The Life, Death and Resurrection of Lawnchair Larry | Tales From the Bottle

Ойын-сауық

The topics in Tales From the Bottle videos, while bizarre to a comical extent, too often end in tragedy. This story is no different, but maybe this time the tears are bittersweet. This is the story of Lawnchair Larry
"On July 2, 1982, Larry Walters made a 45-minute flight in a homemade airship made of an ordinary patio chair and 45 helium-filled weather balloons. The aircraft rose to an altitude of over 15,000 feet (4,600 m) and floated from the point of takeoff in San Pedro, California, into and violating controlled airspace near Los Angeles International Airport. During the landing, the aircraft became entangled in power lines, but Walters was able to safely climb down. The flight attracted worldwide media attention and inspired a later movie and imitators."

I saw that when I was a kid(16), and I so wanted to do the same. My mother however put the kybosh on the idea, when a strange steel bottle of helium showed up in the garage. So what to do? I'm already in the red with the helium tank and all the balloons. So I started selling fresh helium balloons to anybody having a party or occasion where they needed balloons. I undercut the competition and ended up still making a profit. Silver lining, I guess.

Huh, so he did survive. I thought I heard about this ending in disaster once as this was an urban legend. Nice to hear he survived, and I'm so sorry to hear how he ended his life. If only he could have found some peace in life, I think he would have been happy to see what he did became something more people would do. But I'm sure he's found peace in the other life and is happy to see others follow his example

He probably only just achieved positive buoyancy, but once he started climbing, it just didn't stop. As the air thins, the balloons would expand with lower pressure, compensating for the reduced lift.

Those charges were a stretch. Honestly, if I was the cop, I would have given him a pass. A man like that, deserves to be free, even if his stupidity overshadowed his ingenuity. While the rest of us only dream about it, he actually did it. We salute you, Lawnchair Larry! If I was the president, and it’s probably a damn good thing that I’m not, July 2nd would be a national holiday. Lawnchair Larry day! We would sing songs about him, get drunk and light fireworks.
