The link between exercise and gut microbiota

Exercise helps in improving the gut microbiota - trillions of microorganisms residing in our gut. These microbes play many crucial roles in the body such as fermentation of dietary fibres, nutrient uptake, vitamin production and maintenance of gut barrier. They also produce various metabolites such as short chain fatty acids (SCFA) which has many beneficial effects upon various organs of the body.
Generally, exercise improves the good bacteria and reduces the bad ones in the body. Moderate intensity exercise is optimum for the gut microbes. Along with exercise, diet has additive effects upon the gut microbiota.
Shrushti Shah, researcher at University of Calgary, Canada explains the link between exercise and gut microbiota and how it is beneficial for one's overall health.

This is an interesting not so popular angle of maintaining gut health. Physical activity truly helps the body in so many ways.
