This video is the pop of color on a shelf full of grey, and I hope you know that. It was so insightful, thorough, and personal that I feel like I earned at least a half an hour's worth of knowledge here--way more than most of what I consume these days on KZread. Just wanted to say keep making good art no matter what form it takes because it would be a crime to stop putting yourself out there.

  • @TheDucksEye

Yeah ): in a way I understand why a lot of Lego fans fixate on figures, there is indeed a certain novelty in seeing so many famous characters in a consistent style. But that mindset, and the need for accuracy and detail it requires is also equally stifling. Why find an obscure clone trooper for 50$ when you can make you’re own creative dude with parts you already have?

For some people Lego is a hobby, for others it's a "hobby." I find it hard to believe they actually like Lego, instead they only like Star Wars Lego, or Harry Potter Lego, or Marvel Lego etc. While I still think it's neat to have some of your favourite franchises in Lego form (Stranger Things Lego was cool) it's always been about creativity and imagination. If you're so hung up on it being something so predefined and accurate then just get a model that isn't Lego.

Wow, this was an absolutely amazing video. I feel like the lego community is overwhelmingly far from vapid -- as enthusiastic, imaginative, ingenuitive, mutually encouraging, inspirational, and rich with reflections of fans' sustaining inner child and simply their creativity. And most videos on lego or lego history I feel like exude that passion and love for the toy and the hobby. It's just pleasant content. But this ^ , this felt just exceptional. This felt so personal and sentimental; almost diaristic or like a love letter. Everything about not only just the subject of colour in lego, but what lego has meant to you in your life and throughout the different periods, and even in presentation it all just feels so heartfelt, and authentically touches how meaningful this simple toy has been in my life and my best friends' lives. I remember there was this one nakeyjakey video where he's just laying in bed half under the covers talking the whole video about this game he loved and what it meant to him. And this video makes me feel like i'm almost back on my friend's floor or on the top bunk at night just talking in the dark about what was meaningful to us at the time, often lego of course, but it felt real. And i feel like you did a good job at not just giving a history and not just expressing the enjoyment and even critique, but also how it's been something real. i really loved this. and am definitely sending it to a couple of my friends.

I love Star Wars and superheroes and their Lego counterparts, but I tend to end up buying other themes a lot of the time and I think the colors definitely have something to do with it, the variety of ninjago, monkie kid, friends,a nd city among other themes is just impressive and fun. It also makes me wish, as a fan of comics and superhero comics that Lego would dip more into sets inspired by comics and less boring movie stuff, as most of the coolest and brightest super hero sets have been inspired by comics, not the movies, it’s how we would get stuff like a green lantern jet, or lobo vs krypto, or an avengers jet that was an appealing bright red and white instead of the standard dull gray or dark blue. Unfortunately I know that the movies with darker colors are more profitable, but still it would be nice to get these sets with more colors and creativity for the marvel and dc worlds I love. Heck this even applies to the new 400 dollar batcave, instead of something creative with lots of fun builds and a trophy room with a T. rex and giant penny, we’re getting a Keaton Batman batcave in a 300 dollar brick built black box. Oh well, at least lego’s original themes and new theme of dreamzzz will have the creativity I love. Oh also the two main sets for the new guardians of the galaxy movie serve as exceptions, as theyre really cool and use fun colors

I was building the Lego Friends Leo’s room set a few months back, and during it, I thought to myself that Friends is a way for Lego to counterbalance that sea of grey that is Star Wars. I also recently got a Lego yard sale haul that mostly comprised of Friends and Disney Princess sets, and it made me appreciate those themes much more, since they allow themselves to have tons of color. Because of that haul, I have way more pinks, blues, greens, and purples, especially, which I’m happy to have, especially since Dark Purple is my favorite color.

My favorite Star Wars set has to be the Jedi interceptors with the huge cockpits and opening wings. They translate so well into lego, and they always put a dash of color onto whatever lineup they follow. I think it might be one of the only yellow Star Wars sets they make. It’s just a shame they are long retired and rarely produced anymore.

Personally, I like the muted colours, the grey, white and tan, but I also recognize the value in patterns and schemes of colour. I don't think it matters that much if the colour is a primary colour, or something rare and exotic, it matters far more if I've got the parts in that colour to make it look good. And admittedly I do have a bit of a grudge against some of those uncommon colours, because I find myself with so few of them that I can't actually use them. In most of my builds, I try to either stick to realistic colours (eg. almost all grey for a military vehicle) or pick a colour scheme, often based on an old Lego theme. For example, recently while building a battle-mech, I settled on the colours from I think it was Space Police 2: Light grey base, with black undertones, red highlights, and trans-green core, plus some detailing in trans-red. I threw in a little metallic silver here and there, some dark grey when I didn't have the right parts in black or light grey... And I could not be happier with the result. I'm already planning to borrow the colours from the Aquanauts theme for the next one. But what I like is the idea of fusing old and new Lego together. Sometimes that means taking a classic colour scheme and using modern parts to make something, sometimes it means using classic parts and modern parts together in a contrasting blend But yeah, colour is what you make of it. Heck, I find uses for the old light and dark greys, and even sun-damaged pieces.

i got most of my early space stuff from a dream like pickup from facebook market place. the listing just said "lego space" with a price tag of 50$, and I immediate pounced on it. when I got there I realized just how incredible of a collection it was. legendary names like the cosmic fleet voyager, space police lock up base, blizzard barron, alpha command base one, the crown jewel of it all being the mythical futuron monorail. not only were there tons of rare and unique models, but you they where also very clearly heavily loved. of the 40 or so og space men 80% of them where beat up, and dirty with beautiful cracked chin straps and scuffed up faces. I spent the summer cleaning and repairing all of the different space sets, bringing them back to their former glory. a task that in some ways still continues to this day! I promised to myself that I would do something incredible with the opportunity I was given. Whether that be through my own creations, or through retrospective look backs like this. the whole experience really kickstarted my modern love of lego, and may stick with me until I grow old and weary.

@@TheDucksEye dude that is freaking awesome! I don't really know how to use Facebook marketplace but I do know how to go around antique stores and garage sales. 😂. So I'm hoping I get an awesome find like yours because that sounds like a dream come true! Space in general has been a pretty awesome theme from LEGO but I love that Classic Space stuff! Also can wait for some retrospectives! Keep the LEGO Content coming!!!! 👍

As the maker of an enormous condo skyscraper in white with accents of dark azure and dark pink, I took that personally.

I think I’ve come around on dark azure. It’s often misused in sets, but it’s a pretty cool color. Light azure on the other hand…

I (well actually it was my older brother) had the exact same idea about the chrome sword, except it was chrome gold instead of sliver, he thought chipping the chrome off the blade and leaving the hilt intact would make it look like the sword had an enchanted blade

I thought this was going to be a funny video on lego, not a life question on how color seems so devoid from life now Bravo.

0:31 I don't know if this was intentional, but saying "white pieces" and then showing the clonetroopers are white people was funny as hell to me

This is why I do collect both Lego Star Wars and Friends, the mix of more muted colors from the starships and the more out there vibrant houses and other things.

Gray scale are a easy to integrate with color. I bet most set use those a good number of color.

Culling and reinventing much of their colour palette in the 00s was the right call in my opinion, though it is sad thinking of what could have been for some of them. It was getting a bit out of hand. Nowadays colours are created by thinking ahead more and how they compliment each other.

I totally agree. The culling that occurred was just about necessary, but also I really like sand red.

Thankfully Lego knows that they still need a vibrant color pallet. Star Wars sets need to pay the bills but even city sets make good use of common colors.

Oh wow, this was a fantastic video essay! I was just expecting an overview of retired LEGO colors; I was not prepared for this... art! On the one hand, it's cool how many LEGO colors there are; on the other, I can't help but feel something has been lost from the simplicity of 80s and 90s era LEGO. And the overwhelming use of gray in licensed Star Wars sets is... frustrating, to say the least. I've nothing against Star Wars, but I want LEGO to be a framework to tell my _own_ stories - bright, vibrant stores, not someone else's story about big gray spaceships. Conversely, the colorful palette of Friends bothers me nearly as much for a very different reason: the sets, for the most part, look great, but the mini-doll figures ruin it for me. Oh, the figure are fine per se, but they don't match all the other LEGO themes, and the fact that the "girly theme" is segregated from the rest of LEGO like that is honestly really insulting. By saying "this theme is the theme for girls", and making it distinctly separate from the rest, I can't help but take from it the implication that all the other themes are _not_ for me, and that hurts. Worst part is, if it just used regular minifigs, Friends would probably be one of my favorite themes.

Hot take - lego should have stuck to the original 6 colours. White black red yellow blue and green only for foliage and baseplates I get why this is impractical but I like the style.

I understand why they do it logistically, but that doesn’t prevent the constant rehashes from being tiresome. They create new police cars every few years for new kids, but there are infinite different designs they can use for a police car. There are more or less only 1 or 2 designs an X-wing can be before purists cry fowl.
