    I’m glad you understand that open-ended gameplay isn’t automatically better than linear gameplay. One thing I always hated about many mainstream reviewers is that they use the word “linear” as a criticism of the game, especially after open-ended juggernauts like Mario 64 and GTA III came into the scene. Linear gameplay is not bad, nor is open-ended. They are both perfectly valid styles of gameplay that each have their own advantages and disadvantages.

    Completely disagree, and I urge implantgames to consider this more deeply than "they both have pros and cons" What makes games unique is that they AREN'T linear, fundamentally. A 100% linear game is just a film. It follows, then, that MOST games should tend towards open-ended gameplay rather than away from it. Not all games, no, but there's a reason games like Mario 64 and GTA III were so impactful. The modern backlash against open-ended gameplay isn't unique, and it honestly just feels like a response to over-ambitious open worlds and procedurally generated indie games of the last 5~ years.

  • @lounowell4171

    Should clarify, Zelda for the NES isn't as clear as it could be and it wastes a lot of time, I largely agree with this review. It's just not an inherent problem with open world games like this comment suggests, it's a problem of lazy or over-ambitious design.

  • @implantgames

    Racing games are my favorite video game genre, and most of these are extremely linear, especially the checkpoint racers of the late 90's. Sega Rally is one of the most linear games on the planet, and also one of the best. I would maintain linear versus non-linear is not a one-size fits all and demands more nuance.

    I remember when I was a kid and I played this for the first time around 1990, it was unlike anything I had played before. It does have some rough edges though and is hard to go back to outside of nostalgia. I can completely understand people who never played it back then not being able to get into it or liking it. I would imagine a lot of younger players now would not like any of those 8-bit games, no matter which game or system.

    Great review, but (yes I have a but) there is one thing you missed. That games like this were designed with a social aspect as well. You are meant to discuss what you found with others on the schoolyard. The challenges aren't set up for a single gamer to find, but rather to learn from the experiences of others, to engage with your peers and be excited to learn of secrets they found and share your own. This aspect of gaming has been lost in the modern age of walk-throughs. This doesn't change the fact that it's true Zelda1 isn't quite as timeless as it may seem to some, but gives context to the original design philosophy. It wasn't a single person's experience, but a collective one.

  • @implantgames

    @implantgames

    5 жыл бұрын

    Thanks man! I would argue games are still designed with a social aspect in mind. With every new franchise I explore, there are massive communities sharing every last minute detail of every game. This is doubly-so with the speed-running community. Sharing new discoveries and secrets is not something unique to Zelda. Of course while researching this game I of course came across the Miyamoto quotes, but I'm just not convinced this is unique to Zelda or 80's games for that matter. And then of course, I can't help but think of Milon's Secret Castle...

    Fun fact for 21:50 . The reason The Legend of Zelda saves your progress and doesn't have a set number of lives is because the game was originally made for Nintendo's Famicom Disk System, where you could write your progress to the disk the game came on. It took Nintendo engineers a while to adapt the game to the NES cartrige. ( basically they added a small battery to the chipset so you coud save games)

  • @FranzoOnLine

    This video encouraged me to give Zelda 1 a third (maybe fourth?) chance a few months ago, and I was able to beat it. Exploring the overworld was not fun and I often had to grind rupees, but I ended up liking the dungeons, overcoming the rooms full of Darknuts felt good in the end. I overall liked the game, but I'm not excited to play through it again, and if anybody wants to play it in 2019 I would advise looking up the manual and map (maybe even a guide for some things, I didn't think looking for secrets in LoZ was fun at all) as the game by itself is really bad at teaching newcomers how to play properly imo.

  • @thatwasprettyneat
    @thatwasprettyneat5 жыл бұрын

    I loved this video even though I'm definitely one of the ones who somewhat romanticizes LOZ in the way you characterize it in the video. I think your analysis was pretty fair, without being unnecessarily critical of the game considering the era it came out. Your comment that the game was meant to be experienced WITH the manual was very insightful, especially considering your age (younger than someone who would've played the game when it came out). I remember playing this with my brother when it came out, and the manual was indeed, very much part of the game. Thanks for the great video.

    Your one of the only reviewers who try’s to really support there arguments about games and I really appreciate that. You do a good job at seeing game design and if it’s good or bad for the context of the game. Many reviews don’t list specific examples why the don’t like or do like a certain aspect of a game. You kinda set the standard for a more analytical game review. Keep up the great work!! But however I do agree that you did left out the community aspect of this game. It’s not something I would say changes what the game is but definitely good to have in perspective.

  • @VaultBoy13
    @VaultBoy135 жыл бұрын

    Games like Fez and The Witness have a lot in common with the original Legend of Zelda. They're games about exploration and solving puzzles. They're also games where the community worked together to solve things. And, I think that's what's missing in this retrospective. I don't think that aspect prevents a game from being a masterpiece.

    I loved this game as a kid! I spent HOURS figuring out all the secrets, back then there was no internet if you got stuck, and unless you were lucky enough to be able to afford a walk-through you just had to figure it out by grinding. Not sure I'd have the patience to do this now though. One thing I learned early on in the game was that all the enemies respawn in the overworld if you kill all the enemies, but if you leave one enemy, the rest won't respawn, I had the overworld set up with 1 of the weakest enemies on every screen, and when I needed to do something on that screen, I would just use the boomerang to keep that one enemy frozen in the corner, especially when you had to burn every tree and push every rock, it was much easier to walk off the screen and walk back with only one enemy to deal with...... Another thing I remember from back then was running to the books and magazine section every time my mom took me to the grocery store with a pen and paper to quickly write down any new codes and tips from the magazines that I couldn't afford. 😂

    The game actually makes for a great afternoon if you keep a guide at hand for when you get stuck, the first 5 dungeons are a whole lot of fun. Unfortunately, the late game is a little less enjoyable but I'd say it's still worth it to get to the end.

  • @implantgames

    In my opinion, the most friendly way to play Zelda 1 is to use the overworld map at nesmaps so you know where all the dungeon entrances, money, extra hearts, and shops are. The first 8 dungeons are well designed and I don't think any of them need a map. However, a guide or map is needed for Dungeon 9 which is... ridiculous. It makes for a streamlined experience I think most could at least get through, if not enjoy outright.

    Correction: It’s not that some enemies drop more bombs, it’s that there are only 4 groups of enemies that drop items and only 1 of those groups drop bombs, unless you kill a 10th consecutive enemy without getting hit using a bomb, then you get a 100% drop for a bomb. Likewise, if you kill 16 consecutive enemies without getting hit, you get a fairy. Furthermore, the only part that’s random is whether or not an enemy actually drops an item. Basically, the game tracks how many enemies you’ve killed after loading the game, and the item drop corresponds to that number.

    I played this game when it first came out. We all did. Yes it was hard, and you did need the help of your fellow class mates to solve certain puzzles. Word of mouth and exploration was key. I think we’re missing the point this was a $50 game back in 86 or 87. If you beat the game in one setting you’re not getting your moneys worth. I’m not even touching up on the fact that there’s a second quest. It’s a masterpiece, I don’t think it’s flawed I think that people want to try to beat the game in one setting. Eventually I will introduce the scheme to my child who is only three so in a few more years. I will be there when he plays but I’m not going to help him other than a few tips and tricks at the beginning. Hopefully he will enjoy as much as I did when I was a kid.

    I'm only 21 but I did grow up with this game thanks to the collection which came with my GameCube. Watching my parents who grew up with the game the first time around certainly helped give me an idea of where secrets and progression were. That, and spending hours just wandering around Hyrule. So I have a fondness for this game, but trying to play it knowing where things are is like trying to remember what it was like to see road signs before I knew how to read.

    I would love to see the next Zelda game be an adaptation of the first Zelda game with Breath of the Wild's scope and scale. You know the whole "Go get the 8 Mcguffins hidden away in secret dungeons somewhere in this massive world... good luck!" Only now there are better NPCs to hand out quests and hint at what you can do next. A plot that unfolds independently of the order in which you progress, and lots of cool thing to do on the side.

    Around 3:20 - that clue! That clue = 10th enemy has the bomb. That is exactly what all speedrunners are taking benefit from. It's all about this: Kill 9 enemies in a row and not take any hit/damage - then kill the 10th enemy with a bomb and that enemy will give a bomb drop! So it's a guaranteed bomb drop! If you kill for example 9 enemies in a row and take damage, the kill counter is reseted so you start from zero and has to kill 9 enemies in a row and kill the 10th with a bomb. Same thing if your kill counter is 1-8 and you take damage - the counter is now at 0. The bombs has same strength as the magic/master sword. So that's why speedrunners love the bombs when Link got the wooden sword. I think it's 5 heart containers to get the silver sword and 12 for the magic/master sword. Speedrunners skips the silver sword because they loose time to pick that up, and they know how to make sure they have enough of bombs. They know abouth this: 10th enemy Enemies that often drops bombs (those blue enemies in the overworld) Room bombs in levels/dungeons Zelda 1 is really a great game! If I'm right the game is around incredible small 55 kB or something like that! And that is for Quest 1+2, all graphics and audio and everything! 55 kB! I am so impressed by how they could fit so much into so little storage capacity (the cartridge at that time).

    18:00 Yes, but if you had been paying attention then you would notice there is an item never used that can be found in a variety of shops, the cheapest of which is only a few screens away from level 7 where the Blue Ring is located. While the booklet is not super helpful here, it does call this item "enemy bait" and it is obviously food. The part that bugged me when I was a kid was that I didn't know what "grumble, grumble.." meant. The Hungry Goriya could have said "I'm hungry," but the developers clearly wanted the gamer to think here. Even in the Japanese version this text is just the same Japanese gibberish that could possibly mean a tummy is grumbling.

    The very first time I played the original legend of Zelda was on the Super Smash Bros brawl masterpieces. the first Zelda game I played was a link to the past and I also played Link's Awakening the original game boy version after that. Of course since I played the original Zelda on the masterpiece section of Super Smash Bros brawl, it was a short one minute and 30 second demo I think so I didn't get to play much. I would later download the original Zelda onto my Wii through the virtual console. I found this game to be a lot harder than the Zelda games I was used to. I think the reason why I found this game to be so difficult, actually had to do with its limitations at the time. I was used to how in Link to the past the sword swipes across so you hit targets that are even diagonal from you while in the original Zelda the sword just pops up straight in front of you and therefore the only targets you can hit are straight in front of you. without diagonal movement it was an adjustment for me because I was so used to moving diagonally and being able to easily avoid every enemy I see or easily attack them. I'm not saying the game is bad because I still didn't actually experienced that much of it even after downloading it, it was just a big adjustment for me when I was so used to being able to more easily hit my enemies with the sword in A Link to the past or more easily avoid attacks by moving diagonally.

    I will admit this is a pretty good NES game and I can understand the love that players have for it. It's a very open ended game that is more like "Here is your overworld. Go and kick the butts of Ganon and his minions." There is no guide. The game expects the player to figure everything out on their own intuition. People that like to figure out these kinds of things on their own probably would love this game for how open ended it is and as such people that enjoy this game will probably find enjoyment in BoTW which I see as a re-iteration of this game done in the third dimension without hardware constraint. However players that like to have a sense of direction and know where to go naturally will not like this game as much and will probably stick to games like Link To The Past which provides direction but still gives the player some degree of freedom. As if my avatar isn't a giveaway I kind of like all the games in the series. They are all good in their own ways.

  • @Stephaniebeav

    Exactly, I loved both games for that very reason. Exploration and solving puzzles. It gave a sense of achievement. The game designers weren't holding your hand and telling you how to do everything. I love that style, because it feels like a real challenge, not spoon fed the answers. When the answers are not forced upon me, I can take the time to think about it and solve it myself. If I get stuck, then I could ask for help. Between old school peers and magazines or modern walkthroughs online. This is something I think most modern gaming has lost, providing the opportunity to figure it out on your own before pointing you in a specific direction.

  • @JonathanMartin884
    @JonathanMartin8845 жыл бұрын

    I appreciate that you gave the game an honest review. I would completely disagree with your assessment since I still hold this is one of the best Zelda games ever made, but I am at least open to the fact that even back in the day some people who liked the game did not want to grind their way through the whole thing. I, on the other hand, had no problem grinding my way through it. And I kept popping this cart into my Nintendo for about two years till I actually beat it (six months of which this game was actually in my Nintendo). I learned from friends and older brothers of friends where to go at some points and got frustrated at others and would go on to another game at others, only to be drawn back to it time and time again. Is it exactly what a modern gamer wants today where one can sit down and start playing and get through the whole thing, no. But it's a true quest, and even games like BOTW cannot compete with it in this fact; even with 1000 times more places to go in BOTW, this is one of the only games that feels like an adventure, feels like the gamer is actually the playable character trying to solve riddles, find the next important item, and ultimately continue on his or her journey. That's why, even though I say ALTTP is the best Zelda game and even though I say Zelda 2 is the hardest, this game mixed together the best quality and the hard quality most flawlessly out of all the games in the series. I would say it is a masterpiece for this very fact, and if a gamer wanted to they could replicate that same game experience that I had when I was a kid in the late 80s and early 90s with this game today, but they would have to set aside their modern gaming sensibilities to do so. While I don't think this takes anything away from the game, I can see why a modern gamer would think so. I think ALTTP and Link's Awakening offer a very similar experience to this game but maybe more geared to a modern gamer's ideas of what a Zelda game should be like, and along with this one I strongly recommend both of those titles. On the other hand, Zelda 2 is only for those who want not only a cryptic Zelda but a hard af Zelda as well; that title is only for the most serious Zelda players or gamers.

    I've always thought of guidebooks and handbooks as interesting articles/appendages for games, but not really a part of the game in and of itself. Like adding story elements or trivia, but not being pivotal to success like it is with Zelda. Definitely not as in dire need of it as Castlevania 2 would be for its entirety, but that it gives way to success quicker than the game provides the learning steps to the same result makes it feel like a crutch, and that it makes clear what the game does not (the "trees") makes it a little more frustrating.
