They didn't want the humans to know so much specific information about the merpeople. It explains nothing we wouldn't learn later from Ursula herself.

@@TheStOne1 Makes sense condisering that in the final film, the one old sailor says "Why, ruler of the merpeople, lad. Thought every good sailor knew about him". They should just leave it at that, like Triton's a legend to the humans.

"We wanted to get to the story" THIS IS LITERALLY EXPLAINING A HUGE PART OF THE STORY !!!! this would have not taken away from the little mermaid at all I say they made a bad call on shortening this scene

Remember that this is supposed to be the story of Ariel, not of King Triton and Ursula. They wanted to move to Ariel's story sooner. If a Little Mermaid "sequel" had been made to develop the relation between Triton and Ursula, this version of the song could have been reporposed for that.

Nah, all of the exposition delivered in this extended sequence is repeated at different points in the film in more organic contexts (Triton's seven daughters in their brief song, Ursula's ambitions throughout her screen time, etc.)

So Ariel and Ursula are aunt and niece?, WoW thats some new info that I dunno why the people involved making this movie should have put it in the movie, maybe they will in the live action movie

I love this song but I could understand why it was cut. It had way too much information, way too early.

I just wish they recovered all these in a full animation for 30th anniversary

It's been said Mark Hamill was a background voice for TLM. Could it be that he was the old kook sailor? His laugh at 2:14 sounds a touch Joker-ish.

I wouldn't be surprised because Mark Hamill has said how much he enjoys voice-over acting roles, whether as a main, secondary, or uncredited background character, which has given me the impression that he's a shy actor.

I personally believe they should have added a part to the song about tritons daughter’s but still keep it vague to leave mystery. Because there is a part about Ursula and triton so why not a part about his daughters like each daughter represents a sea of the earth

Maybe they can use this in the upcoming live action remake.

This is a good song but there is much information very early. It is nicer to learn things about merpeople slowly than faster way. I wonder how sailors can know so much about merpeople who does not show themselves to people very often.

Anyone else hear Jim Cummings in this scene?

I could tell at 1:11 that it was Jim Cummings voicing the sailor, especially when he said "lad" I heard Cummings's characteristic grunt.

@@MarcusPearl His first credit for a film is 1988, so this deleted scene is in fact from the original film. They don’t typically make and then delete new scenes for rereleases.

@@MarcusPearl Again, we can clearly see that he had a role in The Little Mermaid that was cut. This happens all the time, deleted scenes are scenes that were cut from the film, and sometimes that means an actor’s entire role getting cut too.

Sadness is knowing they cut this from the film.

In this version it says Ursula and Triton

The song is great but I'm still glad it was cut down. It gave away too much, too soon. Part of what made Ursula so sinister was her opening monolog. It dropped just enough hints to give us the chills; had this song been included in whole, it would have taken the edge off Ursula.

So apparently Ursula is Ariel’s aunt? That also makes Morgana an aunt too

Even though I do like the song, it makes sense to me why they cut it to save time as well as showing that the humans don’t know to much information about the Royal Family/Merpeople!

No rumors. They were going to make her Triton's sister but they changed it in the final version. They are siblings in the Broadway version though.

Surprising how even the sailors in this part were aware of Ursula and her evil ways as a warning for Prince Eric.

Ok, here's what I'm wondering. If King Triton forbade his mer-subjects from swimming to the surface, how is it that those sailors know about the merfolk???

Good question- I believe that merfolk were allowed to go to the surface in the past, but when sailors sailed in the seas where the merpeople lived, the sailors sighted the merpeople. Learning of the sailors and wary of any possible danger, Triton than forbade his subjects to go to the surface.

Celestia Drools Yeah I wish that would’ve been explained in the original movie back in the 80s. At least they are planning on including her in the live action remake, like perhaps in flashbacks from King Triton’s mind.

I agree with this version giving too much exposition, however they could've left a clue about Ursula's relation to Triton without mentioning it explicitly to give a sense of looming danger in the "fathoms below".

i wish they had kept this. fathoms below is my favourite from the little mermaid. i hope this is in the remake

Well I liked how this song turned out in the new movie and it was good how they made a backstory for Ursula confirming that she really IS King Triton’s sister and if there is a specific reason why he forbade contact with the above world it’s because his wife was killed by humans, even if by an unnoticed happen stance.
