you could feel the danger just from the glint of those golden eyes. They're magnificent creatures, but oddly the lions in this film don't really have that energy. I was hoping to see that fire burning in Scar's eyes.

Either that or have actual people dressed up as the animals, not so much that you can’t tell they’re humans, but enough that you can tell what animals they are supposed to be, that would have been interesting.

Shenzi _is_ the leader of the hyenas in the original as well, but she's just a little smarter than the rest and her status as a leader of the whole clan is much less noticeable as she's just shown to be with the other two. Spotted hyenas are interesting animals, because for some reason they're super matriarchal: females are bigger and stronger and males are always much lower in rank than them (even baby females have more authority,) so Shenzi being a more active and competent leader here reflects that. I like that little realism, since the lions are also shown a little more realistically than your average animal story with their pride mostly consisting of females and one or couple males. In real life, hyenas are smart social animals who are an important part of the real circle of life and one of the criticisms of the og movie was the way they were _all_ portrayed as stupid barbarians and automatically evil (while it didn't include the hyenas themselves, maybe the second movie's "we are one" message was made partially because of that.) This is also addressed in the newer Lion Guard show, where there are good hyenas despite the lions originally thinking they're all bad. One of the biggest criticisms (well, among many) of this remake is the way they completely removed Rafiki hitting Simba's head to teach him that past may hurt but you can learn from it. Like that was one of the major messages of the og story. I guess the movie creators thought it wasn't "serious" enough.... I also noticed they made kid Simba much less of a little shit and he is innocent in a more cutesy way here, probably because he looks so adorable to us human viewers now. The big part of his character as a child was that he was full-of-himself and wanted to be a king to do whatever he wants (kind of like certain _other_ lion....) Speaking of him, yeah, Scar is much more serious. I think they did that partially to make the movie more "serious" and partially to avoid queer-coding. In the past, Disney villains were quite often given stereotypical gay traits like flamboyance and sassiness and more "feminine" body language and diva mannerisms. In fact, Scar and some others were designed by a gay man. However, in later years, there's been more criticism for making villains like that, so I think Disney wants to avoid that now...even though LOTS of gay people LOVE these Disney villains and simply would like to have non-evil gay characters too. And like you said, the music and singing isn't as strong in this one. Like it's notably softer and it doesn't help that the visuals are also much duller. The one with the most oomph is the new modern song they included.

  • @solezeta1314

There's a room for creativity in the animation medium that can't be recreated with the live action. The romance, the feelings, the magic of animation just can't be recreated, and I think that this is something important that we should all know. I've noticed that in a lot of Disney's animations, they can add in a lot of different elements for romantic scenes, they can work with the coloring, movements, expressions, the surroundings to create the effects that they want, but with the real life action, it just feel lifeless and lacking the beauty of the original ones. You can animate animals, but putting those animals into live action remakes just wouldn't work because they're all CGI and looks so bad.

A few little things were added that weren’t in the original, but it doesn’t feel like enough to differentiate it from the original animated one. Whereas something like 2016 Jungle Book feels like it’s own thing, it takes elements from the animated version, but it also gives the audience something new in return. Watching it in the theaters greatly helped to make it happen. But then again, I hate what they did with Scar, and especially with how Be Prepared was reduced to basically nothing. this remake was a lot like having your favorite soda flat and room temp. Yeah, it's the same ingredients, but they traded the bright, colorful animation and the comedic warmth the og voice-acting brought ( the fizz!) for pristine cgi and vocal gymnastics (new look, same great taste!) Without that bright energy to contrast the drama, it wasn't nearly as impactful. But hey, some people enjoy flat room temp soda.

For me, the live action was excellent and I liked it, about the changes, they weren't so bad and some things improved: 5:33 Mufasa had also said a very wise phrase: "while one only seek what can take, a true king seeks what he can offer" 12:07 this time Scar took Simba to practice his roar at the canyon to impress his father 13:27 I loved how they gave Mufasa and Simba one last interaction during the stampede, plus the heroic music that played there, as if making you believe that everything could end well 15:07 Scar's accusations were much more serious and really break 16:31 Scar went out of his way by feigning pain about it and lying that he wishes he had made it to the canyon in time to save them. 15:35, 16:38 Yes, Simba's escape through the desert is well animated, it saddened me and made me go deeper that he escaped into the desert "being just a little boy": his expression very tired from the heat and hunger, plus the desert landscape and that sad background music, I can't imagine how it would have been in the cartoon yeah, it is a great lesson: "What can be changed is the future and to do so, you must first leave the past behind" "the past can no longer be changed" yes, they were very honest with that 21:10 Nala's escape in search of help was great as a moment of heroine, plus Zazu's help, their characters did improve 21:50 yeah, I like how Timon and Pumbaa are the ones who are not afraid of Simba; although they lived idly, Simba was still good at heart, thanks for emphasizing it 23:16yes they both mocked and that loud, but at least they repented 24:40Great that Simba's lock of mane reached Rafiki through the circle of life 27:33 when Simba says he doesn't need any more friends or anyone, he never did, it really broke my heart, it reflect he was really lost and broken 28:30, 28:50, 28:59 I was very moved by those lines by Mufasa, expressing his love for his son and that he never left him nor will he; and much more when Simba says "I am Simba son of Mufasa", and proudly launches that roar and runs catching up with Nala; plus Timon and Pumbaa follow him without anyone explaining anything to them and they will help him because he is their friend 31:56again his accusations are that serious, Scar made him a more manipulative, cold and deceitful villain; well even he falls for the lies 32:42the final fight was the most epic, plus Simba ascending the throne after defeating Scar

Tim Frankly the lion king 2019 remake is not live action it's a CGI photorealistic remake of the original 1994 animated classic it was about 1.163 billion dollars at the box office the animation and the scenery looks so gorgeous I went to see it at the Alamo Drafthouse with my mom and sister back in 2019 after the live action Aladdin, I've highly recommend for you to react to 2016s live action the jungle book also directed by Jon favreau.

I have a love/hate relationship with this movie. The visuals are absolutely stunning...the compositions and level of detail *chef's kiss*...and for that reason alone, I still give this movie a positive review. But the lack of emotion and the voice acting is pretty bad. The kid actors, Beyonce, and Donald in particular were horrible. The movie redeemed itself a bit when Billy and Seth took over. And I don't particularly like Seth's sense of humor. Somehow even their animations were better.

One thing I can at least appreciate about this movie is they re-did the soundtrack instead of reusing the old one, AND they mixed in more animal biology by having Shenzi be the queen of the hyena clan, compared to the original where Scar automatically controlled all of the hyenas by himself. I like that Shenzi is an established leader on her own, and then Scar has to convince her and her clan to join his side.

Speaking as someone who literally grew up with the original, it will always be better due to the huge impact on my childhood. However, I loved this version just as much. My only critiques were that “Be Prepared” could’ve been longer with some of the original lyrics, the deleted song “Where Do I Belong” should’ve stayed and had Young Simba sang it as he flees before transitioning back to Pride Rock where Scar takes the throne, the fight between Shenzi and Nala and Simba and Scar could’ve been longer, and the song during Simba’s return should’ve been “He Lives In You” and used Beyoncé’s song for the end credits. 🦁💛🧡❤️

I think this is the only live action remake that is not needed, as Disney shot himself in the foot with ultra realism (Nat Geo Wild documentary). It was necessary to at least cut out all the musical numbers, so as not to create the effect of the uncanny valley. In addition, Scar himself is not perceived here as a character who fawns on Mufasa, but strangely enough, a lion who is ready to kill is only the character turns away.

The 1994 version will always be a classic but this version however made animals look and behave more realistic as if they were all an actual part of nature. There’s also many possibilities that could’ve happened in either versions that actually happen all the time in the wild. 1. Cats always land on their feet which means Mufasa would’ve used that same talent to his advantage which would’ve resulted in survival meaning he would’ve still been king, let alone alive. Cats twist and turn their bodies so that they land on their feet. 2. Since Scar and Mufasa are technically brothers, Scar would’ve been just as much of a king of a pride as Mufasa was. They both would’ve ruled the pride together as equals. In that actually happened, Scar would not be the jealous bastard we all know him as. 3. If Scar took over the pride, he would’ve killed all the cubs so that he would have a chance to score wit Sarabi and the rest of the females which means Nala would’ve been dead and so would’ve Simba. 4. As much as I hate to even think bout this particular fact of life and in this case, lion law, when Simba became of age, he would’ve been kicked out of Mufasa’s pride to take over a pride of his own. Ironically, since Simba was away during Scar’s reign, that meant Simba had an actual chance of challenging Scar. 5. Shenzi addressed bout hyenas and lions being at war since the beginning of time. That is an actual truth. She was referring to all the times that lions and hyenas fought and even killed each other over food, territory, and even just to kill. Just like what the hyenas tried to do to Simba and Nala, hyenas and lions will stoop so low as to even killing each other’s young to avoid future competition over God knows what. Lions are also responsible for 70% of the death of hyenas. 6. Although Mufasa was strong enough to fend off an entire clan of hyenas, it’s still however possible that the clan together as a whole or at least 20 or more hyenas would be enough of hyenas to have just as much of a possible chance of killing Mufasa as he does of killing them, the same way they all lunged at Scar and killed him for ratting them out. Plus, normally, when a lion lunges at a hyena, he or she wouldn’t throw that hyena around. He or she would at least just try to kill it on the very spot. But, I guess since there was God knows how the hell many hyenas, Mufasa wouldn’t’ve had exactly enough time to strangle a hyena to death at least not unless he snapped open the neck or the back of said hyena. 7. When Shenzi brought up the irony to Scar bout a hyena’s stomach never being full just before the hyenas killed him, this could be about some certain acids hyenas have in their stomach that allows them to digest even bones except however for horns. 8. You ever notice all the lionesses standing by while Scar had an oryx kill or I think it may have been a gemsbok or a blesbok. This could be on account of males including Scar often dominating the kills and eating first before everybody else in the pride. Sometimes, after the males are finished wit their part of dinner, the scraps would be the only thing left for everybody else in the pride, let alone the hyenas leading to part of the irony of the ancient war lions have wit hyenas. 8. Males always want loyal females. I know, right? In the 1994 version, there was a deleted where Scar was hitting on Nala to the point where she bitchsmacked him. When a lioness is disloyal to the males of a pride, they kick her out of said pride. That’s exactly what happened in the deleted scene of the 1994 version. 9. Mostly in the Lion King 2: Simba’s Pride, an entire gang of lionesses could’ve easily overpowered any male the same way they were gaining the upper hand on Simba twice which means they could’ve definitely overpowered Scar as well. 10. There was word that the roars in the Lion King of 1994 were not actual roars. There were some roars coming from tigers, mostly from Scar but some of those roars were the same roars used by the lion in the MGMUA logo like when Mufasa asked if Scar was challenging him over the throne, when Mufasa was beating the shit out of the hyenas, and when Simba was fighting Scar. People also made Sabor in Tarzan sound not just like a leopard but also like a lion, a tiger, and a cougar as well. The makers of Kung Fu Panda also made Thai Lung sound like a leopard, a lion, and a tiger as well as even a bear. In the first Kung Fu Panda, the makers had Tigress sound like a cougar instead of a tiger then in Kung Fu Panda, they made her sound like a lion, still instead of a tiger. Sometimes, people even make tigers in movies sound like lions. Idk why people make animals sound like other animals but I can only assume, they haven’t done much research.

Here's some differences: Rafiki now looks like he's supposed to, in that he no longer has a tail. Instead of using the same fruit from the ceremony as a snack, now the ceremonial dab uses red roots. This change was because the fruit from Rafiki's tree doesn't actually look like it did in the cartoon, nor does it contain red juice. They fixed Rafiki's ambidexterity, in that now he's consistently right handed. Be prepared was all but scrapped because most of it was used to ridicule the hyenas into joining him, when in reality, hyenas are actually extremely intelligent. Now the song is more of a war chant. When Timon discovers Simba, instead of lifting a paw, which would've been impossible for Timon's size and strength, now he just checks the teeth. Animals such as the gopher, giant anteaters and swinging monkeys are no longer there because they aren't native to that part of Africa. The leaf carrying ants were kept to keep the circle of life number exactly as is, and because they later help Rafiki discover Simba is alive. The elephant graveyard was completely redone because the skulls shown in the cartoon actually aren't anatomically correct. Now there's just a bunch of bones lying around a cave. Lions are no longer purring. Instead of getting stuck under a tree root, now Pumbaa just slips and falls.
