    i read somewhere that these twin turbo engines were based of the normal road car m119 engines, and that after the race the engine made more power

  • @thethirdman225

    @thethirdman225

    2 жыл бұрын

    That is correct. The original Sauber C9 had an M117 SOHC V8 in it but that changed to the M119 in 1988. The new engine didn't make much more power than the original one but made it in a more useful way. Mercedes used the 5 litre engine with two small turbos because the overall package provided the best combination of power and fuel economy for Group C. Small turbos also spin up faster and suffer from less lag. Martin Brundle, who was driving for Jaguar at the time, was of the opinion that the Mercedes was a more optimal design for Group C than either the V12 or the turbo V6 he was using at the time. By the time Sauber won the 1989 Le Mans, they were known as Mercedes and all the engine work was being performed at the Mercedes development factory in Germany. I'm unsure whether the DOHC heads were actually in production for road cars at the time or whether this was subject to racing development but I assume they were standard road car heads. A common misconception is that the Merc was so powerful the other teams never stood a chance. In fact, this is quite wrong. Most teams produced about the same total power. The Group C regulations basically dictated a maximum fuel flow and each engine (other than the Mazda rotary) probably got about the same level of fuel efficiency. What the Mercedes had was an excellet spread of torque that enabled the drivers to be both fast and economical, especially when Schlesser and Baldi were driving.

    It was part of BE's master plan to lure manufacturers into F!, he figured the expense of the 3.5 formula would eventually force Sports Car back to a production base series and they would bring their engines over to the sport he was making his money off of. He was only mildly successful.

  • @thethirdman225

    @@shaadydog1 I don't think they were allowed more fuel. They were allowed to do things other race teams couldn't and I think the variable intake trumpets were one example and running at a much reduced weight was another. The 787B was basically an overgrown C2 car. In its original form, it consumed far too much fuel and far too much oil. Personally, while I welcome as much design variety as possible, I had to agree with the decision to ban it.

  • @shaadydog1

    @@thethirdman225 they were allowed more fuel from before that specific race or season. What’s funny is they were caought in the previous years of development of carrying too much fuel. The Rotary was complete fail and had more DNF than podiums.. If you consider it being “banned”, then everything that wasn’t an F1 based V10 was banned as well. Agree, Diversity does make racing interesting, lately everything endurance racing seems to be “Porche Cup…”

    Dude, a SB2C-powered Group C car with an X-pipe would sound incredible tearing down the Mulsanne. That engine with that exhaust setup is an absolute banshee in terms of exhaust note, and makes a hilarious amount of power.

    Yes M119-960 5ltr (quad cam) twin turbo. Same engine in the early R129 coupes from 1989-1991. For racing mods - custom intake manifold & twin plenum chambers. They were good for a lazy 1,000hp with a ton of torque, but boost was lowered to produce around 800-900hp so engines were not stressed at all. Revs were also limited to around 7,000rpm as torque came on so strong so no need to stress the engine chasing any higher revs as was not needed. Probably the best sounding engine of them all and that still stands today
