Great subject. It’s amazing how little harmonies you hear in modern music. That’s one of the major reasons why the Beatles, Beach Boys, and Byrds are so phenomenal.

Everything Harmony has been on repeat for me since it came out, I've probably listened to it over a dozen times already lol. That title track is magical. Im excited to check out some of these influences! You should check out Weyes Blood if you haven't, The Lemon Twigs were essentially the backing band to her last two albums and they're both incredible. She pulls from similar influences but Joni Mitchell is probably her biggest.

Thanks for the Jellyfish inclusion. A huge fan of harmonies myself, and absolutely loved both of their albums.

I've always been a sucker for that pop harmony, power pop stuff. You kinda hit the nail on the head in the way you brought the groups together. From the Everly brother's to the lemon twigs. And yes I'm from Long Island

First saw the Lemon Twigs when they appeared on Stephen Colbert's show doing I Want To Prove To You. My first reaction was the drummer looked and played like Keith Moon and the song reeked (in a good way) of doo-wop and then some. Got the Do Hollywood album not long after that. It's the only album I've heard by them thus far, though. I also even picked up some Zappa influences in their music as well. There's a clip of them doing a gorgeous version of the Beatles' There's A Place as an encore at one of their shows. Incredible harmonies. And nope, there's nothing schmaltzy about early Bee Gees. Their "1st" album to me is their masterpiece, and yeah, I love that Garfunkel Angel Clare album as well.

"Wouldn't it be nice". to here people "together in perfect harmony". "Maybe I'm Amazed" at how infrequent bands emphasize vocal harmony these days. I could go on but "I'm leaving on a jet plane". Great vid Mazzy.😎

Love this video and love, love, love The Lemon Twigs! here is not one dud on their new album. You were the guy who turned me on to these very talented brothers. They are musical geniuses, and are so more important than the crap that is called pop today. I’m a huge power pop fan and love the albums you chose, thanks for turning me on to Emitt Rhodes and Klaatu. Some other great power pop that comes to mind is 20/20, The Pernice Brothers, and Teenage Fanclub.

As far as a FANTASTIC band that fits the bill for what you're talking about yet IMO is highly underrated is SPLIT ENZ! Incredible fun melodies, harmonies, Beatles-esque singing, sometimes quirky and sometimes heavy.

Thanks, Mazzy. I hope you do more videos like this, showcasing artists and their influences. I’m sure it takes a lot of work. Some LP covers I’ve never seen before, which is very cool. Nice gold stamp promo copy of Skylarking! When you mentioned Jellyfish I thought of Trip Shakespeare, who were not as power-poppy as them but had the beautiful soaring vocal harmonies. If you haven’t already, check out the song “Spirit” on Are You Shakespearienced? Anyway, bring on the schmaltz…. Thanks!

We had an actual music venue called Melody Fare near Niagara Falls NY. We saw top performers Anka,M.Manchester, Harry Chapin and so many more in the 70s and 80s. It was very common back than,as you know,to see top performers than. It had a rotating stage cause it was a round tent structure about 1500 people.

I love harmonies. I'm sensitive to them when I hear them I often get goose bumps. Slightly more modern pop also has harmonies. Stone Roses (eg. Waterfall), AltJ (on awesome wave), Fleet Foxes. Etc. Today I played a band called Talulah Gosh. Their 2 female vocalists harmonize like there is no tomorrow.

I loved Sunflower Beams first album with the psych flourishes but then their second album I found disappointing. Someone else just showed Lemon Twigs and got me interested in them. I have not bought the album yet but they were able to convince me it was something I needed. Funny to see it a second time. After listening to you I now wonder if it is too slow. Guess I need to stream it

Not to say that any one eras music is better than another but what can be said is that there was much more diversity in the 1960s ...charts would include basic rock stuff , big ballads , movie theme tunes , MOR singers , jazz ( Take Five !) , comedy records ...remember them ? ..... in the UK we had Right Said Fred ( not the crappy band ) ...over the pond you had Hello Mudduh ..Hello Fadduh ..... Today everything sounds very similar and I don't think its just my 70 + year ears ..... mostly rythmn nowadays .... very little melody and forget about interesting harmonies.

You can’t go out of style if you’re drawing on roots deeply entrenched in rich fertile musical soil. The Lemon Twigs are excellent singer songwriter producers. Great band with sweet harmonies and stellar melodies. I’m 65 yrs old and I’m a fan because great melody and harmony are timeless. And these guys know their way around both. Next time somebody tells you there is no good music being made today, point them in the direction of the Lemon Twigs. Well done guys! And great video Norman. Early Bee Gees, Beatles, Beach Boys, Hollies, Nilsson? It doesn’t get any better than that. Oh yeah, and let’s not forget the extremely underrated Gilbert O’Sullivan, whom you mentioned 👍

This is exactly why I have completely fallen off the Björk train in the past decade or so… her last like, 5 albums have all felt like variations of the exact same thing - discordant talk-singing with admittedly gorgeous orchestration and instrumentation/production but absolutely zero melody in sight. It’s a shame because she used to focus on melody, choruses and “hooks” a LOT more but she’s just been coasting on this style now for so long. Even the album covers all look like they were from the same photo shoot, just different outfits. On the contrary, the new Lemon Twigs album is definitely going to be in the running for my top 3 of the year. It’s insanely good, full of melody, harmony, hooks and choruses, while still being complex… and the purple vinyl sounds great.

The Emitt Rhodes album is much better than the sloppy first McCartney album.
