Del Shannon's voice and material were unique. Hearing his hits from the early Sixties can bring back time and place and teenage state of mind. Heaven must have a sound stage around every corner.

One of the better ' wandered into a bar ' rock n roll stories was one from a KZread comment ( of all things ) where a guy told story from his grandfather who was in the navy in 1962 and while in Hamberg on shore leave they were looking for rock n roll bands in the bars and kind of liked these certain bunch with a lead man that was always acting like a goof and saying witty things. It turned out it was early Beatles playing in Hamberg. They also had cheap suits that the dye was melting with their sweat and getting all over. This was confirmed by Paul as a real event

Back in 2004 I had the exact same synth-ems as Del, I suffered for a year and a half then I finally got help when I obtained medical insurance, I was proscribed Prozac and for the first 30 days I felt worse but I still had the will to live and I toughed it out and slowly was cured. I wish Del did the same thing.

I dated Jody Westover and we became good friends. I knew Del. He was an interesting guy. Unique and a bit eccentric. He and Jody both had battled alcoholism but stopped drinking and stayed sober. I was very saddened to hear that Jody had passed away. I had lost touch with Jody and hadn't spoken with her in awhile. I ran into her brother Craig and he told me she had passed away from cancer. That was tough for me. By the way Del had written the song Jody in 1961, not after Jody's passing. Obviously that would have been impossible since Del had died many years before Jody.

I'm 66 yrs. and I never heard this story. Speaking as someone who was prescribed Prozac 25 yrs. ago and took it for about a year, I can attest to the fact that the side affects are far worse than the main reason to prescribe it in the first place. I just stopped those drugs too!

I was also prescribed PROZAC at one time but when I got that bottle home I threw it away never even taking one of them. I had been warned about that EVIL DRUG and it's negative side effects. I'm sure I made the right decision on that. I later fired my psychiatrist and never saw another one again. To this day I have absolutely no faith in the PSHYCIATRIC PROFFESION and I always warn others not to believe everything they say.

My favorite recording by Del is the b-side of "Hats Off to Larry", "Don't Gild the Lily, Lily". I've always loved his records - I have most of them. "Runaway" was, by FAR the most-requested song my band played. It was one of the first songs I learned in my teens, and was the last song I sang on stage, many years later. Audiences always sang along to the 'wa-wa-wa-wa-wonder' part.

In January 1990 Shannon was pushing himself to finish a new album and schedule upcoming concerts, resulting in troublesome stress. On the advice of his doctor, on January 24, Shannon began taking Prozac, an antidepressant. Fifteen days later, he died by suicide, shooting himself with a .22 caliber rifle at his home in Santa Clarita, California, on February 8, 1990.[16] "He was very much in charge of his business, but within days after he started taking Prozac I noticed a personality change in him. He developed severe insomnia, extreme fatigue, chills, racing heart, dry mouth, and upset stomach," testified LeAnne Westover, Shannon's widow. "Suicide was totally out of character for my husband. There was no note and no goodbye

I met Del Shannon’s wife in Washington DC when we both spoke at a hearing on the drug that led to Del’s suicide. She shared with me how happy he had been because he was revamping his career. She told me when he started Prozac he started having suicidal ideation…one of the side effects. She spoke eloquently at the FDA hearing with lots of us sharing our experiences too! Wonderful lady! I shared Del’s symptoms, and knew exactly how he felt before he died. Horrible drug for lots of us! I will never try any drug like it again!

Saw him many times in the 70s around manchester ,one of the greatest live performers ever ,always gave a great show ,i once went to the bar in the willows at salford at the end of the night and del was stood there getting a drink ,i pulled out my pretend guitar and started singing the answer to everything to him and asked him why he didnt play it that night, He stopped me there and then said whats your name,i said cliff and he shook my hand and said pleased to meet you cliff ,he said keep practicing your guitar and singing cliff ,i enjoyed that ,i then told him me and my mates have seen you loads of times del,he said you must be f*****g daft and laughed ,my mates all came to the bar and del said i need to go now ,,i think he enjoyed taking to me and my imaginary guitar as much as i loved talking to him Im 74 now and del shannon is one of the very few people who could get me to leave my bed if he was still performing ,he was great

Wasn’t Del going to replace Roy Orbison in the Traveling Wilburys when Roy died? I could be mistaken but I think Del passed in the process of the TB’s second album which is why they titled their second album Volume 3.

@@gerry1620 Hey, Gerry. Thanx for the response. I did a little research on KZread, etc., and according to sources, there was speculation that Del Shannon or Roger McGuinn might replace Roy Orbison after his passing. It never happened. However, you might enjoy the video performance of 'Runaway' by the Traveling Wilburys on KZread - that features Del Shannon. "Keep on Rockin' in The Free World..."

this man influenced my band The Oak Cliff Beats in 1963.....He allowed us to do his version of From Me To You Written by John Lennon of the Beatles.....We did this number with me on harmonica in 1963, and our on stage performances were over run by American Females rushing onto our stage knocking us, and our amps completely over.....We did not get American press attention because of the rolling stones coming on the scene...I was deeply saddened to hear of his suicide because I believed he loved GOD....I WAS TERRIBLY DISAPPOINTED !
