Arial getting legs is symbolising her becoming an adult and gaining her independence from her Father, while letting go is one of the hardest things for a parent. Triton wasn't ready to have his daughter become a woman and so was overprotective.

This was a phenomenal film. It broke Disney back into being the dominant storytelling machine. With this and subsequent films the female leads were all strong women who knew what they wanted and knew how to handle themselves…… in believable ways and not over exaggerated in your face empowerment. Just strong women.

However, because of production issues, they simplified the story into a comedy.

To be fair, think about what Triton would know based on what he’s seen being a sea dweller. Fishermen, constantly taking his subjects from the sea for food or just killing them for no known reason. If all you know of a group is their violent acts, you’re going to see them as a violent species. I seriously doubt the concept of taking his youngest and naïve daughter straight into the nest of such of species was ever into question. It’s like a ram taking his lamb into the wolves’ den just because they fascinated her. 😂

Of all the celebrities we lost to AIDS, none was a bigger loss for me than Howard Ashman - the brilliant lyricist for this film. With the subtitles on, I noticed an interesting lyric in that first number. Are you ready kids? The phrase "nautical nonsense" appears. 😲🤯 I wonder if SpongeBob knows Ariel? Anyway, Howard was an absolute genius and the world is a richer place for him having been a part of it.

100% the world is richer for Howard’s life work. He directly and indirectly brought joy to so many millions, and it will flow forever, just like Walt’s gifts to the world, because that musical magic was distilled in art and captured on film. May we never lose sight of it the way the current Disney Corp has. I have personally been listening to his demo of Under The Sea in the shower.

I loved that you didn't fall into any of the bad misinterpretations of this wonderful movie. They stick with the story they are telling and make every scene, facial expression, and word count. They are able to tell us so much about these characters with so little. I do understand you're questioning why Triton didn't take Ariel to the surface himself to protect her and see the human world. In a perfect parenting world maybe he would have thought of it. Maybe being the king of the sea and being magically connected to it maybe he can't leave it. I don't think that's something that would even cross his mind with his human hatred. Good thing he got to see Eric throw himself into danger to protect Ariel so he could overcome his bias. 😊

The reason why he didn't change her in the first place is because what happened to Ariel's mother, she was killed by humans. That's why he was so protective of her because of that.

Yep, and they should have mentioned that in the original movie. Explained why we dont see Ariel's mother and even why we never see Eric's parents. Might have been a good idea to have Eric's parents killed by a merman or the sea witch for example and Ariel's mum was killed by a human.

Fun fact the same person who voiced Ursula in the 1989 Little Mermaid was also Chief Communications officer Uhura in Star Trek The Original Series. She was a classically trained actress who sang and danced beautifully and she was incredibly intelligent and was a pioneer for women in acting. Especially minority women. She was one of the first women in Science fiction to be given a major and important role that didn't center on being "the damsel" trope or the "romantic interest" character

Ursula is a Cecaelia, which are half-human, half-octopus. In the film, she was once a resident in the palace, possibly a royal magician of sorts until King Triton caught her using black magic and banished her. However, in the current license version of the stage musical and based on the deleted storyline for her, Ursula is the youngest of seven daughters. Her father was the sea god Poseidon, and she was always envious as he doted on the other daughters but not her. To ease his guilt for being an awful father to her, he gifted her a magic nautical shell. Ursula started using black magic with it to kill off her sisters to become the favorite. When that plan failed, she committed patricide, the act of killing ones’ own father; she then became the ruler of the entire ocean. However, she had a younger sibling, King Triton. When he became of age, he took back rule of the seas, the crown, and the trident. Then he banished her, and she swore revenge. It’s revealed the final confrontation that Ursula was responsible for the death of Ariel‘s mother. King Triton never knew because he assumed that humans killed her because she went for a swim one day and never came back. Ariel defeated her aunt by smashing her shell which acted as a life force to her. 🐙🐚🌊🪸💜🖤🩵💙

Good to know. That seems loosely based on the myth of Zeus, the youngest son who is kept hidden away until he is old enough to kill his father Cronus (Ursula) who himself had usurped and killed his father. Where Poseidon plays the role of his and Zeus’s grandfather Uranus. I actually love this. Not a fan of Ariel breaking the shell, I understand that’s easier for a stage play but Eric’s act of risking his life to save Ariel is what redeems humans in King Triton’s eyes, that’s crucial to the story, otherwise why would Triton use his magic power to make Ariel human? But I do wish the film could’ve been 15 minutes longer with some of that Greek mythic backstory included. Maybe one more song to tell it??

@@TheCapedWanderer they had a version of the reprise of Poor Unfortunate Souls where Ursula casts a spell that changes her into Vanessa. It might’ve been going that route, but replaced it with the royal princesses attempting to win Eric via singing contest. Ariel attempts to dance her words which Eric understands despite the harsh judgment she’d received from it. He hears Ariel’s siren song but tells Grimsby to tell “her” that she was late as he made his choice. Of course the sun sets as Ursula comes to collect Ariel. in the junior adaption of the musical, Eric set sail to try to rescue Ariel. He sees Ursula as she uses the trident to create tidal waves to cause him to turn the ship the other way to avoid a crash. Pretty much, it is the similar final confrontation in the Broadway adaption. However, after Ariel restores her voice, Ursula thinks nothing of it as she has the trident. Ariel insist that even though Ursula may have the trident, she will still never have her father‘s powers. Ursula obviously does not like that idea and swears that she will use the power of Poseidon via the trident to destroy her as she destroyed her mother. However, while attempting to use the trident, she loses control, which creates a whirlpool that sucks her and the eels to their doom.

The conflict between Triton and his youngest daughter is interesting, not least because of one key point. We see Triton hating humans, we see him doting on his daughters... where is their mother? And only the youngest daughter who would remember Mom least pushes back against the human-hate. The rest of the family treats humanity as apex predators, but all she can see is crafts and art. The best future for everyone is to have Eric and Ariel acting as a bridge between their respective peoples into the future.

Love your take on this! And I really love how you could appreciate Eric's character as well. Some say he was dull but he really is a brave, charismatic guy who genuinely cares about Ariel and is an equal. I mean, Ariel saved him at the beginning, and then Eric saves her at the end, which is just beautifully tied in, and also is the reason why Triton sees humans in a different light. The reason Triton was so protective over Ariel in particular, was because 1. Queen Athena was killed by pirates whose ship had rammed into her 2. Of all his daughters, Ariel is the one that looks the most and has a personality most like Athena. So there is that subconscious extra protectiveness. One of my favourite princess movies of all time, and I'm glad that you could appreciate the beauty in it as well ^^

It’s not until Prince Eric risks his own life to save Ariel and Triton by killing the sea witch with the sunken ship, that humans are redeemed in Triton’s eyes. That act of love demonstrated the goodness of humanity, which Triton could finally recognize, where his daughter had always seen it. Really the person who transforms over the course of the movie is Triton. Because he thought the humans were violent savages who have nothing to offer but death to his daughter. He’s wrong, obviously, and yes he might’ve sent a spy or two up there to check it out, but The Little Mermaid is the story of the sea king’s daughter finding belonging in the human world and making her father come around to understand that. Triton would never have used the transforming magic if he hadn’t witnessed Eric save Ariel from the clutches of the villain that he himself had fallen prey to. I agree it would have been the strategic move to use it, for sure, but the sea king was prejudiced! Land Prince had to save Sea King to bring peace between humans and merfolk. Great video and I’m glad you point out how much care they took to develop the romance, Eric gets a lot of characterization in what little screen time he has, and their scenes together are all significant. Blowing the pipe in Grimsby’s face, etc. And him playing her melody on his little flute at night. Very sweet. Beautiful movie. Agreed on Sebastian being the standout role! Everything he does is solid gold.

Sebastian is the real hero of this story. We are so proud of him. He may not have approved of Ariel’s dreams, but he certainly wouldn’t have gone to the extent of Triton by destroying her grotto. I love when he tries to apologize to Ariel and he instantly regrets accidentally snitching on her. And he doesn’t want to tell on her after she gets her legs because he knows she’s been emotionally scarred. She’s technically not safe where she lives. Two wrongs don’t make a right. Sebastian takes full responsibility to make her happy and to make up for letting her down in the first place. He’s such a sweet character and is trying to make up for ratting her out. That’s a brave hero right there. One who may be neurotic, but helps you anyway because it’s the right thing to do ❤️.

There are so many racist and sexist comments here (about the remake) it’s disgusting. As someone who grew up with The Little Mermaid as their favorite film at the time, this movie is super underrated for its story and characters, and I loved your reaction! It really is a story about a father learning to let his daughter grow up, and the romance is sort of the cherry on top. Ariel and Eric for the win! As for the remake, it gives even more development to Ariel and Eric, so if you loved them here you’ll definitely love them in the live action. It also takes the Caribbean influences from the original film (from Sebastian and the Calypso music) and properly sets the live action in the Caribbean, so there’s a lot of color and life on land and it’s a really cool adaptation of The Little Mermaid story. Obviously it’s not perfect like any other movie, but seeing what you liked about the original, I think you’ll definitely like the remake :) Have a blessed Sunday!

The Little Mermaid is one of my favorite Disney princess movies, Growing up I had a crush on Eric and Ariel was my favorite Disney princess. A lot misunderstand Ariel and the movie, that Ariel was a damsel in distress and that she wasn't badass like modern Disney princesses, and that she gave up her voice for a man but I think they unfairly criticize Ariel, First of all, she was already fascinated with the human world BEFORE she met ERIC, she even sang PART OF YOUR WORLD BEFORE SHE MET ERIC, Eric was just another motivation for her to GO to the human world, I mean I can't blame her, she can achieve her life long dream and get a man alongside! Nonetheless, ARIEL WAS ALREADY A BADASS in her own way, although she was young and naive, and she can be reckless at times but she's also brave, kind, adventurous, and curious, and when she wants something she pursues it! SHE'S PROACTIVE! what's more girl boss than that?! She wants something, and she works to GET IT. Also girly made a move to a PRINCE, that alone screams girl boss like my introverted ass can never! hahaha. She even SAVED Flounder from the shark and saved Eric TWICE! (Shipwreck/drowning and Ursula). People say that she's stupid to exchange her voice blah blah though it is kinda stupid but keep in mind she was heartbroken at that moment because her father destroyed her collections and things that she value and collected all her life, sometimes when our emotions are high, we tend to do things that are not logical and would act out of that emotion especially that she's a teenager. Ariel just wanted to be happy, she just wanted to CHASE HER DREAMS, she was in a vulnerable state, and at that moment she must've felt like it was the only option to achieve her dreams because her father would never agree so it was now or never and she was exploited by the sea witch. People are so harsh on Ariel but when you think about it, the one to blame for all the stupid things that Ariel did is her Father King Triton, IF HE GAVE HER A HEALTHY SPACE TO PURSUE HER PASSION AND INTEREST none of those things would happen, she won't go to the sea witch, get exploited, make stupid decisions and risk the life of her own species. It was all a RESULT of BAD PARENTING and King Triton's Anger Management Issues, he was too harsh and strict on her which led Ariel to rebel. Though King Triton had the very right to hate humans and he was just trying to protect his daughter but still, it was all due to his strictness, and he kinda went overboard. That is why in the movie, it wasn't Ariel who had a Character development Arc, it was her father because he was the one who needed to change which he did, and realizes his mistakes and let his daughter Go to live her life. ARIEL IS A PROACTIVE DISNEY PRINCESS! SHE WAS FAR FROM A WEAK DAMSEL IN DISTRESS, just because she showed some vulnerability doesn't make her weak, she was imperfect but that's what made her perfect.

I agree 100% however on Triton, I've often wondered... we don't see Ariel's mother, and I got the strong feeling that his hatred of humans was because they killed his wife. In that case he would be protecting his daughter.

@@TresTrefusis That's true, it was shown a prequel The little mermaid Ariel's Beginning. Like I said he had the very right to hate humans considering what happened to his wife, and he just wanted to protect his daughter but he kinda went overboard by destroying the things she worked so hard for and things that she valued. In the animation he regretted it but he thought it needed to be done which is kinda wrong, instead of creating a HEALTHY SPACE, he used a HARSHER METHOD he even realize that when they couldn't find Ariel he said "What have I done, what have I done". My mom used to be very overprotective and my dad used to say to my mom when I was younger that "The more you chain them, the more they would want to escape". it kinda applies to King Triton and Ariel. No parent is perfect though, I UNDERSTAND King Triton, he only did what he thought was right and what he thought he was supposed to do as a parent, he had good intentions but his method didn't work for Ariel because she was a headstrong girl, at the end of the day I can't really blame king triton hahahahah but Ariel shouldn't be unfairly criticized as well, she only did what SHE KNEW WOULD MAKE HER HAPPY.

For extra context of why Triton hated humans so much to begin with...(spoilers) ...Ariel's Beginning establishes what was greatly suspected from the start - Ariel's mother was killed by humans and what's worse is that she is the spitting image of her mother. That's one of the reasons Eric saving Ariel and being willing to sacrifice his life for her was such a big deal for Triton, and the experience allowed him to get over his hatred for humans along with the grief of his own loss, concluding a great character arc for him.

If you knew what happened to Triton's wife, then you would understand why contact with the surface world was forbidden & why he wouldn't have allowed Ariel to explore the land above until the end of the movie. He didn't want what happened to his beloved Athena to happen to any other merfolk, including his daughters & especially Ariel. Not only is she the youngest daughter, but she's also the spitting image of her mother. Losing her would be like losing Athena all over again, only much worse. Your children are supposed to bury you, not the other way around. Watch The Little Mermaid 3 & you'll understand.

Something that I genuinely love about this movie that I heard they f***** up in the remake which offends me more than almost any of the other offense of changes they made is the fact that Ariel apparently kills Ursula and not the prince that was the whole f****** reason Triton finally accepted him and p it was also powerful because in the beginning she saves his life when they first met and he returned the favor later and they went & fucked that up to

    1) watch Ariel beginning it explains why he was so against humans and so overly protective of his daughter and the sequel it explains the whole story 2) it's a over looked fact, it's actually a couple years after king Triton gave her legs when they got married, Eric let her have the time to fully learn about the human world.

I love the animated little mermaid. I thought the live action version was OK. It didn’t do the animated version justice as is the case for every single live action version of any Disney movie. I just think it’s hard to really make that work when most of the characters are candlesticks or crustaceans.

Let me drop a Little Mermiad back story theory I read. I take no credit for this. Ursula used to be in the palace, said so in the movie. Her goal is to get back in the palace and rule. So, according to folklore mermaids are also called sirens. They use their VOICE to lure men to them. Then they drag them under and eat them. Eric is enchanted by Areils' voice.... when she sang to him on the beach. Ursula wants areils voice to get to the prince. Ursula has no rights in the palace without a royal title. If she marries the prince, she gets her title as princess. That then gives her royal power and rulership. Then taking King Tritans crown would give her FULL rule over all the seas.... AND the land.

glad you enjoyed it. thecarried the movie on his back like the crustation he is made me smile :) and i'm glad ypu noticed all the signs about ariel and erics love nogt coming out of nowhere...she was already interesting in humans after all ad he was semi a bit of an excuse to go on land. him wanting to hold out for the right girl. her getting to see a bit about his personality while she watched him on the boat. her saving him while also noticing he is handsome. i mean yeah, if her dad had just let it go she might not have fixated on eric as much where she would make a deal with a sea witch over him(thats what the dad gets for destroying her collection). while we see eric actually being the type to help a stranger...him recognizing her a little but even when he thought she wasnt the one who saved him he still gave her shelter and showed her around his kingdom and actually got to know her. her definitly showing her curious personality. him literally needing to be hypnotized to go with the person who 'saved' him(ursula) and still going to be with her and be by her side after finding out whats been happening with very little context. alot of people tend to dismiss it at face value as shallow despite the details helping fill in quite a few holes and the clear chemistry clearly being shown. i laughed at your reaction finding out triton had the power to give his daughter legs the whole time. it makes me wonder if she hadn't gone to the witch and just ran away for a few days considering we saw how sorry he was...if maybe they could have reached a deal eventually...even if we get why she was able to be taken advantage of since triton ent that far.

Triton never wanted anything to do with the human world because humans killed his wife/Ariel's mom (this is something we see in the third cartoon film...and we're also 99% sure that the killer of Ariel's mom was Captain Hook because they used his ship and crew in the film).

Also something people always say when reacting to this the real Little mermaid is they always act like she gave up everything for a man know she was in love with being a human long before she ever met him and was hit by love at first sight it wasn't just about the man it was about the fact she loved his world she wanted to be part of it long before she ever saw him and she felt like an outsider in the sea she never really vibed with her community she felt like the black sheep she wanted to be somewhere where she fit in and she felt like the human world was where she fit in
