The life on a mining village in Western Australia

After working 9 months in different mining sites around Western Australia, I decided to make this little video after realizing that unless you've been there, it's really hard to imagine what is it to live on a mine site village. It's usually way better that what people imagine...

Hi Pierre, thanks so much for this video. It only instills into me more, how much I want to work for the Mining Industry. And the links on your blog are great, "How to get a job on a mine site in Australia". I will get started on contacting those companies on Monday. I want to drive Machinery, but if this looks like a great way to get my foot in the door at least. Cheers mate, V

I worked on a coal mining site in Qld in the 1970s. No TV, no air con, no gym, no women, radio hardly worked. Recreation facilities = one table tennis table, one 8-ball table, dartboard. Do your own laundry & cleaning, communal showers & toilets. Everything else pretty much the same. Pay was $4,550 per year

Every camps are different but for housekeeping, I started at 5am, finishing around 5pm or 6pm. Kitchens work with usually a day and a night shift. In any case, you'll work 10 to 12h non stop for 14 days, then either you fly out or you have a day off before going back to work. Most of catering work I did were 2 weeks on, 1 off. One camp was 4/1...

There was a whinging pkiwi on Ch7 this week saying nothing to do. 1. Make some friends. 2. Go for exploring walks. 3. Start a card playing club. Learn canasta (no gambling). 4. Gym. 5. Find people with similar music/books to you. I lived 3yrs in a mining Town and we kept busy out of work hours, but saved pots of money. We all ended up travelling. I also did 1yr in a mining camp. Loved it.

No training. I got the job probably thanks to a previous experience in industrial cleaning. The recruiting process took me 2 weeks but it can be longer : interview, drug screening, various online induction and waiting time to get booked on a camp and get a flight. If you are australian, I would try first to get recuited directly by the catering company, check my blog to know which one.

I work as the drifter (the miner - miner), we conduct a driving on extraction of iron ore, we are also engaged in construction of underground objects (directly we build the mine, a driving of vertical trunks). If you know someone in the industry, it's easy to start as truck driver. If you don't, it's difficult and then, you might try to enter buy the small door (catering company) to make some contact. From my understanding, mining company need a lot of truck driver but they all want people with experience in mining because they are tired of training people on dump truck to see them leaving to the competition after few months. Once you have the experience, it's easy. Hope that it's help.

Mining industry : For a dump truck driver, the salary you mentioned should be around that. Even if you have been diving truck for years, to get into the mining industry is about knowing people. I know some australian who paid a lot of money (2000 to 3000 AUD) to do a dump truck training but are still waiting to get a job while some of my former jobmates with no HR driving licence got it all paid by a company doing construction work for the mines.

If you allocated a permanent room like I was at area C I ended up buying a second bass guitar to leave locked in my room cupboard! Usually though you will be aloud up to 10KG of checked in luggage. My bass a music man sub serious and hardshell case weighed in about 8kg so if you have an accoustic guitar even better👍 biggest thing though is the size of the camp! If your traveling on a jet with virgin or Cobham you will be fine, but if you fly with someone like Rex airways you might have some trouble with bringing a guitar. I brang my PlayStation up with HDMI cord. If you ever start FIFO remember to go with TELSTRA!!!! Very important! Vodafone and Optus so on won't work at most sites and you'll have no Netflix or Amazon 🤣 a very boring two weeks for me the first time I went up 😑

Music was my Saviour up there! I had a Fender rumble like 15W amp with headphones ,3 band EQ with audio jack to play along to your favourite tunes without angering anyone trying to sleep 👍 some people drink lots of alcohol to deal with being away some people go to the gym everyday to fight the blues.. I couldn't wait to finish my 12 hours day so I could go jam out for a couple hours and then hit the sack 😁 I improved alot because I had so much uninterrupted time to practice and learn. Best of luck If you do go up!

I went through a hiring agency in Perth, Hays. I applied for any job in what they call "soft services" and got hired than to some experience in industrial cleaner. They gave me a kitchen job ( logical...) and I moved from one camp to another, doing sometimes cleaning , so other time kitchen work again... it's all to the camp manager. But if you want a step in the door and get some contact to get better paid job, that's the way to start for many people.

This was a year ago so maybe you know now But with ESS or Sodexo for a 14/7 swing around 68-73k a year depending on your particular contract. Works out to be 1500 a week after tax. So on your week off you have to account for the fact you don't get paid. So it works out to be 1K a week after tax. You usually work 12 hours a day with a a one hour break. So 11 hours worked. 77 hours a week. For two weeks straight 154 hours. It's honestly not the best wage considering the hours spent. The environment . Quality of the camp can vary widely depending on where you go. And your away from friend and family. But if your good at budgeting and happen to have no kids... You should be able to save a fair bit if your smart

If you can upgrade to a class 5 licence all you have to do when you arrive in OZ is to obtain a learners permit for the MC(Multicombination) licence, do a small theory test which isn't hard. Book yourself in with a driving school to do a test drive with a B Double(This is the expensive part) Having NZ B Train experience can lessen the cost greatly. Do your test drive sit a Fatigue management theory test paper, do your full medical and you are ready for the road. WA is the best state to start in

My health risk : straining my elbow cleaning pots, Miners ? Probably diabetes for rich foods and lack of physical activities... Agreed that you might have a mental stress, due to responsibilities or risks and camp staff have it too, dealing with guys like you. Try my job one day and we can talk about how hard it can be to keep you happy.

no wuries. hope you succeed as there is really good money to be earned for MC drivers over here. The average wage for running express Perth - Sydney is between $1400 - $1600 per 5 day trip as a team driver. I run solo from Perth to the mines up the Northwest and I usually earn an extra $350 on top of that. Check out my vids if you like.
