@@VeganSemihCyprus33 - in some cases the "Ego" is needed. This is something that in parts helped us to survive latest ice age, and cosmic catastrophe (plenty of scientific data about it too, what has happened). That constant brutal drive, attitude, competition, that agressivness - it is partly what helped us back then, as we simply didn't have any other choice. But in a modern world this also means that everything is mostly driven by.... greed (and that is driven by the ego of course). Anything else is just a consequence of that action/approach, and the state of the planet would suggests that it is not going to change in the future. In fact, we are a species that probably at the end will kill themselves in the name of future profits and greed. But at least the shareholders will be happy for one more year... /s

This man was an absolute genius!!

Life is simple it's us alone that makes life complicated.

@DespaceMan - exactly. Hence when Alan Watts mentioned: "Control of the world is not really what we want to do"... I have to disagree with it. In general terms some people (corporations included) want exactly that. Nothing more. Total control. And they have money and means to do it, even at the planetary level (look at some projects that billionaires are doing, or what something like Nestle is doing, or even constant wars for natural resources or geopolitical gains in a given region; and long ago even Smedley Butler was vocal about it in his speech). And it is applicable not only to billionaires, politicians, Wall Street guys and Hedge Fund managers, but also at the lower level > even at the work, job, office. From a low level management, middle management and up. Or even between team members. There is always some small or large level of trying to control something, even through the competition for that promissed new management role, position within organization. And at the higher level? Yeah, some people want exactly that. A total control. Sad but true.

I really like Alan Watts and most of the time his lectures and points of view resonate a lot. Unfortunately, I will disagree with this one. Richard Feynman had a great point about the beauty of a flower and how science and thinking adds to the beauty of nature, as partial as our understanding may currently and probably always be. Here it goes, for the patient comment reader: I have a friend who’s an artist and has sometimes taken a view which I don’t agree with very well. He’ll hold up a flower and say “look how beautiful it is,” and I’ll agree. Then he says “I as an artist can see how beautiful this is but you as a scientist take this all apart and it becomes a dull thing,” and I think that he’s kind of nutty. First of all, the beauty that he sees is available to other people and to me too, I believe. Although I may not be quite as refined aesthetically as he is … I can appreciate the beauty of a flower. At the same time, I see much more about the flower than he sees. I could imagine the cells in there, the complicated actions inside, which also have a beauty. I mean it’s not just beauty at this dimension, at one centimeter; there’s also beauty at smaller dimensions, the inner structure, also the processes. The fact that the colors in the flower evolved in order to attract insects to pollinate it is interesting; it means that insects can see the color. It adds a question: does this aesthetic sense also exist in the lower forms? Why is it aesthetic? All kinds of interesting questions which the science knowledge only adds to the excitement, the mystery and the awe of a flower. It only adds. I don’t understand how it subtracts.

Maybe it’s because I’m the eyes of an artist and layperson, the flower is viewed as a mystery. And in the eyes of the scientist, the flower loses its wonder. Just guessing.

I understand what you are saying. However, I think what Alan is pointing towards in this video is the fact that when your mind isn’t conceptually labeling everything “flower”, etc… in that silence of mind you realize directly, you ARE the “flower”. The labels are convenient, but they also veil what I would argue is the DEEPEST mystery or secret in existence… the inherent oneness of all things. Everything is radiant life and you can’t see that when you are looking through the veil of concepts.

Hi andreasbaros. I wouldn't take your friend's comment too seriously. I think it was more about bolstering art and artists, rather than putting down science and scientists. After doing scientific research (psychology) around the Tate Modern and Dali galleries, I'm convinced artists secretly feel inferior. Your friend was in "ego compensation" mode. Underneath all the art-snobbery artists know that anyone with a paint-box and canvas, (or a hammer and chisel), can call themselves "an artist". All you need to "make it" in the art world is enough friends to swear that your work is a priceless masterpiece. Several crates of cheap whisky and a regular party venue gets any artist well started. Arrange a phony sale of the work at an exorbitant price (nudge nudge, wink wink) and they've set the price for the next art-snob to pay. Science on the other hand has more stringent requirements. The ability to hold a beaker without dropping it. (This applies to artists too.). How to fill a test-tube with deadly liquids and not get any on your lab-coat; how to arrange coiled glass condensation tubes to look really, well, "artistic", and how plug in the apparatus without short-circuiting the entire building or electrocuting yourself. This is all PhD stuff of course, and takes years of study, but for you my friend, I have a quick way to silence your friend. We must fight fire with fire. Make yourself a "black box" (literal) with flashing lights, a large meter on top, and a rheostat that deflects the needle. Plug it into the wall-socket and ask your artistic friend to hold onto its two metal electrodes while you "adjust" the rheostat. If the black box can be made to hum and vibrate, so much the better. Keep reminding him he can back out any time, and use the words "you'll feel a slight tingle" and "you don't mind being a guinea-pig do you? Let me know how you get on, this is right at the interface of art and science, and too important to be treated as a joke. Cheers, P.R.

I suppose he is not saying you shouldn't it's a spiritual approach, most scientists aren't particularly spiritual. I think ultimately, there's always more questions presented by science. So if you love biology, do it without doubt, not with the expectation of figuring the universe out, nobody ever will. Just enjoy the moment, enjoy your work, enjoy answering questions and creating more, that's how to live your life ❤

Our brains are so adept at creating its own problems and imaginary threats; it's nothing to be ashamed about, it's just what it's been programmed to do for so long. Mindfulness and meditation are great for calming it down. The workbook called 30 Days to Reduce Stress by Harper Daniels, and the Tao Te Ching have helped. The brain can't calm itself down.

Technically speaking all of physical manifestation is an illusion. He was a rare human being who saw through the illusion… like the Buddha and Jesus. He was partaking in the illusion as he liked… which is our birth right as humans. He didn’t harm anyone and he shared his direct experience of reality, which helps all of humanity. His sharing of his realization, along with others, will ultimately save our species from ourselves. You cannot harm another person, when you understand directly, that at the deepest level, they are you.
