"The Listening" feat. Donzaleigh Abernathy, Wes Felton - by Cheryl B. Engelhardt [Choral Version]

Музыка

A virtual collaboration performance by The Listening Choir (members of several different social justice, professional and community choirs). Inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr's 1967 speech "A Time to Break Silence", written by Cheryl B. Engelhardt. This virtual recording was inspired by many choirs after George Floyd's murder. We came together to create this recording.

TEXT:
Violence! Silence! Silence! Violence! Time!
Time has come for us to move on.
We must move on.
There is a new spirit rising.
I turn my back when I hold my tongue
I cannot be silent.
I cannot stand by and leave these words unsung.
I cannot be silent.
Trust and praise is reason to make better choices.
It’s our purpose to speak for the voiceless.
We must hear their broken cries.
It starts with listening.
This is the re-creation of the listening…
Interruption, oppression, suppression, exploitation, violence, control, hypocrisy…
Somehow, this madness must stop.
To be on the right side of the revolution
means it’s time we shift our view of peace so we can alter our evolution.
War is not the way.
Can we be tranquil and somewhat tame,
rational while we stay sane?
Solve the problem with a solution thereof.
That being unconditional love?
Love.
Not as a weak condition.
But as the key for the ignition of peace.
The time is now.
There is a new spirit rising.
We must act in the face of risk.
We must choose to transform,
and we need to be brisk.
I cannot be silent. I will not be silent.
It is time to close the gap,
and stop the distancing, stop inhibiting,
stop what we are witnessing.
It’s time to break the silence with the listening.
A NOTE FROM THE COMPOSER:
This piece was commissioned by Andre DeQuadros for VOICES21C (www.voices21c.org) in late 2017. After careful study of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s speech titled “Beyond Vietnam- A Time To Break The Silence” the text was crafted. The speech was given on April 4th, 1967, a year before his assassination, at Riverside Church in New York City. It was a denunciation of America’s involvement in the Vietnam War, in addition to a cry for the American people to listen to the unheard voices.
Dr. King was listening to the oppressed, the abused, the poor, the scared, and the unloved. In “The Listening”, I set out to recreate how he listened. This is the recreation of the listening.
“The Listening” has been performed by choirs around the globe. It was the piece chosen by the All New England Choir competition where 250 high school students sang together after a discussion of what their experience of singing the song meant for them.
In 2020, months into a pandemic and weeks after the murder of George Floyd, multiple choirs who had performed "The Listening" prior to the pandemic reached out to see if they could do a virtual recording of the piece as a statement of outrage, protest, solidarity, and justice. These choirs came together to form "The Listening Choir", and the piece you are hearing today.
We worked closely with the Riverside Church Archives to access and license the sound recording of Dr. King's speech, which you hear in this piece.
The recording premiered in PEOPLE magazine during Black History Month of 2021.

Like? LIKE??? Not enough to like this, it needs to be lived, and there’s no button for that. Cheryl, you are showing us all how to be both the artists and the humans we are called to be. Artists have a certain calling we must honor, and you help artists do that. You demonstrate that. All humans have a calling to embrace, cherish and honor life, and you powerfully, beautifully address this issue with this video. Bravo, Cheryl👏💜 Dayyum, sister, tears over here. Peace be yours, you have stirred the devil’s pot and rightly so; may you be BLESSED in this endeavor. All blessing, I humbly, pray 🙏🏻 P.S. your composition and arrangement KICK IT *heee HAW!* ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ What talent!!!

Wow! I am at a lost for words. It takes your breath away. Yet, it's so powerful and right on the money. My only wish would be that those things never happened and people treated each other equally. When it comes down to it we all are people it doesn't matter what color your skin is. You're still a human being with a mind, body and soul. Thus should be respected as such. 💜💜

A powerful and inspirational musical call-to-action: "It's our purpose to sing for the voiceless... We must hear their broken cries...It starts with the LISTENING...The time is now... There is a new spirit rising...Solve the problem with the solution of peace and unconditional LOVE. It's time to break the silence with the LISTENING". So beautifully articulated and sung. The introduction with Donzaleigh Abernathy and the images give this video a contextual anchor showing a horrifying history and yet a hopeful path forward with the the new spirit rising. The first step to awareness and wisdom starts with listening. Thank you for the reminder of this simple, timeless and often overlooked truth in THE LISTENING.
